He was born in 1761 in Halifax County, Virginia, He enlisted in April, 1780, in North Carolina Troops in Guilford County, North Carolina, under Captain Beshears and Colonel Porterfield and in 1781 he enlisted under Captain Miner Smith and Colonel James Martin. He was in the battles of Hanging Rock, Camden, Drowning Creek, White Swamp, and Brick House. Note: He died December 15, 1840 in Whitley County, Kentucky. His children were Samuel and William Witt.
