He grew up in Boone County, Kentucky. James served in the Civil War. He married Henrietta Dianah Glacken (1848-1876) April 18, 1865, in Boone County, Kentucky. Their two oldest children, Elbert Lee and Andrew Christopher, were born in Kenton County, Kentucky in 1865 and 1867. Their daughter Minnie was born in Milam, Macon County, Illinois in 1869, and they were listed on the 1870 census. Minnie died before 1880. The family was back in Kenton County, Kentucky in 1880. Henrietta died in 1876. The youngest child, William, was raised by Henrietta's sister, Amanda Glacken Carpenter, and her husband John. In 1881 James and his two oldest sons, Elbert and Andrew, moved to Milam County, Texas. James moved to Krum, Denton County, Texas in 1889. His son Elbert stayed in Milam County, and Andrew moved to Hamilton County. James married a second time, to Eliza Copeland. They had two children, Kate and Clifford. When he was 53, James married Emma Rhine Mounts, widow of Joseph Harrison Mounts. They were married in Denton County, Texas, on November 22, 1896. James was a member of the Baptist Church in Krum. He fell in September or early October 1927 and broke his hip. He died October 9, 1927, and is buried in Jackson Cemetery, Krum, Denton County, Texas.
