R. Austin, 89, formerly of Somerset, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at
Golden Living Center in Stanford. Glen was born Sunday, December 5, 1920 in the
New Salem area of
Lincoln County to the late Henry Jason and Emma Pearl Walls Austin. He was a
graduate of the old McKinney School, a retired supervisor with Diamond Chains in
IN. A US Army Air Corp veteran of WW II,
attended Highland United Methodist Church and was a member of New Salem Baptist
Church. Glen will be remembered for his love of basketball, fishing and most of
all, his gift of making and repairing clocks.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Betty Louise Butt
Austin; an infant daughter, Glenda Taylor Austin; five brothers, Jason, Jr.,
Arnold, Orville, Eugene and Donald Austin; and two
sisters, Betty Faye Sims and Alma McWhorter.
He is survived by his brother, Kenneth Austin and his wife, Donna of New Salem;
his sisters, Edith Johnson and her husband, Orville of New Salem and Shirley
Maples and her husband, Freeman of
Hustonville; his sister-in-laws, Dorothy Austin of Danville, Violet James &
Sandra Austin, both of Stanford, Myrtle Austin of New Salem and Geraldine Austin
of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
[Also survived by sister-in-law Violet Butt James.]
An Appreciation of Life
service will be 12 noon Saturday, November 6th at Highland United Methodist
Church by Rev. Don Scilley and Bro. Jared Moore. Burial will follow in Highland

ORCHARD — Lavern Ruby Irvin Ayers, 70, wife of William Jerry Ayers, died
Monday, Oct. 18, 2010, at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.
Born
on April 2, 1940, in Lincoln County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late
Lester and Irene Smallwood Ayres. She was a member of Crab Orchard Baptist
Church.
She
loved being a mother and grandmother. Her favorite hobby was flower gardening.
Survivors
include her husband, William Jerry Ayers; two children, Cheri (John) Kuhn and
William Craig Ayers; three granddaughters, Brittanee-Paige (Perry) Bolduc, Arika
(Devin) Estes and Irena
Manuel; two great-grandchildren, Alexa and Eiryn Estes; a step grandson, John
Alexander Kuhn III; and a step-great-grandson, Ashton John Kuhn.
In
addition to her parents, Lavern was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Irvin;
and a step granddaughter, Brandy Lynn Kuhn.
Services
were 11 a.m. today, Oct. 22, 2010, at Crab Orchard Baptist Church by Bro. Isaiah
Super. Burial is in Manuel Cemetery on Pine Grove Road.

— Galen Freeman Caldwell, 79, widower of Violet Stone Caldwell of Waynesburg,
died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in
Lexington.
He was born Saturday, Oct. 17, 1931, in Waynesburg to the late A.K. and Julia
Jenkins Caldwell. He was a lifelong cattle broker with friends and acquaintances
throughout the central and southern
Kentucky regions. He was a graduate of the old Waynesburg School and a member of
Double Springs Baptist Church.
Freeman served with distinction in the United States Army during the Korean
Conflict, where he received numerous honors for his military service, including
the Bronze Star for valor in combat and the
Purple Heart. He was a kind and generous man, who never met a stranger and was a
friend to everyone he encountered.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife; and two grandsons,
Galen Caldwell and Ricky Bussell.
He is survived by a son, Stephen Caldwell and his wife, Cassie, of Stanford; his
three daughters, Karen Caldwell and her husband, Lloyd Cress, of Lexington,
Cindy Sears of Lexington and Mitzy
Caldwell of Versailles; four grandchildren, Stephanie Caldwell McElroy, Rachel
Czernin and her husband, Max, Celessa Noe and her husband, Michael, and Samuel
Sears; and five great-grandchildren.
An Appreciation of Life service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, at Grace
Fellowship Church in Stanford by Bro. Vola Brown. Burial will follow in Double
Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m.
today at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may go to Grace
Fellowship Church.

— Carter Lee Caudill, 79, husband of Jean Stevens Caudill of West Melbourne,
Fla., died Oct. 14, 2010, at his daughter’s residence in Malabar, Fla.
Born
July 10, 1931, in Crab Orchard, Ky., he was the son of the late Carter and Anna
Brown Caudill. On Dec. 27, 1951, he was united in marriage to his wife Jean, and
they shared 58 wonderful
years together. He served our country as a staff sergeant in the United Sates
Air Force. He was an electrical engineer in the Aerospace Industry. Carter was a
member of the Melbourne Church of Christ, and
will be remembered for his love of woodworking, gardening and helping others.
Carter
will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Jean Stevens Caudill of West Melbourne,
Fla.; a daughter, Linda Burell (Jeff) of Malabar, Fla.; two grandchildren, Bryan
Norton of Palm Bay, Fla., and Jonathan
Burell of Malabar, Fla.; a brother, Jesse D. Caudill (Peggy) of Cincinnati,
Ohio; three sisters, JoAnn Simpson and Shirley Shelley, both of Cincinnati, and
Clara Proctor (Bobby) of Brodhead, Ky.; and a host of
nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
He
also was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Elder.

