DIED IN SERVICE -- CHARLEY WHEATLEY, A HANCOCK BOY, IS CARRIED AWAY BY TYPHOID FEVER IN PONCE, PORTO RICO Mrs. Mary HALE, of this city (Cloverport), received a letter on Thursday from the officials in charge, stating that Charles WHEATLEY died in Ponce, Porto Rico on August 12 (1899) of typhoid fever. WHEATLEY was a Hancock County boy, and was raised near Midway in the upper part of the county. He was well known both in Hawesville and Cannelton (Perry County, Indiana), having lived in each place. He enlisted in the regular Army in March, and it will be remembered he wrote "The Clarion" Newspaper a letter from the Columbus Barracks, Ohio, on April 9th. He left that place on the following Monday for Porto Rico, and joined the 5th Infantry. He was a young man probably 38 years old, and was well liked.
