From: "Mike Clark" Date: Saturday, July 03, 2010 6:15 PM I have been working since 1977 on trying to determine the father of my earliest known Davis ancestor. My ancestor Phanuel Davis listed himself as 64 years old and born in VA in the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Census for Jennings County, IN. An oral tradition has either Phanuel or his father as being from Wythe County, VA Just recently I learned that Phanuel had Cockrell Y chromosome DNA. Phanuel's wife was Jane Woods. Jane was born in Madison County, Kentucky in 1793, the daughter of William Woods and Ruth Kincaid. Ruth Kincaid was born in Washington County, VA in 1772; the daughter of Captain John Kinciad and Margaret Lockhart?. This Captain John Kincaid had another daughter Mary who married a William Barksdale/Braxdale; one of Harrod's Station's early settlers. This William Barksdale was killed by Indians in 1778, and a few years later his estate was being administrated by a Joseph Davis in 1784. I believe this was an administrative matter for Lincoln County, KY. Since Phanuel Davis named his oldest son Joseph, and since Phanuel married into this Kincaid family, I started digging around on Joseph Davis in KY. I found Joseph Davis marrying Elizabeth Gordon in Lincoln County, KY in late 1783, just a little over a year before Phanuel's birth in 1785/1786. I then found deeds in Madison County, KY with regard to the estate of Samuel Davis, husband of Jane. It starts to refer to Samuel's heirs in 1799 Madison County, KY records; implying Samuel had died. A son Joseph is mentioned in these deeds. Samuel is noted as living in Madison County, Kentucky. I now see that the Lincoln County records has a will for Samuel Davis in Book B on page 211, dated May 11, 1798. Can someone please copy that record for me, to see if it contains any additional information about Samuel and Jane and their children or grandchildren? I will be glad to pay for someone's time and for the copying charges. This could be a great connection for my family. Thank you in advance for your time. Yours truly, Mike Mikeandmaeclark@aol.com
