September 21, 1917 – January 18, 2008

Alice Marie Snowden Adams, 90, of El Dorado, died on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at Hudson Nursing Home following a long illness.

Born in a log cabin on Sept. 21, 1917, in Lincoln County, Ky., she was the daughter of a skilled carpenter and minister, the Rev. Charles Irvin Snowden and Bertie Fleming Snowden. Alice grew up near Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Prior to her leaving in 1937 for Anderson College in Anderson, Ind., she had taught Sunday School at the age of 12, and became superintendent of Sunday School at age 16 in a church with a membership of 500. She traveled with her brother, Roscoe, singing in various churches. She was a sharp fashion designer and dresser, and worked for a major Louisville department store. Through the years she directed school and church choirs, worked with children and directed plays. Before her retirement she was an interior design consultant in Sarasota, Fla.

Alice was a homemaker, an excellent seamstress and a devoted mother and a creative minister’s wife. She co-pastored with her husband of 69 years, the Rev. Robert Alex Adams, in the states of Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Alabama. She was a lifelong member of the Women of the Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ruth Snowden Watts, all of Kentucky; and great-granddaughter Avery Brooke Markovich of Indiana.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Robert Alex Adams of El Dorado; a brother, the Rev. Roscoe Snowden of Anderson; and three children, Robert Allen Adams and his wife, Ruth Fraysur Adams, of Henderson, Nev., a daughter, Marilyn Sue Grubbs and her husband, Perry, of Okolona, Miss., and a son, Charles Douglas Adams of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

She is also survived by four grandchildren, Frances Marie Adams Almeido and her husband, Patrick, of Henderson, Reagan Scott Grubbs and his wife, Andrea, of Anderson, Aleesha Quay Grubbs Ball and her husband, William Hudson Ball III, of Carlsbad, Calif., and Alexander Snowden Sterling Grubbs of Lake Wales, Fla. There are five surviving great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; one nephew, Joe Snowden and his wife, Jane, of Clearwater, Fla.; and three nieces, Pat Watts of Lexington, Ky., Kay Watts of Casselberry, Fla., and Juanita Watts Walker and her husband, Richard, of Granville, Ohio. Born Dec. 31, 1934, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Etta Williams Leigh. She was a homemaker and a member of New Life Church of God in Waynesburg.

Survivors include her husband, Rue Anderson of Eubank; three sons, Donald Anderson of Addyston, Ohio, Ronald Anderson of Norwood, Ohio, and Larry Anderson of St. Bernard; a daughter, Sherry Nelson of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

CRAB ORCHARD - Mr. Jimmy Lee Baker Sr., 63, of Crab Orchard, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital in Harrodsburg.

Jimmy was born in Lincoln County on December 29, 1945. He was the son of the late Earl and Virginia Ledford Baker.

Survivors include four daughters, Regina Fay Smith and husband Donelle of Stanford, Sonya Gale Baker of Harrodsburg, Melissa Stringfield and husband Brian of Harrodsburg, and Desria Irvin and husband Travis of Burgin; a son, Jimmy Lee Baker Jr. and wife Novella of Stanford; two brothers, Dennis Baker of Crab Orchard and Earl Baker of Nicholasville; a sister, Doris Elaine Baker of Waco; 19 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by a son, Steven Lynn Baker.

Funeral Services will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at McKnight Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Donnie Irvin officiating. Burial will be in Hopkins Cemetery with military rites by Caswell Saufley American Legion Post 18 of Stanford.

Lena May Sims Barnes, 99, of Science Hill, died Wednesday, April 8 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset.

A native of Somerset, she was born Sept. 28, 1909, to the late William Daniel and Effie Caldwell Sims. She was a homemaker, attended Camp Ground Baptist Church and the widow of Darwin Barnes. When she could no longer attend services at church, she enjoyed visiting with the church members at her home.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Roy and Lawrence Sims; one sister, Dolly Eastham; and four children, who died in infancy.

Survivors include one brother, Clarence L. Sims of Kings Mountain; one sister, Katha Rena Schnitzler of Danville; sister-in-law, Maxine Sims; nephews, Randy and Mona Sims, Jimmy and Juan Sims, Danny Sims, Bobby and Joan Sims, Roger and Faye Schnitzler, Billy and Becky Schnitzler, their families, many cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today (April 10) at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Bros. Albert McKinney and Gerald Ashley officiating. Burial will be in Double Springs Cemetery in Waynesburg.

