Givens, Bessie Engleman

January 01, 1865 - January 19, 1906

That death, clothed in its darkest mantle, loves a shining mark, was never more distressingly proven than when on last Friday morning after a short illness of pneumonia the spirit of Mrs. Bessie Engleman Givens, wife of Mr. Bownen W. Givens, soared away to that higher and better world where death and sorrow are unknown.

Mrs. Givens was 41 years of age and since early girlhood had been a devout member of the Christian church.

In 1889 she was married to the man who is now bereft of a gentle and faithful wife. Their union was blessed with five children, the oldest 16 and the youngest scarcely two years of age, and they with others of her family are utterly crushed at the irreparable loss they have sustained. A Christian in all the word implies, the natural tenderness and loveliness of her character were made more manifest to those who knew her intimately and at once caused true admiration on the part of those who were mere acquaintances.

Chief among Mrs. Given's ambitions in life, and which bespoke a most admirable character, was a desire to make her home one of attractiveness an joy for her husband and children, and the other that she might live to see her offspring grow to full man and womanhood still filled with the consciousness of an Almighty Providence, in whom she had so carefully taught them to trust. In the one her fondest hopes were realized; in the other it cannot be that seed which she as sown will be for naught.

On Saturday afternoon at the Hubble Christian church, where she had long been a worker, Rev. Tinder, of Lancaster, conducted the funeral services, after which the remains were brought to Buffalo cemetery and amid a concourse of sorrowing friends consigned to its resting place, there to await the hour that shall mark the end of time separating the dutiful wife and mother from the ones she loved so well.

[Shirley Dunn's book has her death date as 19 January 1939. A misprint or the tombstone engraving is incorrect.]

Then he was taken back to the hospital-June 24 and back in intensive care until his death June 27. The doctors told him after his first attack his heart was half damaged. So it was understandable he could not go through another one. I visited him twice while he was in the hospital. He asked me to lay my hands on him and pray for him. I asked him if he was right with God. He said, ''I was when I was a boy.'' I want to say to his loving wife and children, get right with God and go live with Daddy. We hope our loss is Heaven's gain.