services for Mr. Carter Lee Caudill will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22,
2010, at Marvin E. Owens Home for Funerals with the Rev. Josh McKibben

KY went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010. He was born May 29, 1914
in Lincoln County to the late Bob and Mealie Coffman. He was the husband
of the late Louise Eggart Coffman. He was a self employed Dump Truck driver and
backhoe operator. He was a member of Geneva Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter,
Paulette Hazlett (Tony) of South Fork; five sons, Danny Coffman (Sandy), Bobby
Coffman (Juanita), Mickey, Ronnie and Joey Coffman all of South Fork; a brother
Dewey
Coffman of Geneva; three sisters, Ruby Marlowe of Geneva, Lily McMullins of
Stanford and Roberta Estes of Geneva; 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren
and 4 great-great grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by a daughter Regina Stanley, a son Donald Ray Coffman, a
brother Tody Coffman and a sister Luellen Wray.

3, 1922 in Lincoln County to the late John T. and Wadie Mae Thompson Rigsby.
She was a graduate Lancaster High School and the University of Kentucky. She was
a homemaker and a member of Stanford Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband Dr.
Bradford Curry, to whom she was married to on June 22, 1944, of Stanford;
several nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and nephews.; she was preceded
in death
by two sisters, LaVerne Rigsby Walker (Walter Owsley Walker) and Louise Rigsby
Hester (William Burch Hester).

Bradley “W.B.” and Malinda Hodge Brown. She was a homemaker and a member of
Olive Baptist Church.

Malinda Pennington of Metamora, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Christine Brown of
Cincinnati, Ohio; a half brother, William Clyde

was preceded in death by her husband, Steve A. Dixon, whom she married on Dec.
24, 1937, and who died on Aug. 2, 2003; her parents, a brother, Elmer Brown; and
a sister, Georgia Grace.

Friday, May 14th, 1943 to Raymond and Golden Williams. Raised in Eubank,
Kentucky by her grandparents Henry and Charity Johnson. What brought her most
pleasure beyond her family were close friends,
flower gardens, spending time at the ocean, going to yard sales and meeting new
people.
Sylvia is survived by her husband Clell, three daughters Marilyn Gooch and her
husband Ken of Waynesburg; Carolyn Combs of Waynesburg, Regina McDowell and her
husband Buddy of Georgetown,
three sons, Tommy Gooch and his wife Tracy of Crab Orchard, Jimmy Gooch and his

Born Nov. 18, 1954, in Pike County, she was a daughter of the late William Carl

Cartersville; sisters, Diana Singleton of Detroit, Mich., and Joan Rice of

She was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Paul Hager.

Born Oct. 22, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Roxie Powell
Cook. She was a member of Moreland Christian Church and was known as Grandmother
Hubbard to the many children she
loved and cared for over the past 36 years. She was preceded in death by her
husband, George Hubbard Jr.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce (James) Bandy, and a son, Roger Hubbard,
both of Moreland; a sister, Agnes Sneed of Louisville; four grandchildren,
Brian, Shea and Melissa Bandy and Anthony
Hubbard; and two great-grandchildren,
Tabor and Shealy Bandy.

Lena Lucille Cain Kelley, 80, of
Stanford, widow of Harold L. Kelley, died Monday at Ephraim McDowell Regional
Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Born June 15, 1930 in the
Turnersville
Community of Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Erie
Estes Cain.
Mrs. Kelley was a longtime and
faithful member of the Turnersville Christian Church where she served as song
leader and Sunday School Teacher, she was employed by the Lincoln County Farm
Bureau
Federation, serving as the secretary of that organization for 18 years. She was
editor of their monthly newsletter and was instrumental in starting the blood
drives for the Central Kentucky Blood Center
held at the Farm Bureau Building. After her retirement, she remained actively
involved with the Women's Committee and the blood drives to keep in touch with
the donors. On the volunteer level, she served the
community by holding leadership roles in PTA, 4-H and Homemaker extension
programs. She was a member of the McKinney Alumni Association and the Stanford
Garden Club.
She is survived by a son, Steven Lee
(Kathy) Kelley of Stanford; one daughter, Donna (Edward) Carpenter of Danville;
one brother, Donald (Coleen) Cain of Stanford; four grandchildren, Melissa
(Jacob)
Titman of Mentor, OH, Lesley (Alan) Johnson of Rockford, IL, Erin Kelley of
Panama and Justin Lee Kelley of Lexington; three great-grandchildren, Evan Luke
Johnson, Liam Alan Johnson and Caroline Ann
Titman; Mrs. Kelley was preceded in death by her parents, a son Benjamin Cain
Kelley and a sister, Madaline Durham.
Funeral Services will be 1 P.M. Saturday at Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford, visitation will be 5-8 P.M. Friday. Brother David Cornish and Chris Cornish will be officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