BOILING SPRING LAKES, N.C. - Suneil Cooper Beckley, 79, of Boiling Spring Lakes, N.C., passed away on April 13 after a valiant 10-year battle with malignant melanoma.

Born April 11, 1930, in Stanford, Ky., she was the daughter of Ethel Mae and Wesley Armstrong Cooper.

She was a friend to all who met her and was an active member of her local Red Hat Society, Shallotte Women's Bowling League, a Mahjong club and several bridge clubs. During their 51 years of marriage, Suneil and Don lived in New York, New Hampshire, Maryland, Ohio and England. They enjoyed traveling to Europe and across America on many adventures.

Survivors include her loving husband of 51 years, R. Donald Beckley; daughter, Donna Galanti (Michael), and grandson, Joshua Cooper Galanti, of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; a brother, Chester Cooper, and wife Ruby; three special nephews, Mark and Mike Whitler and Jerry Cooper; and many beloved cousins.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at McCormack's Church, Ky. Hwy. 194 and Moore's Lane, Stanford, Ky., followed by a personal remembrance reception at the church.

Funeral services for Nancy Katherine “Kathy” Blackman, 85, of Vinemont, will be held on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville with a 2 p.m. graveside service. Rev. C.J. Cobb will officiate and Mrs. Blackman will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to service.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Blackman passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008 at her residence, surrounded by her family and loving caregivers of Southern Care Hospice. She was born on January 31, 1923 in Hustonville, Kentucky to George McHenry Peavyhouse and Nannie E. Cooper Peavyhouse .

Kathy married Thomas Blackman in 1946 and they had two wonderful sons together. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; her only sibling, Mary Nettie Peavyhouse Dietze and one step-great-grandson, Joseph William Knight.

Survivors include two Sons, William Mack (Melinda) Blackman; Phillip Joseph (Jan) Blackman; nine Grandchildren, Joseph, Ryan, Rebecca, James, Michael, Christopher, Leland, Daisy and Sharon Blackman; four step-grandchildren, Donnie (Paula) McPherson, Rachel (Kevin) Martin; Margaret-Ann Thomas and Jennifer (John) Knight; and twelve step-great-grandchildren.

The visitation will be held on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The pallbearers will be the grandsons. Kathy was loved and will be greatly missed.

CRAB ORCHARD - James "Jim" Bowman, 62, of Crab Orchard passed away Monday, April 27, 2009. He was husband of Edna "Eddie" (Baker) Bowman, whom he married on July 10, 1992. Jim was born in Berea on Jan. 25, 1947, to Perry and the late Virgie (McKnight) Bowman.

Survivors include his wife; father, Perry Bowman of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Renee Bowman Turner of Brodhead; six very special step-children Tina Goff of Crab Orchard, Gary (Anna) Smith of Crab Orchard, Michael "George" (Tina) Smith of Crab Orchard, Tim (Stacey) Smith of Crab Orchard, Tammy (Roger) Brock of Brodhead and Eric (Christy) Smith of Somerset; sister, Shelby Casler of Ocala, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren ;and four nephews, Brian, Darryl, Craig and Kevin Coffey.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Virgie Bowman; two daughters, Kelly and Stacey Bowman; and two Grandchildren, Michelle and Brandon Smith

Pallbearers will be Luke and Michael Smith, Jordan Brock, Brian Swinney, Freddie Mullins and Larry McKnight. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Reynolds and Bill Turner.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at McKnight Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Thad Eubank and Brother Jerry Owens officiating. Burial is at Wilmot Cemetery.

Born June 20, 1934, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late George and Othello Parrish Brown. She was retired from Decco-Art and a member of Greater Bethel AME Church.

Survivors include five children, Ronnie E. Brown, Rickie W. Brown, Timothy K. Coffey, Shawn P. Brown and Bridgett L. Harris; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and siblings George, William and David Brown, and Shirley Harper.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Greater Bethel AME Church. Burial in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Frances Rankin Evans Caldwell, 91, formerly of Larrimore Lane, Danville, died October 21, 2008.

