"Mr. Wade Shirley, who left the Summer Shade country for Nebraska with his mother when quite a small boy, and who has since resided near Salem in that State, met a tragic death on the 9th inst. Young Shirley, in company with a friend and companion by the name of Sam McCool, were out skating on the river when the ice suddenly gave way and they both went under and were drowned. Wade Shirley was a son of Mrs. Laura E. Shirley, one of the ____ esteemed ladies that ever lived in this seciton, and the news of the heart-rendering death of her son will be heard with genuine sorrow by all who knew her here. Her unfortunate son was eighteen years of age at the time of his death, and was a highly esteemed and promising young man. He recently concluded a successful district school, and only a month ago, had entered school in Salem for the winter, and was staying with the family of his uncle, Mr. R. E. Grinstead. "The sad ending of this bright young man calls to mind the fact that his father, grand father and great grand father all met with sudden and tragic deaths."
