Steger, 74, of 414 Ellsworth St., Sharon, Penn., were held at 2 p.m., Nov. 16, [1965] in the L. Trevor Sample Funeral Home, Sharon. He died Saturday in his home. He was born at Campbellsville, Ky., on March 8, 1891. He was the son of John D. and Birdell Prescott Steger. Mr. Steger lived in Taylor County until he attained young manhood. He went to Sharon in 1916, first being employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a detective. He joined the Sharon Police Department in 1917, later on becoming Chief of Police where he served for 20 years. He retired from this in 1942 to become a plant guard at the local Westinghouse plant where he worked for 14 years, retiring in 1956. He served in the Army during World War I, and was a charter member of the Sharon American Legion Post 299. He was a life member of the Sharon B.P.O. Elks Lodge 103. He was quite active in politics having served as Republican Committeeman of Mercer County, and held other offices of responsibility in the Party. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Gladys Hord Steger, whom he married May 25, 1917, a daughter Evelyn, wife of George William Freund. Another daughter, Ellen Bird, died in 1924. Mrs. Steger is a sister of Mrs. R. S. Bailey, Mrs. Aubrey Peterson, and Mrs. David Mitchell, all of Campbellsville, and Mrs. Muriel Lippincott of Burkesville. Other relatives of both live live in Taylor County also.