She was the widow of Welsh Evans and Alvis “Hop” Caldwell. Born June 25, 1917 in Stanford, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Clarence Lee and Eva Alice Chrisman Rankin.

She was retired from Cricketeer and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: one brother, Clarence Lee (Ethel) Rankin of Stanford, one sister Lucille Kirkpatrick of Moreland, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers, George and Raymond Rankin and sisters, Elizabeth Greer, Margaret Edwards and Mildred Hester.

A graveside service was held Friday, October 24, at 3:30 pm at Hillcrest Cemetery with Rev. Quentin Scholtz.

CRAB ORCHARD - Bertha Edna Massie Day, 85, died Saturday April 18, 2009. She was the wife of Homer Day Sr., whom she married April 11, 2005.

Born March 28, 1924, in Honaker, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Maudie Street Massie. She was a retired seamstress from Palm Beach Clothing Co. and a member of Dix River Church of Christ.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three sons, Truman, McDonald and Larry Bottoms; nine step-children, Shirley Masters, Jerry Day, Juanita Rowe, Brenda Callahan, Glenn Day, Homer Day, Harry Helton, Doris Jean Gross and Kay Bradshaw; one sister, Mae Bottoms; eight grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 22 step-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two former husbands, A.J. Bottoms on June 27, 1955, and Forest Helton on April 6, 1995.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at McKnight Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Virgil Horseman and Maj. David Andrew Bottoms officiating. Burial will be in Dix River Church of Christ Cemetery.

STANFORD - Patricia Ann Chumbley Durham, 62, of Tick Ridge Road, Waynesburg, died Wednesday.

Born Dec. 3, 1946, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Ray and Mildred Ballard Chumbley. Pat was a former bus driver for Lincoln County and a member of Waynesburg Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Earl Durham; a son, Brian Durham of Lexington; a daughter, Tina Bailey of Waynesburg; a brother, Kenneth Chumbley of Glasgow; and five grandchildren. Burial in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

MARION - Florence L. Dye, age 82, of Marion, went to be with the Lord at 5:50 p.m. Sunday, July 2, 2006.

Born April 13, 1924, in Stanford, Ky., she was the raised and adopted by the late Eldon B. and Nellie (Woods) Siler. Daughter of William Henry Brummett and Ida M. Pollard.

On Dec. 12, 1945, she married George Dye, who preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 2005.

She was a homemaker and a resident of Marion for over 60 years. Before that, she lived in Stanford, Ky. She was also a member of the Richland Road Church of Christ.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty (Cliff) Evans of Marion; three sons, David (Taunda) Dye, Ples (Sandy) Dye and Dale (Lorie) Dye, all of Marion; nine grandchildren, Jay (Cindy) Wood, Jamie (Jennifer) Wood, Jeremy (Jen) Wood, Farrah (Craig Bringhan) Dye, Diana Dye, Samantha Evans, Chris Evans, Adam White and Gary White; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Bessie Knickrhm, Martha Reece and Georgia (Elton) Timmons; three brothers-in-law, John (Grace) Dye, Arlen (Jewel) Dye and Roy (Carolyn) Dye; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Bertha Hunt, Ally Johnson, Catherine Brummett and Margaret Hoagland; four brothers, Jasper and Henry Siler and Ab and Jay Brummett; and one great-grandson, Jacob Wood.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 7, 2006, at the Richland Road Church of Christ with ministers Matt Dahm and Dave Gladwell officiating. Burial will be at Marion Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Boyd Funeral Home.

James Elbert "Buddy" Dye, 74, of Stanford died Friday at Fort Logan Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Ramsey Funeral Home. Birth Index has mother as Pina Clarhaton . He was born in Marion County Kentucky.

Leslie Ray Elder, 75, of Danville passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.

Born Wednesday, June 21, 1933, in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Otis and Pearl Maupin Elder. He worked 25 years at Tripletts Farm Service and was a mechanic and former owner of Elder Farm Service. Mr. Elder was an Army veteran. He enjoyed fishing and watching television, particularly UK sports.

