Sands April 20, 1934 Bullitt County KyArchives Obituaries Tipton Daily Tribune (Tipton, Indiana) 21 April 1934 (Saturday) Tipton Daily Tribune (Tipton, Indiana) 21 April 1934 (Saturday) DEATH CAUSED BY PARALYSIS Dennis S. Sands, 85 Died at Home in Sharpsville Friday Afternoon FUNERAL IS SUNDAY Dennis S. Sands, 85 years of age and one of the well respected and loved residents of Sharpsville, died at his home in that town Friday afternoon at 2:45, death being caused by paralysis. Mr. Sands suffered a stroke one week ago Thursday and since that time his condition had been extremely critical. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in Sharpsville Sunday afternoon at 1:30 with Rev. C. W. Montgomery officiating and burial will be in the Sharpsville cemetery beside the wife whose death occurred in November, 1931. Dennis S. Sands was born in Bullitt county, Kentucky, January 17, 1849, his parents being James and Rachel (Cunningham) Sands. His grandfather Sands who was a Virginian was killed in a skirmish with the Indians in the war of 1812. When 12 years of age, his parents moved to Louisville and the lad was employed by the U.S. government as a wagon driver until the close of the war, being too young to enlist as a soldier, although he endeavored to get into the ranks. March 5th, 1874 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret McCollough, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McCollough of Scott county, Indiana, the marriage taking place at the home of the bride's parents. The young people went to housekeepin in Lousiville, Ky., where they resided on the farm, three children were born to the couple, all dying in infancy, leaving the home childless. Further sadness entered the home by the death of an orphan boy they took at the age of five who died of pneumonia when 13. The boy was James Sands, a nephew of Dennis S. Sands. In 1884 the couple moved to Page county, Iowa, purchasing a 120 acre farm near Blanchard but in 1896 Mr. Sands health failed and he and his wife made a long overland trip in a covered wagon through the western country, finally returning and locating near Elno, Missouri in 1899. In 1902 they left Missouri coming to Tipton county and buying a farm north of Sharpsville and for 32 years the deceased was one of the highly respected residents of Liberty township. Several years ago he and his wife retired from the farm and removed to Sharpsville living a retired life on the income from his Scott county and Tipton county farms. For years he was considered one of the grand old pioneers of the Sharpsville community, a devout Christian and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church having been converted at a meeting at Blanchard in 1888.
