From: KyArchives Sent: Friday, August 25, 2017 11:46 PM To: Ky-Footsteps Subject: Wise.Corporal.Eugene.1899.Hancock.OBIT Corporal Eugene WISE November 1899 Hancock County KyArchives Obituaries Breckinridge News, Cloverport, Ky., Wednesday, November 8, 1899 Page 2, HANCOCK COUNTY BOY DROWNED A recent report from General Otis, in the Philipines, records the accidental drowning of Corporal Eugene WISE of Company M, 16th Infantry, says the "Hancock Clarion". Young WISE formerly lived at Ensor with the family of Mr. T. B. JONES, who reared him from a child. He enlisted in the outbreak of the Spanish War of Captain Tyler's recruiting office, and was in the fighting about Santiago. At the close of the war, he got his discharge, and in February last he re- enlisted at St. Louis for the Philipines campaign. He was on the firing line with the 16th, and won his promotion to Corporal. No details of his death are known, further than he was accidently drowned, as shown in the official report. He was well known and liked about Waitman, and the lower part of this county.