Survivors include his dear wife, Barbara Davis Elder of Danville, whom he wed April 23, 1954; a son, Leslie Paul Elder of Danville; brothers, Hubert Elder of Junction City, Clysten Elder of Danville and Melvin Elder of Burgin; a sister, Lena Cross of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers, Delbert, Richard and Jim Elder; and a sister, Ruth Wilson.

An Appreciation of Life service will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home with Dr. Tim Mathis officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be his nephews.

Born April 11, 1933, he was the son of the late Lee and Ethel Simpson Ellis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ova Mae Crowe Ellis.

Survivors include a son, Jimmie Lewis Ellis, and a daughter, Barbara Southerland, both of Maxey Valley; a brother, Eugene (Barbara) Ellis of Danville; two sisters, Shearleen Green of Danville and Linda (Donald) Austin of Liberty; friend and caregiver, Nona Carey of Hustonville; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home, with burial in Hustonville Cemetery.

Born Saturday, Sept. 7, 1918, in Letcher County, she was the daughter of the late William and Fannie Adams. She was a homemaker and the widow of Everett Eoff

Survivors include her daughter, Fanny Warren of Eubank; a granddaughter, Tiffany Ann Warren; and a niece and nephew, Pam Blair and Daniel Craft, both of Jeremiah.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Barnett & Demrow Funeral Home, Waynesburg, by Bro. Carson Atwood. Burial will be in Double Springs Cemetery.

Born April 15, 1920, in Perry County, he was a son of the late Joe and Isabele Eversole and the widower of Georgia Wells Eversole. He was a highly decorated World War II Army infantry veteran, having served in the European Theater as a machine-gunner. He also was a coal miner for 25 years, a farmer and a member of Stanford Church of Christ.

Survivors include three sons, Estill Eversole Jr. (Phyllis Ann) of Wauchula, Fla., R.J. Eversole of Hazard, Ky., and Larry Eversole (Margaret) of Hustonville; a daughter, Anna B. Sego (Steve) of Stanford; three brothers, Jesse James Eversole and Harold Eversole, both of Hazard, and Joe Eversole Jr., of Beaver Dam, Ky.; four sisters, Nora Rakel of Cincinnati, Ohio, Martha Jackson of Pennsylvania, Virginia Henson of Lexington, Ky., and Irene Smith of Perry County, Ky.; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

The service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Louis Hammonds and Rick Estes officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery, with military rites by Caswell Saufley Post 18 of the American Legion.

Born March 29, 1946, in New York, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Edward and Ida Julmy King. She was a bookkeeper.

Born April 8, 1927, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Celia Routin Mason. She was the widow of Carroll E. Gerkey.

Survivors include sons, Carroll E. Gerkey, Ovid R. Gerkey, David Gerkey, Ralph E. Gerkey, Harold Gerkey and Ricky Gerkey; daughters, Mary Yocum, Linda Smith, Ruth Folger and Phyllis Caudill; a brother, Millard Mason; sisters, Oritha Bunch and Elsie Terry; 28 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Services are 2 p.m. today at Mount Moriah Christian Church. Burial at Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Gregg Leshawn Givens, 40, of Stanford died Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 5, 1968, in Stanford, he was a son of Mrs. Sara Givens and the late Mr. Shirley Greene Givens. Gregg was a member of Boneyville Baptist Church. He graduated from Lincoln County High School in 1987 and attended the Rets Electronic School in Louisville, Ky. He also was a former employee of American Greetings Corp. of Danville, Ky.

Survivors include his mother, Sara Givens of Stanford; two brothers, Eric (DeAndrea) Givens of Louisville, Ky., and Kelvin (Anita) Givens of Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, Dionne Givens of Stanford, Ky.; grandmothers, Mrs. Louise Brown and Mrs. Laura Stewart, both of Stanford; his special caretakers, Barthenia Brown, Brenda Logan Cofer and Deborah Moran; a special uncle, Mr. Boney Sylvester Simpson; a special little cousin, Alexis Brown; special nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of special friends.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Boneyville Baptist Church officiated by Elder Robert Coulter Jr., Elder Chris Simpson and Elder Oliver Miller. Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

