Prior to 9 August 1813 he married Elizabeth Wilson in North Carolina. While he is on the 1815 tax rolls for Franklin County, North Carolina (without land), he appears on records for Nash County, North Carolina as early as 1804, and he was a resident of Nash County immediately before coming to Kentucky. On 17 February 1818 Brittain [sic] Taylor sold 100 acres on Turkey Creek, in Nash County. Nash County Deed Book 10, p.157. After the sale he and Elizabeth came to Kentucky, along with his relative (probably a cousin), Joseph Taylor, and Joseph’s wife, Nancy Wilson Taylor, Elizabeth’s sister. The earliest his name appears on a Kentucky tax list is 1819. Broyles, Whitley County, Kentucky Tax List Summary, 1819-1850. He does not appear on a tax roll owning land until 1824, when he is taxed on 200 acres on Jellico Creek. By the time of his death he owned land on the Cumberland River and Jellico Creek. He lived a relatively obscure life. Whitley County records show him serving as a Whitley County Grand Juror on 17 October 1825, returning an indictment against William Gatliff. Whitley Circuit Court Order Book A-B-C, p.252. On the second day of the June Term, 1830, he served as a Petit Juror, supra, p.467, and during the September Term as a Grand Juror, returning an indictment against one David Middleton for maintaining a tippling house in Williamsburg and against Andrew Pennington for profane swearing, supra, p.475. He died in Whitley County (possibly in the region of Whitley and Pulaski counties that later became part of McCreary County) between 23 January 1847 and 20 September 1847. His Will is recorded in Whitley County Will Book 1, p.109. It is dated 23 January 1847 and was probated on 20 September 1847. The locations of the graves of Britton and Elizabeth are not known, but it is likely they are buried somewhere in the present McCreary County. As Britton's Will relates, his children were at least Richmond (1817- 1899), Mary/Polly (b. 1819), Hilliard (1825-1872) and Emily (1834-1899). There is a possibility that he had another son, Dempsey (1815-1893), but since Dempsey named his eldest son “Reuben,” that is not likely. There is a possibility that Redmond Taylor (b. ca 1822) is also a son, but he is more likely the son of Joseph, as he named his eldest son “Joseph.” Submitted by: Arnold Taylor ataylor@ortlaw.com This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/kyfiles/
