Seeking maiden-name of Ruth, first wife of Henry WISER.  Henry and his family came to Laurel Co. KY from Claiborne Co. TN prior to 1850.  The known children of Henry and Ruth WISER were:

John G. WISER, b. ca. 1824 TN; Lewis Christopher WISER, b. ca. 1826 Claiborne Co. TN; James WISER, b. ca. 1828 Claiborne Co. TN d. 19 Feb. 1893 Pulaski Co. KY; William G. WISER, b. ca. 1832 TN; and Elizabeth Jane WISER, b. 6 March 1836 Claiborne Co. TN d. 11 Nov. 1918 Laurel Co. KY.  Elizabeth married Esom FARRIS/FARIS in Laurel Co.  Since she died after 1911 she should have a
death certificate which would list her mother's maiden name if it was known to the informant, but I have been unable to locate a death certificate for her.  Any help with this family would be appreciated.

CONANT/CANANT

Searching for descendants of Chesley CONANT/CANANT b ca 1790 - was in Laurens Co, SC 1820.  He was in Williamsburg KY (I do not know what county Williamsburg was in at that time) in 1830's. He was in Laurel Co, KY in 1850.  His second wife, Elizabeth COX, was from KY and they were married 1833. Their son, Milton Allen CONANT was born 1833 in Williamsburg KY and his wife Amanda Jane McBEATH was born 1825 in Somerset, KY.  She was the daughter of Haven McBEATH and Mary WITHERS.  Their grandchildren were in CONANT, KY. My husband is descended from Chesley CONANT/CANANT and his third wife, named Elizabeth ______.  They went to Mississippi and their son William CANANT was born in MS and died in Cullman Co, AL.  The CANANT family is quite large in Cullman Co, and my father in law was from there.   If anyone knows of these families or can offer any suggestions I will be very happy to hear from you. We want to know more about Chesley and his ancestors, and hope to find somemore clues.

ORTON/ORTEN

I am looking for any information on a John V. ORTON or ORTEN, who was born in North Carolina in ????, and later migrated to Tennessee/Kentucky, and married an Mary Ann Thomas. No other information was known or passed on from the family on John V. ORTON. I have since found a John V. ORTON in the 1840 census in Carter County, Tennessee, with two males in the household ( 1 20-29, and 1 40-49 ) and four females in the household ( 1 0-5, 1 5-9, 1 10-15, 1 40-49 ). Not much
information has been acquired from that point, until 1867 when in the Laurel County, Kentucky marriage book, it is recorded that Mary A. Thomas married John V. ORTEN on July 14, 1867. In the 1870 census for Laurel County, Kentucky  in the London Voting Precinct, it shows a John L. ORTON from North Carolina, age 75 living in the household of John Cloyd. Also in that census it shows that in the Raccon Voting Precinct/Mershons Cross Roads, a Mary Orton, age 42 with two children
Harriett, age 9 and James, age 3. John ORTON and Mary ORTON had a son named Jesse Green ORTON, supposedly born in Owsley County on March 8, 1871, and later married an Malinda Catherine Overbay in 1893 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. Jesse died on November 22, 1945 in
Rockcastle County, Kentucky. Any information on John V. ORTON/ORTEN would be appreciated. Thank you.

GRAY, GREGORY, FRASIER, LUNSFORD

Looking for families of GRAY, GREGORY, FRASIER, LUNSFORD in and around Laurel County.   My grandfather ELI GRAY was born in CLAY county in 1872, but lived in and around London after a period of time.  His father was JASPER NEWTON GRAY (family name) and mother was HELEN HARRIS.  They married in TN in 1859. He had a sister CLARA who married WM GREGORY. Brothers WILLIAM, MALIN DUNCAN and JASPER.  Sister  FLORENCE.  My grandfather left KY around the mid-1880's due to a problem that family whispers attributed to a feud where a sheriff was killed.  The whispered feud was supposed to be between the PHILPOTTS and the GRAYS but can find no record of it, although ELI is listed on an 1880 census as living with an aunt and uncle, which would explain the rumor that his father died (or was killed) and his mother did not care for the children.  Any help in locating family with the above links, please contact me.  Thank you.

