Nick Ray Shoots and Kills Lawyer Albert Scott. "Our citizens were horrified on last Saturday afternoon when a telephone message came from Edmonton announcing that at one o'clock Nick Ray had shot and killed Lawyer A. W. Scott, of this place, on the streets of Edmonton. "The following is the best account of the affair obtainable up to the present time: "It seems that the parties to the affair have been at enmity for many years and an affray between them was barely averted about a year ago by the intervention of friends. The original difficulty arose over a division line between the adjoining lands in the town of Edmonton. Since that time a lawsuit between them has been decided in favor of Scott, and he was in Edmonton arranging for the dollection of the amount due him and costs of the suit. It appears that Mr. Scott, in company with Messrs. R.D. Shannon and Jim Kinnaird, was walking down the alley near the disputed line when Nick Ray came from behind a barn near by and remarked, "Here comes the d----d son of a b---- now," and leveled his pistol. Scott spoke and said to him, "Ray, I don't want any trouble with you, I am unarmed." Before he finished speaking Ray fired, striking him in the region of the stomach. Scott then closed in and clinched Ray, throwing him to the ground. By this time his wound had robbed him of his strength and he rolled off. Ray then fired two more shots and, picking up Scott's hat, started off. On looking at the hat he saw his mistake and throwing it to Scott said, "Take your hat to go to h---l". After walking a few steps he turned and said, "Perhaps I haven't done a good job," and then shot Scott in the mouth as he lay on the ground. After this he left and has not been seen since. A reward of $200 was immediately offered for his capture. "The sad affair has cast a gloom over the entire community, as Albert Scott was a man much liked for his sterling integrity of character and manly bearing. As a lawyer he stood high in the bar here and in adjoining counties where he practiced. "The excitement at Edmonton, where both men were raised, is at fever heat, and it is feared that lynch law may be invoked if Ray is caught very soon. "Mr. Albert W. Scott has been a citizen of our town and member of the bar for a good many years, and although he was not a man to attract friends on short notice, he was the kind of man that imporves on acquaintenance. He was as brave a man as ever lived, but always avoided trouble. He was never known to carry a pistol, though he had good reason to believe that Ray was always armed and seeking a difficulty with him. "Mr. Scott was married several years ago to Miss Lucy Mansfield, of Hart county, who died a year or two after, leaving an infant only a few months old. The child only lived a few weeks after the death of its mother. "The remains of Mr. Scott were interred on the farm of his father, near Edmonton, last Sunday afternoon. "Ray is still at large, and, it is thought, is hiding on the farm of his father near Edmonton. A report was received here yesterday to the effect that Ray had sent word to the Sheriff that he would surrender to him as soon as the excitement subsided and he could guarantee him protection."
