Levin JOHN BUCKNER THRUSTON, United States senator and judge, was born in 1757, in Virginia, where he acquired a liberal education and prepared himself to enter the legal profession. He emigrated to the Kentucky district and located at Louisville at an early day. He represented his district in the legislature of Virginia in 1789; in 1791 was appointed one of the judges of the Kentucky district courts; in 1798-99 was secretary of the Kentucky senate, a member of the constitutional convention in 1799, and in 1805 he was tendered the appointment of judge of the United States court for the territory of Orleans, which he declined, having been elected to a seat in the United States senate. He resigned from the senate to accept the office of judge of the United States court for the District of Columbia, and retained that incumbency until his death, which occurred in Washington, August 30, 1845. He was a man of many graces of character, natural and acquired, of superior ability and great erudition. He filled the several positions to which he was elected or appointed very acceptably, and reflected honor upon the state and county. His long service upon the bench was alike honorable to himself and Kentucky.
