Tanner, 81, of Wellsboro, Pa., formerly of Boyle County, died Thursday at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Wellsboro. Born Sept. 7, 1920, in Blossburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Weland and Elsie Mase Tanner. He was a supervisor for Corning Inc., in Wellsboro, Pa. He retired in 1979 after 38 years of service, which included several years at the Corning plant in Harrodsburg. He was a charter member of the Moose Lodge #1147, member of VFW Post #4907, American Legion #84 and the Wellsboro Veterans Club. He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Force veteran who served in many overseas battles and campaigns. He was awarded four service bars with seven bronze stars. Survivors include two sons, Frank W. Tanner of Knoxville, Tenn. and Donald G. Tanner of Irwin, Pa.; a daughter, Nancy J. Bowen of Lykens, Pa.; a sister, Pauline Sharp of Mansfield, Pa.; a special friend, Margaret Keagle of Wellsboro, Pa.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie Watkins Tanner. A Moose service will be held 6 p.m. today followed by a memorial service by Rev. Eugene Charsky at Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home in Wellsboro. Burial will be in Wellsboro Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may go to the American Diabetes Association.