Ronald "Dickie" Kidd, 70,
of Stanford died Tuesday at his home. He was born May 18, 1940 to Edith Young
Kidd and the late Lawrence Kidd. Dick retired from IBM after 30 years and
enjoyed his winters in
Jensen Beach, Florida. His passion was playing golf and he was always looking
for that "perfect driver". He was an avid reader and enjoyed solving a
"New York Times' crossword puzzle.
Survivors include his wife of 48
years, Sheila Bailey Kidd and daughter Lisa Ann Kidd. He leaves behind sisters
Barbara Cooper and Peggy Royce, and a brother Bill Kidd. Dick also leaves behind
several nieces and
nephews and his devoted chocolate lab, Katie.

Margie Pauline
Gresham Mattingly, 82, of St. Marys, WV, passed away after a brief illness on
Sunday, October 17. Margie was born in Moreland, KY and spent her childhood days
in Lincoln County, KY. She
was a graduate of the Wood County Vocational School of Practical Nursing Program
in Parkersburg, WV and completed her requirements for Registered Nurse at
Hocking Technical College in Nelsonville, OH.
She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit of St.
Joseph’s Hospital in Parkersburg, WV and as a Nursing Instructor at Colin
Anderson Center in St. Marys, WV. She held several
medical certifications and was extremely active in the community teaching First
Aid, CPR and other medical courses to various groups. Her dedication to her
profession and tireless efforts were recognized by
community and medical leaders alike.
Margie was also
a Notary Public and leasing agent in the oil and gas business in her early
career. In later years, she and her husband, Robert, were the owners and
proprietors of the Silver Spur Night Club in
St. Marys, WV. During those years, she booked popular bands such as McGuffy
Lane, Randy Travis, Alabama, Lee Greenwood and the Gatlin Brothers.
Always up for a
new adventure and challenge, Margie enjoyed traveling and made many trips
throughout the US and other parts of the world. She joined her husband in Alaska
while he worked on the Alaskan
pipeline and traveled extensively throughout the Alaskan wilderness with
great bravado and a sense of adventure. She especially liked fishing for salmon
while in Alaska. A highlight for both of them, when the
pipeline was completed, was returning to West Virginia by way of the very rugged
and unpopulated Alcan Highway. Margie also enjoyed bowling with her nursing
friends in earlier days as well as deep sea fishing
in the South and was a gifted musician who could play the piano by ear after
hearing a song only once. Margie had a love for life and a spirit for fun and
was also a great story teller with a wonderful sense of humor.
Margie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Robert Lee
Mattingly, Sr., who passed away on September 7, 2010; her father and mother,
Watt and Peachie May Gresham; brothers William, Dee,
Edgar, Bus and Luther Gresham; sisters Nell Bracket, Catherine Manning, and
Evelyn Atwood. She is survived by her children Peggy Ware (Steven) of Mountain
Lakes, NJ; Robert Leo Mattingly of Waverly, WV;
and Mary Lynn Carlton (Gary) of Placerville, CA; grandchildren Jeff Mattingly,
Nina DeCoster (Will), Spencer Ware, and Ben Mattingly; step grandchildren
Matthew Carlton (Lisa), Dan Carlton, and Becca
Carlton; great granddaughter Georgia DeCoster and great grandson Crosby
Sebastien DeCoster; and step great granddaughters Jillian and Allison Carlton;
sisters Christine Grant and Lucille Smith, and numerous
cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will
be held in W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home, Hustonville, KY on Friday, October 22 from
12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., with funeral services by Brother Jonathan Grizzell
following at 2:00 p.m. Burial will
be at the Moreland Cemetery in Moreland, KY. Pallbearers are Robert L.

area, in Lincoln County. She was a homemaker and a member of Green River

wife and care giver. This chapter in her life completed, a life well lived and
rest well earned.
Besides her parents, Vertrice was preceded in death by her beautiful daughter,
Barbara Miracle; two sisters, Margaret Long and Edna Young Craig; and five
brothers, Edgar, Alvin, Albert,
Cecil and Bill Long.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Hubert Miracle of Stanford; and
leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Mary Miracle Dishon of Danville;

