Sam was born in Hardinsburg,KY on 9-23-1921 to the late Samuel Foster Smiley, Sr and Pauline Kessinger Smiley. He was a farmer and former employee of the Corps of Engineers at Rough River Dam State Park and a member, deacon and music director of Black Lick Baptist Church, a Kentucky Colonel and World War II Army veteran. At the time the county schools were consolidated, Sam was a member of the Board of Education. He was also a member of the board of directors for Southern States. Sam was a talented musician, playing the harmonica and guitar and he was a songwriter having composed a song called "Family Reunion" which spoke of his love of family get togethers. In his free time, he loved all sports and bird watching. He was preceded in death by his wife - Ruth Franklin Rebarker Smiley. 2 brothers and 6 sisters: Leonard and Calvin Smiley, Margaret Owen, Lydia Robertson, Lula Henderson, Hannah Smiley, Lilly Mary Thornsberry, Mattie Lee Beatty Sam is survived by 3 children: Sue Morris of Owensboro,KY David Foster Smiley, Sr. of Falls of Rough,KY Brenda Bruington of Hardinsburg,KY 1 sister - Nell Moorman of Falls of Rough,KY 6 grandchildren: Kevin Andrew Morris David Foster Smiley,Jr and Courtney Deanna Smiley Jason Keith, Kirby Lynn and Kelly-Jade Bruington 1 great granddaugher: Taylor Ashtyn Morris many nieces and nephews Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 2,2008 at 11AM at Black Lick Baptist Church with Rev. Oliver Sanders officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home on Thursday from 4-8PM and after 8:30AM Friday.
