Samuel Reid was a native of Virginia but descended from Scotch parentage; followed the pursuits of agriculture, and reared a family of three sons and one daughter, viz." Alexander Reid, John W. Reid, Dr. James Reid, and Mary (Woods) Reid. He was a man of fair education for his day and time, and possessed of more than ordinary information; was a stanch Presbyterian, and died in that faith at an advanced age. His eldest son, Alexander, was married first to a Miss Blain, and after her death to Miss Mariah Thompson, leaving descendants as the result of each. John W. Reid was born in Virginia in 1784, was chiefly reared in Garrard County, Ky., and married Miss Jean Murrell, a native of Kentucky, and a daughter of Col. James Murrell, an Indian fighter, and an early member of the Kentucky Legislature from Lincoln County. She died in 1852, leaving seven children: Dr. James M. (deceased), Amanda M. (McMurtry), Eliza J. (Lee), Sallie T. (wife of Dr. F. S. Read), John M., Samuel, and William Reid. John M. Reid, the fifth of this family, was born in Lincoln County, in the year 1823. He received the advantages of the common schools, and has given his attention to farming, in which he has been quite successful, being one of the most extensive land owners in Lincoln County. In 1854 he married Miss Bettie A. Hays, daughter of Hugh Hays and Elizabeth (Blain) Hays. To them were born five children: Dr. Hugh Reid, a prominent young physician of Stanford, Ky., Fannie M. (Jones), James C., Mary (Foster), and Bessie Reid. Bettie A. (Hays) Reid was the seventh of a family of eleven children born to Hugh and Elizabeth Hays. She died in the year 1881, at the age of fifty-one. Dr. Hugh Reid, the eldest son, was born in Lincoln County in 1856, was reared on his father's farm, educated at Centre College, Danville, Ky., graduating in the class of 1878-79. He then performed the usual preparatory reading with Dr. L. S. McMurtry, of Danville, and in 1880 entered the medical department of the University of Virginia, taking one course; then entered the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, and received the degree conferred by that institution in 1882. Since that date he has been in the practice of his profession at Stanford, Ky. He was married in 1886 to Miss Sabra Pennington.
