SHEARN shot JACKSON in the breast, firing one time with a pistol. SHEARN says that JACKSON refused to comply with a crop contract between them, claiming that part of it was a forgery. This started the trouble, SHEARN claims, and JACKSON advanced on him with a drawn knife, when he shot him in self-defense. JACKSON'S side of the story has not been made public. Immediately after the shooting, SHEARN went to Hawesville, and gave himself up. He was released on bond, but some believe he may have trouble and expense to prove self-defense, as there are always two sides to a case like this. SHEARN, however, has always has borne an excellent reputation, while JACKSON is said to be a dangerous man. SHEARN shot JACKSON just below the heart, it is reported. Saturday, JACKSON wanted to make his dying statement to a magistrate, but the magistrate wouldn't come, as he believed the wound wasn't dangerous enough. JACKSON is a native of the back part of Hancock County, where, it is said, men don't often die with their boots on.