I would love to contact anyone who has any information on the Gabbard family.  My great-great-great grandfather Edward W. GABBARD was born in Laurel County in February of 1843.  He married Mary Ann ______?.  I'm am particularly interested in her last name.  It could be EVAN, EVANS, IRWIN, or ARWEN.  I have no idea when or where they were married, but I am assuming Laurel Co.. for now.  They both buried in northwest Arkansas.  If anyone might have a clue, I would love to hear from you.  Or if you have GABBARD/GABBERT connections I would love to hear from you too.

Nancy Ann HERRON was born 21 un 1886 in London,Laurel CO,Ky. to James T. HERRON and Lydia F. WHITT, Nancy married  ca. 1903 in Laurel Co, Ky to  Elmer
JONES, he was born 1879 in London,Laurel CO,Ky. to Isaac JONES and  Caroline
ROACH. Nancy had a brother Wayman and a sister Pearl. Pearl too married a JONES.
They had six children and came to Ore in about 1919 and both Nancy and Elmer are buried  in Mictchell, Wheeler Co, Ore.

Am looking for any information about my grandfather, Ernst Hofer, who came from Switzerland about 1885 and was residing in Pittsburg, KY in 1905 when he married Elise Marie (or Marie Elise - "Lizzie") Kuntz, daughter of Fred Kuntz who was killed by a train in East Bernstadt on December 9, 1898.  Also, Jacob Hofer, who settled in East Bernstadt (my great-great-great uncle) and his wife and descendants.

Rachel LYNCH, daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah (HUNTER) LYNCH, born in the Rough Creek area of Laurel County about 1892, married in Laurel County about 1812. Who did she marry and what is the date. I think the info is in the marriage books as the London Public Library. I have her Hunter ancestry back to Switzerland in the mid 1600. I will gladly share. Her grandfather, Sterling W. LYNCH, is also a descendant of John and Barbara (BOWMAN) Hunter who settled in Washington County Tennessee in 1783.

I am looking for any information on my GG grandparents. William Harve Steele, went by Harve, He was sheriff in laurel county for  4 different terms during the 40's and early 50's. He died Oct. 6 1956 while still sheriff, he was 84 yrs. old at the time. His wife Mary
Steele was appointed sheriff  to finish out the two yrs. left in the term, this would have been 1956. She was a Green from Henderson Kentucky. They had one child, Edward Green Steele, died in 1947.

Also- any information on my GGG grandparents would also be helpful.  Samuel Green Steele and Elizabeth Steele they were from Laurel County. He died in 1923 in Laurel. She died in 1929 also in Laurel County. I  know they owned land there before and after the Civil War.

Adin Sasser's daughter, Rebecca married Abraham Williams and 20 January 1867 their only child, Thomas S. 'Tom' Williams was born in Laurel County, Kentucky. Rebecca died 6 or 8 months later from Consumption making her date of death the fall of 1867.

Who did Patsy marry? Could Patsy have been a female and nickname for Martha? What became of Patsy? Also, what happened to Ezekiel's 1st wife, Lucinda MCFARLAND ANDERSON? I am attempting to gather information on my great, great grandparents, Martin and Sallie Ann (Sarah) Brown Asher, and other members of my direct line from Laurel County. They were married by Hiram Johnson on November 8, 1860. I noticed in the recent excerpt of the Mountain Echo that Hiram Johnson was an Elder in the United Baptist Church. Does anyone know if records are available from this church?

Also if anyone else if researching the Martin Asher or Sallie Ann Brown lines, I would like to hear from them and possibly exchange some info.

Looking for information on Mary Susan FIELDS, my g-grandmother. On 22 July 1891, she married James Finley SHEPHERD, in Jackson Co., at the home of James Brownlow BINGHAM. His name is also on the marriage license. According to LDS records, Mary Susan FIELDS was living with J. B. & Mary (TINCHER) BINGHAM in the late 1880's. Mary and Finley SHEPHERD had one son, that I know of, Charles Blaine SHEPHERD, b. 4 July 1894. By 1899-1900 James Finley SHEPHERD is living in Laurel Co. with another woman and has a child. I have not found a divorce rec. or death cert. Please contact me if you have any information about Mary Susan FIELDS. Looking for gr grandfather Lafayette Thomas maybe born in Owsley County. I have one reference also that he was born in Breathitt County so I am searching both. He died, I believe, at age 38. He was married to Elizabeth Isaac who may have been born in Owsley County. I also have a reference that has her birth in Jackson County. She died at age 62. I don't know their dates of birth or death yet.