A native of Corbin, he was born Dec. 24, 1923, to the late George and Ida Peace Goodin. He was a retired truck driver for Dixie Ohio Trucking Company and a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie and Mark Goodin; one stepson, Terry Ray Claunch; four brothers, Lonzo Goodin, A.T. Goodin, H.B. Goodin and Amos Goodin; and one sister, Mossielee Simmons.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Goodin; two sons, Coyt Goodin Jr. and Larry Goodin; two daughters, Donna Goodin and Debbie Merkt; three stepdaughters, Joyce Poalello, Helen Buress and Cindy Wood; two brothers, Fessor Goodin and Maleum Goodin; three sisters, Marie Scalf, Audie O'Nan and Imogene Alsip; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services were April 4 at the Morris & Hislope Funeral Home in Science Hill with Bro. Michael Robinson officiating . Burial was in Double Springs Cemetery in Waynesburg.

Born April 25, 1984, in Lexington, she was a daughter of James "Big Jim" Hubert and Carol Ann Yentz Shearer of Waynesburg.

Survivors include her husband, Mark Edward Gray of Boyle County; her sons, Joseph and Jacob Goins of Indiana; a brother, "Little" Jimmy Shearer of Waynesburg; and her mother-in-law, Brenda Baker of Danville.

An Appreciation of Life service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Barnett & Demrow Funeral Home by Bro. Lester Bentley, with burial to follow in Double Springs Cemetery.

STANFORD - Greg Hager, 31, died Wednesday due to injuries he sustained in a vehicular accident.

He was born Friday, March 3, 1978, in Detroit, Mich., to the late Jackie Lee Hager and Linda Curry Hart. He was a laborer for Hayes Drilling Co., a member of 189 Laborer's Union, and a Baptist. Greg will be remembered for his love for Mercedes and Cadillacs, especially Seville Cadillacs.

He is survived by his mother, Linda Hart; and three brothers, Jackie Hager, Christopher Hager and Herbert Hager.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Fox Funeral Home, with burial in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

Two people died Wednesday in Lincoln County after their car hydroplaned and collided with another vehicle, Lincoln County Sheriff Curt Folger said. The accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. on U.S. 27 at Hall's Gap, about 2 miles south of Stanford.

Folger said that a northbound Pontiac Grand Am hydroplaned on a puddle of water as it came down Hall's Gap Hill. The Grand Am collided with a southbound Toyota Tacoma. The driver of the Pontiac, Wanda Nance, 29, was dead on arrival at Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford, the sheriff said. A passenger in the car, Greg Hager, 31, died at the scene. A puppy in the car also died. Nance had a Michigan driver's license, but she and Hager were thought to be living in the Highland area of Lincoln County, Folger said. Hazel Marie Coffman Hampton, 90, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at her residence.

Born Oct. 22, 1918, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Ida Bell Lane Coffman. She was the widow of Jim Will Hampton, a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Run Baptist Church.

Survivors include six sons and daughters, Helen (Ernest) Baugh of Danville, Kenny (Connie) Hampton of Hustonville, Gene (Shon) Hampton of Lancaster, Ruth (Johnnie) Goodin of Stanford, Charlotte (Curtis) Wren of Parksville and Larry (Lisha) Hampton of Danville; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Hampton; two brothers, Kenneth (Ann) Coffman and Charlie Coffman; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, William Hampton, and a great-grandson, Joseph Fisher.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Run Baptist Church with the Rev. Earnest Fields Jr.

Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home and Family Center, Junction City.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Heritage Hospice or Pleasant Run Baptist Church Building Fund.

After a long illness Mrs. J Randolph Harris breathed her last at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. John F Cash Tuesday evening. The end came peacefully and just as the shades of night were coming on the spirit of the young wife and mother returned to the God Who gave it. STANFORD - Amy Inease VonLinger Hazlett, 80, of Stanford died Wednesday at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.

Born Jan. 19, 1929, in Casey County, she was a daughter of the late William Rudolph and Zelpha Ragle VonLinger. She was the widow of Jimmy Hazlett. She was a homemaker, a member of Blue Lick Baptist Church, an avid UK sports fan and a former member of Lincoln County Senior Citizens.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Wayne Hazlett (Dee) and William Albert Hazlett, both of Stanford; three daughters, Sandra Colleen Robbins (Chuck) of McKinney, Helen Ingram of Stanford and Amy Lou Stevens of Crab Orchard; a brother, Amos VonLinger of Stanford; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her Jack Russell C.J.

