DEATH: Witty & Wilkerson, 1874, Metcalfe Co. "Last week our Summer Shade correspondent gave the particulars of the accidental killing of Mr. Chris Witty by the careless handling of fire-arms, and we learned of another accident of somewhat similar nature, which occured, last Saturday evening. John Wilkinson, a negro living a few miles south of town, was out hunting and called at the house of Wash Trigg (col.). As he entered the yard, some dogs attacked him, and he struck one of them with the breech of the gun, when it was discharged. The ball entered his right breast just below the nipple and ranged upwards, killing him instantly. An inquest washeld Sunday morning by Esquire Scott, and the Jury returned a verdict in accordance with the above facts." Glasgow (KY) Weekly Times, 23 July 1874. ______________________________
