LILLARD, Robert Whitley
July 31, 1847 - May 22 1905
Robert Whitley Lillard departed this life
May 22, 1905. He was born near Stanford, July 31 1847. His mother was Miss Anne
Whitley, daughter of Wm. Whitley, a pioneer and well-known Indian fighter.
His father was a Baptist minister and editor of the Western Recorder.
Mr. Lillard began his education at
Georgetown, KY., but graduated from Washington and Lee University, Lexington,
VA., in 1871. After this he spent some time traveling in Europe staying for the
most part in Germany pursuing his studies.
Shortly
after his return, he married Miss Susie Craig, daughter of Dr. John Craig, the
distinguished surgeon. To them two children were given, Miss Sadie and Ashley
Lillard. Less than a year ago he
married Miss Fanny Gray, of Winchester, Tenn. Mr. Lillard's characteristics were
strongly marked. Affable, he won many friends, candid, affectionate, true, he
retained them. A Christian from early boyhood,
he grew stronger in the faith as the years passed and more consecrated in his
walk and conversation. "Laying aside every weight he ran with patience the
race set before him, looking unto Jesus, the author and
preceptor of faith." He has won the victor's crown. In his last moments he
was given a vision of the beautiful lights of the eternal city, his heavenly
home and the strength to declare it to those about him. He
lives in the hearts that loved him. I cannot say and I will not say that he is
dead. He is just away. A Friend.