Margaret Smith Hogue, 80, of Adairsville, Ga., formerly of New Salem, died Monday, May 4.

A native of Lincoln County, she was born Nov. 26, 1928, to the late Elmer and Julia Estes Smith. She was a homemaker, member of Locust Grove Baptist Church and the widow of Joseph M. Hogue.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Ronnie L. Hogue; one great grand daughter, Kingston Cornett; and one son-in-law, King Rex.

Survivors include three sons, Phil (Claudia) Hogue of Taswell, Ind., and Verdon "Wess" (Sue) Hogue and Joseph Wade Hogue both of Adairsville, Ga.; three daughters, Nyletta (J.W.) Walls of New Salem and Franke Rex and Wanda Colleen (Kenneth) Campbell both of Adairsville, Ga.; one daughter-in-law, Edna Harlen of Adairsville; three brothers, James Smith of Hustonville, Charles Smith of Ratcliff and Hershel Smith of Indiana; one sister, Shelia Cason of Stanford; 15 grandchildren; and 31 great grand grandchildren.

LANCASTER - Sandi Hunt, 55, of Stanford, formerly of Lancaster, died Tuesday at her home.

Born Sept. 5, 1948, in Huntsville, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Frances Markham. She was a retired accountant with LexMark.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce Hunt of Stanford; and her stepmother, Geraldine Markham of Huntsville.

Roger Dale Irvin, Sr., 51, of Crab Orchard, died Wednesday, April 8 at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington.

A native of Boyle County, he was born Aug. 3, 1957, to Iva Reynolds Irvin and the late Joe Irvin. He owned and operated Irvin Trucking.

He was also preceded in death by a son, David Wayne Irvin; two brothers, Terry and Tommy Irvin; and a sister, Betty Guinn.

Edith (Forester) Johnson was born at Faber, Whitley Co., KY on July 5, 1911, the daughter of James Elhanan Forester and Ida (Davis) Forester, and died at home on Mar. 18, 2006. She married Landmon R. Johnson on June 1, 1929.

Their surviving children are Carol (Johnson) Hicks Simmons, Hendersonville, NC, and Larry G. Johnson, Lexington, and grandchildren Lisa Johnson Howard, Diana Johnson, and Stacy Hicks, and great-grandchild Chloe Howard. She was predeceased by her husband, son Cloyd J. Johnson and daughter Linda Johnson Marshall, one child and two infants.

She was a lifelong, devout Southern Baptist and a member of the Miriam Rebekah Lodge. She was an excellent gardener, particularly of flowers and wildflowers. She taught food preservation courses in Flemingsburg during WWII. She had lived in Prestonsburg, Flemingsburg, Corbin and elsewhere in Kentucky . CRAB ORCHARD - Marvin Thomas Jones, 71, of Yosemite passed away Thursday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born February 24, 1938, in Pulaski County, Marvin was the son of the late Velt and Anna Petrey Jones. He was a member of Pleasant Point Baptist Church and a retired farmer who loved and cared for his wife and children.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Wanda Smith Jones; six children, Jerry, Kenneth, Timothy and Stephen Jones, Deborah Taylor and Sandra Blevins; four brothers, Melvin, Edward, Carl, and Jack Jones; four sisters, Christine Yocum, Lorene Dowell, Justine Tucker, and Mary Alice Goens; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his twin sons, Keith and Marvin Jones; two sisters, Elizabeth and Freda Jones; and one brother, Oren V. Jones.

MORELAND - Carolyn Frances Rakes Nunnelley, 87, of Hustonville died Wednesday, April 29, 2009.

Born May 28, 1921, in Marion County, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Lelia Gibbons Rakes. She served the community as one of the first female school bus drivers in Lincoln County, a telephone operator of the Hustonville exchange, and as bookkeeper for several businesses in Hustonville. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Beverley (John) Toombs of Moreland; two sisters, Dot (Charlie) Spears of Danville and Eydie (Gary) Sinkhorn of Parksville; three grandchildren, Leann (Jeff) Day of Winston-Salem, N.C., Gina (Brent) Hopper and Billy (Liz) Toombs, both of Lexington; and four great-grandchildren, Sam and John Day, and Jenna Raye and Laynie Hopper.