L. Owens, 54, of Stanford, passed away Saturday, November 13, 2010 at University
of Kentucky Medical Center. He was born Sunday, January 8, 1956 in Corbin.
Kenneth was a retired
US Air Force veteran and in his 19 years of service, he was a munitions systems
specialist and a member of the honor guard. After his years with the Air Force,
Kenneth went to work at Corning in
Harrodsburg as a fork lift operator. He was a Baptist and enjoyed fishing and
hunting. But most of all, he will be remembered for his love of his
grandchildren and doing special things with them,
especially go-Kart racing.
He is preceded in death by, Hershel Owens; and a sister, Peggy Pagliarulo.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Debbie Owens of Stanford; his daughter,
Kelly Ammons of Stanford; his grandchildren, McKenzie and Collin; his parents,
Betty and Kenneth Jones of London; his

— Joseph Vincent Peyton, 61, of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Hustonville,
died Friday, Nov. 5, 2010.
Born June 12, 1949, he was a son of the late Herman and Nina Cox Peyton. He was
a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in civil engineering and
a master’s from the
University of Tennessee. He worked for the TVA as senior engineer, where he had
worked since college. He was an avid biker and snow skier.
Survivors include his brother, Bill (Beverly) Peyton, and niece, Iris Peyton,
all of Hustonville.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home by Bro. Greg Nimmo.

“Tom” Plummer, 78, of Stanford died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010. He was the
husband of Mildred Murphy Plummer.
Born Dec. 24, 1931, in Boyle County, he was a son of the late James and
Rose Hill Plummer. He worked at Burkes Bakery and Centre College and attended
Stanford Church
of the Nazarene. Survivors include his wife; two children, Pamela (Marl)
Daugherty of Danville and Richard (Connie) Plummer of Paducah, Ky.; three
grandchildren, Tommy Plummer,
Jeremy Daugherty and Michael Daugherty; one great-grandchild, Brianna
Daugherty; and two brothers, James Plummer of St. Petersburg, Va., and Jerry
Plummer of Lexington.

she was the on the daughter of the late John C. and Elsie Chadwell Blanton. She
was a retired employee of Whirlpool
and a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

— Raymond Stull, 90, of Kings Mountain, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010,
at Norton-Suburban Hospital in Louisville.
Born Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1919, in Kings Mountain, he was a son of the late John
Henry and Mattie Privett Stull. Raymond was a retired farmer, merchandiser and
owner of a fertilizer business.
He was a member of the old Kings Mountain Methodist Church and Ruritan Club. He
was very active for many years with fundraising for Pleasant Point Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jane Stull; his son,
Robert Stull; a son-in-law, Jerry Moore; two brothers, Elmer and Jasper Stull;
and a sister, Dorothy Gooch.
Survivors include two daughters, Carole Moore of Kings Mountain and Sue (Bill)
Buckman of Frankfort; a daughter-in-law, Judy Stull of Kings Mountain; a
brother, Carlton (Flora) Stull of Kings

Beach, S.C., passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, at her residence.
Born on Monday, Aug. 31, 1936, in New Salem, she was a daughter of the late Bill
and Pauline Wilcher Kennedy. Janet wed Arthur L. “Cotty” Trimble of
Hustonville on Oct. 15, 1955. She
was a homemaker and a member of Versailles Methodist Church. Janet loved the
beach.
Janet leaves behind her husband of 55 years, Arthur; two sons, Jeffery (Rose)
Trimble and Kyle (Melissa) Trimble, both of Lexington; a daughter, Pauletta
(Buck) Owens of Hustonville;
two grandchildren, Jamie and Sherman Owens; and four great-grandchildren,
Veronica, Brittany, Maecee and Daniel Owens.

veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Vyvyan Welch; his
children, Charlotte Cline of Trumbull, Conn., Vicci Penman, Michael Welch and
Beverly Guest, all of Stanford; nine grandchildren;
20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death
by a daughter, Peggy Jo Welch.

Flora Elizabeth Carson White age 93, died on Monday, October 11, 2010. She was
born on May 10, 1917 and was the daughter of the late Napolion “A.B.” Carson
and the late Elizabeth Lackey Carson.
She was preceded in death by her son Gary M. Miller, sisters, Viola Carson, Sue
Ada Carson, Della Mae Parker, Mattie Pearl Alcorn, and brother Sammuel Carson.
Mrs. White was a graduate of Lincoln High School Stanford, KY. She was a member
of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she served in several positions.
She worked in Louisville, KY for the U.S. Government making equipment and
supplies for the U.S. Armed Forces during WW II.
Mrs. White was also employed as private duty worker, a cook and retired from
Kentucky School for the Deaf, Danville, KY.
Mrs. White leaves to cherish her loving memory, daughters, Olivia M. Coffman,
Jemelia Rosenthal, Marcia Carson, Bobbie Sue Carson; her son, Earl Carson;
caregiver and granddaughter,
Stacey Harrison; 16 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 12 great- great
grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
