DeBORD, George W.

Died 20 Jun 1905

DeBord - A grand old man went to a rich reward when the spirit of Mr. George W. DeBord took its flight to mansions above. He was one of
those excellent citizens who had the respect of his fellow man because he was honest, honorable, straightforward and  sincere. No
Man in Lincoln County stood higher than did this gallant old ex-Confederate soldier and now that he is no more a feeling of sadness permeates the heart of everyone who know him.

The cause of his death, which occurred in Louisville Tuesday morning, was a fall and squeeze he received. He was stopping at the Fifth Avenue Hotel, having
gone to Louisville to the Confederate Reunion, and when he started to the dining room, he mistook the door and fell into an open elevator shaft, the elevator boy having
carelessly left the door open. Before he could get out, the elevator came down on him and squeezed him so severely that his bowel became paralyzed and death followed.
Not wanting to cause his family alarm, Mr. DeBord did not advise them of his condition until Monday and his son, George DeBord went as soon as possible to his bedside,
getting there a few hours before his father breathed his last.

The remains were prepared for burial and brought to his home in Crab Orchard that night. The burial occurred at 3 p.m. yesterday, in the presence of an immense
crowd. Revs, O. M. Huey and R. B. Mahony made short talks at the home and at the grave . The odd Fellows and Masons officiated. Rev. R. R. Noel,
representing the Confederate soldiers, also spoke at the grave.

Mr. DeBord was born in Somerset and was the son of Able DeBord, a Methodist preacher. He moved to Crab Orchard many years ago and married
Miss Hannah Foley, who with seven children survive. The children are; Mrs. Holdam Stuart, now residing in California, Misses Bettie and Sallie DeBord, and
Messrs. George W., John, Henry and Leon DeBord.

Much sympathy is felt for them all in their irreparable loss.

Mr. DeBord served this county as jailor for seven years and made a most excellent one. He made friends of his prisoners, many of whom would
have sacrificed their all for him and they were as sure to vote for him if given the opportunity as the election day came.

He was a candidate for sheriff in the primary of December last and was defeated by only one vote. He was a staunch democrat, as his card printed in this paper some 10 day ago bears proof.

As a soldier, Mr. DeBord was said to have had a few equals and no superiors, always in the thickest of the fight, battling for the cause he loved so dearly.
He was in Morgan's command, 6th Kentucky regiment, (Grigsby's). Out of honor to Mr. DeBord, court adjourned Wednesday afternoon
and the lawyers and many others for here attended the funeral.

{Leon Conor DeBord - b. 29 May 1885 - d. 14 Apr 1916 - s/o George W & Hannah V. Foley DeBord, buried at Crab Orchard Cemetery}