I am looking for a small town that may not exist anymore, named Zedic. My father, Herbert Jefferson Combs was born there in 1901. His father was Robert L. Combs, mother Sarah Duncil. They were originally from Laurel Co. and migrated to Jellico Tenn. around the time of my father's birth, so I believe that Zedic had to be on the route south from Laurel Co.to Jellico. Ky. Place Names does not list it, and the U. of Ky. could not find it either, I am hoping that someone out there may have heard of it or knows someone who has. Will try to look in Whitley Co.first. Welcome MULLINS - Does anyone know who the parents were of Welcome MULLINS born 1803 in Rockcastle, KY. - Married Lucinda MOORE 14 Oct 1832 in Laurel, KY and died in Nov 1, 1879 in Madison, KY. He last appeared in the 1870 Madison, KY Census and then died 9 years later at the age of 76. Tax lists and Census records in these three counties seem to point to either Terry MULLINS b.1770 in NC or Spencer MULLINS b. 1775 in NC as a possible father. Terry MULLINS and Spencer MULLINS were the sons of Henry MULLINS and Mary TERRY. Thankful for any leads

Over the past several years, I have accumulated bits and pieces of information on the DeZarn family. Thus far, all of my information leads back to KY. My father, Donald DeZarn, Sr., who died in June 1982, once told me that he thought there was a link back though history to French Quebec. I have not been able to confirm or deny that claim. My grandfather (Donald Sr. father), Green DeZarn, hailed from KY and his wife, my grandmother, Daisy Farmer Dezarn, came from Hamilton, OH. I though I would try this newly discovered site to see if I can gain some new insight on the DeZarn family.

I am new to this site, but was born in Corbin, Kentucky and have some surnames that are of interest to me. I am a BIBLE and subscribe to the Bible Family Newsletter and list. As BIBLES go in Knox County, I am interested in THOMAS LaFAYETTE BIBLE and CARL BALCH BIBLE, SR. who supposedly came to Corbin in 1922 and owned the Bible Feed store. Carl attended Corbin High school his last two years. I understand they are buried in Pine Hill (which is actually Park Hill?) Cemetary. Other surnames from Knox County include WESTERFIELD, in particular EDNA WESTERFIELD (d. 9/13/1992), GEORGE EDGAR WESTERFIELD (d. 2/14/1963), but were in Whitley County. Also looking for TANDY M. WESTERFIELD (d. 9/21/1957 in Knox) and his father CLAIBORNE (sp?) WESTERFIELD about whom I know very little. TANDY'S brothers were STEVEN REED, TILFORD and sisters TILDY ANNA, LINDY JANE, LIDA ALICE, MARY, and NORA. EDGAR'S brothers were MONROE, WHITNEY PEARLE, and NEIL and sisters RACHAL, LILLIAN, BESSIE, JERRELL, MAGGIE, and, ORA MAE. Also any information on QUINCY MOORE who married EVA JANE TAYLOR-ANDERSON on November 12, 1919.

I am searching for information concerning Nancy Daniel born 1845 in Kentucky, married in 1864 to John L. Daniel of Claiborne County, Tennessee, died 07/1878 and buried at Villa Ridge, Illinois. Need the name of her mother. We were told her name was Nancy Daniel and she married a cousin, John L. Daniel. Nancy ? was the second of four wives of John L. Daniel. James I. WEAVER (b 28Jan1818 - d 15Sep1888), his wife Rhoda S. WEAVER (JONES) came to Texas from Laurel County, KY sometime around the mid- 1860's. His father, David D. WEAVER (b 29Apr1791 - d 18Jan1854) and his father Samuel WEAVER (b 26Nov1755 - d 14 Nov1842) are both believed to be buried in Laurel County. Possibly Bush Cemetary. Would appreciate info on any of these folks and/or their kin.

Hi, I'm trying to locate information on my great grandfather. His name is James Howell and he was a member of the Kentucky Volunteers - Army of the Potomac (Manasses). He died in 1915 around the age of 87. His wife's first name may have been Julia. He had a daughter named Rebecca that was born in Knox County, Kentucky on April 1, 1867. She married William Miller on September 1, 1881 in Pineville, Kentucky.