STANFORD - Mary Elizabeth Brock Peavyhouse, 81, of Stanford died Friday at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. She was the widow of Fred Peavyhouse.

Born Dec. 8, 1924, in Lincoln County, he was a son of William Potts and Mary Maston. He served In the Army in World War II and owned a heating and air conditioning company.

Survivors include his wife, Loraine Campbell Potts; four children, Jean Potts Blumer of Shalimar, Fla., William Potts III of Ludlow, Dennis L. Potts Morrow, Ohio, and Gary W. Potts of Carrollton; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Born Aug. 3, 1940, in Spiro, Okla., he was the son of the late Charles and Bessie Myrtle Lyons Reed and the widower of Yvonne Bullen Reed. He was a former postal clerk in Shreveport, La., and a Navy veteran. His hobbies included reading the Bible and gardening, and he was an avid U.K. Wildcats fan.

CRAB ORCHARD - Eli Saylor, 81, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Rockcastle Hospital. He was the widower of Cindy Roark Saylor who preceded him in death July 4, 1996.

Eli was born Jan. 26, 1926, in Harlan County, Ky. He was the son of the late Johnathan and Lora Caldwell Saylor. He was a retired farmer and a member of Harmons Lick Church of God.

Survivors include four sons, Dillard (Dorothy) Saylor of Lancaster, David (Clara) Saylor of Berea, Billy (Nancy) Saylor of Nicholasville and Walter Saylor of Lancaster; a daughter, Margaret Rogers of Mount Vernon; a brother, John H. Survivors include a son, Jerry (Teresa) Wallin; a brother, John (Rose) Wallin; sisters, Sally Burke, Evelyn Robinson and Ella Mae Graham; and three grandchildren, Joshua, Jeremy and Ivy Wallin.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest and Tom Wallin; three sisters, Mary Jackson, Elsie Elam and Lucille Berry; and a grandson, Malachi Christian Wallin.

STANFORD - Virginia Mae Wanamaker, 92, of Miami County, Ohio, died Dec. 30, 2008, in Ohio.

Born Feb. 22, 1916, near Turnersville, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Milton P. and Elizabeth J. McDaniel Hamilton. She lived most of her life in Dayton, Ohio, and was married to Fred R. Wanamaker.

Survivors include her two children, David L. Wanamaker and Beverly A. Egger; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

CRAB ORCHARD - Alice Howard Whitehead, 78, of Lexington, formerly of Crab Orchard, died Tuesday, April 27, 2009, at home after an extended illness.

Alice was born in the Harlan County community of Loyall on Oct. 1, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Hamp L. and Jesse Rogers Howard. She was the wife of Samuel Dewey "Frosty" Whitehead.

She was a member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church. She was a former manager of the claims accounting department of American Mutual Insurance Co. She was a member of the Insurance Women's League and a former operator of the Sweet Shop in Crab Orchard. She loved to bowl and enjoyed the fellowship with other bowlers.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 60 years, Frosty Whitehead of Lexington; three children, Rhonda (Levi) Gordon of Lexington, Gary Whitehead of Lexington and Avonia (Joseph) Allor of Lexington; one brother, Jimmy Wayne Howard of Brodhead; two sisters, Erna (Jaro) Albright of Crab Orchard and Sheryll (Mike) Goodwin of Stanford; four grandchildren, Lani Whitehead of Lexington, Chia Gordan of Lexington, Stacy (Chris) McCann of Seattle, Hunter Gastineau of Versailles; two great grandchildren, Ciaran and Owen Samuel McCann of Seattle; her caregivers, Nancy Tackett and Mary Ann Irvin; brothers-in-law, Willie Ray (Betty) Whitehead of Owington, Ky., Donald Hooker of Sharonville, Ohio, and Dale Bray of Maretburg, Ky.

Survivors include three sons, William Darrell Young, Larry Young and Kenneth Young; a daughter Janice Greer; a sister, Elwanda Gorley ; 17 grandchildren, 36 great- and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Young. Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.
