Subject: Re: Benjamin Sampson - Margaret Warren marriage documents Date: Tuesday, February 26, 2013 4:52 PM Sent:* Monday, February 18, 2013 8:06 AM Subject:* Benjamin Sampson - Margaret Warren marriage documents Here are things to note: Dates:* 1. Dec. 8, 1793 - date of James Warren's consent note 2. Dec. 9, 1793 - date of marriage bond 3. Date on John Smith, Justice of the Peace's marriage license for marriage of Benjamin Sampson and Margaret Warren. The month and year are hard to read, but the day seems rather clear. I see an 8 very clearly. To the left there's a 1 just to the right of the smudge. Above the 8 is what looks like an unclear t mixed with the smudge and an h, with the crosswise line of the t extending across it. I'd call this "18th." Do you see what I see? 4. Date on minister John Bailey's marriage report...Dec. 19, 1793. I can't tell if this is the date that he performed the ceremony, or if this is the date that he wrote up the details and filed it at the courthouse. In any case, it is 10 days later than the date of the marriage bond. Considering that the marriage license was issued on Dec. 18, I'd say that The typed transcriptions I have seen for this marriage, including the index of marriages on your website, have the date December 9, 1793. This is the date of the marriage bond. However, in this case, should we consider the additional evidence available and change the marriage date to December 19, 1793? Your call. *Bondsman Implications*: Aquilla/Aquila Wiley - bondsman at wedding of Benjamin Sampson and Margaret Warren Your website index already has the wedding of Aquilla Wiley to Hannah Warren (1790) and his brother Benjamin Wiley [Jr.]'s wedding to Elizabeth Warren (1792). The tax lists of 1792 clearly show two men with the name Benjamin Wiley and also an Acquilla [sic] Wiley. So, what we have here were Benjamin Wiley, Sr. [married 30 Oct 1755 St. John's Parish, Baltimore, MD to Elinor Sampson] with sons Benjamin Wiley Jr. and Aquila/Aquilla/Acquilla Wiley + a probable cousin of some sort Benjamin Sampson. Two Wiley brothers and a Sampson cousin married three Warren sisters in Lincoln County. So, this Benjamin Sampson was clearly tied to Baltimore County, Maryland. He turned 21 in 1793, the only year that his name appears on the Lincoln County, KY tax record. The 1794 tax book is missing, and there's no Benjamin Sampson in 1795. There's a different Benjamin Sampson in later Lincoln County marriage and tax records. Mary
