Sophia K. Alcorn. Born in Lincoln County in 1883, she invented the Tadoma method to teach deaf-blind individuals to speak
through the feel of sound vibrations from the lips and cheeks. The method was named for two deaf-blind students, Tad Chapman
and Oma Simpson. The system still used internationally.
Sophia K. Alcorn - Sophia Alcorn devised a system of written visual symbols to assist in developing speech in deaf children.
Known as the "Alcorn Symbols," the system is used by teachers of deaf today. Remembered as educator from Ky. School for
Deaf in Danville. She was active in Stanford Presby. Church. Died, 1967, and buried in Buffalo Springs Cemetery, Stanford.

MOUNTVILLE, Pa. - William A. Allen, 64, of Lancaster, Pa., formerly of Lincoln County, died Saturday at Lancaster General
Hospital. Born in Corbin, Ky., he was the son of the late Isaac F. and Addie Dunn Allen.

He was a retired bricklayer and member of First Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a life member
of the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife, Mary Johns Allen; two daughters, Gail H. Allen and Susan D. Hill,
both of Lancaster, Pa.; a brother, Robert Allen of the Goshen community in Lincoln County; a grandson whom he raised,
William T. Allen of Wrightsville, Pa.; three granddaughters; and a great-grandson.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at John E. Kraft Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mountville Cemetery. Visitation will be
1-2 p.m. Wednesday.

Ezra Foster Ashley, 79, of 1120 West Ridge Rd., Eubank, died Tuesday, May 8 at the Humana Hospital Lake Cumberland
in Somerset. A native of Bethelridge, KY., she (He) was born April 1, 1911 to the late Sarah Wall and Solomon Ashley.

He was a member of the Lincoln County Four Quartet, music director at Highland Methodist Church in Lincoln County.
He was also a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Witt Ashley; four sons, Carroll Ashley, Orleans, IN., Harold Ashely, Las Vegas, Nev.,
Robert Ashley, Eubank and Gerald Ashley, Somerset; three daughters, Joaline Collier, Versailles, Pauline Wilson, London
and Rutheda Reel, Warrenton, MI., four sisters, Lettie Barbour, Columbus, OH., Dora Wesley and Millie Lewis, both of
Chattanooga, TN., and Gladys Carrier, Somerset; and 21 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, May 11 at the
Pulaski Funeral Home with Dr. Jim Hamilton and Rev. Vola Brown officiating. Burial was in Science Hill Cemetery.

STANFORD - for James A. Ashley, 82, of Crestview, Fla., formerly of Casey County, died Friday at his home.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Buffalo Springs Cemetery by the Rev. Donna Jones. Military rites will be
performed by Caswell Saufley Post 18, American Legion. 82, of Crestview, Fla., Born July 4, 1923, in Bethelridge, he
was the son of the late Terrell G. and Viola Whitmer Ashley. He was employed as a telephone maintenance technician,
was a member of First Methodist Church of Crestview and served in the Marines during World War II. He worked at
Elgin Air Force Base for 37 years, was a member of the Concord Masonic Lodge #50 and was a scout master for the
Boy Scouts of America for 27 years.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret G. Ashley; two sons, Eugene D. Ashley of Richmond Hill, Va., and J. Stephen Ashley
of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; a daughter, Denise Tuck of Houston; two brothers, Carl W. Ashley of Stockdale, Texas, and Perry
J. Ashley of Columbia, S.C.; and two sisters, Eunice Pence and Hulah Snow, both of Stanford. Arrangements are incomplete
with Spurlin Funeral Home.

STANFORD - Services for Lucille Atwood, 77, of Stanford, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Spurlin Funeral Home by the Rev.
Johnny Adamson. Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

Born Nov. 24, 1927, in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late James and Florence Sweeney Atwood. She was a
homemaker, a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church and the widow of Wince Atwood.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Atwood of Stanford; two daughters, Judy Atwood and Janet Sudduth, both of Stanford; a brother,
Louis Atwood of Stanford; two sisters, Louise Lane of Cincinnati and Lillian Smither of Port Richey, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jay and Bill Atwood, Lee Sudduth, Alex and Gatlin Greer, Daniel Renner and Justin Kolasa. Honorary
pallbearers are Mary Sudduth, Melanie Warren, Nicole Jenkins, Paige Isenberg, Heather Petrey and Ange Miracle.

DANVILLE: Services for Jereline Bailey, 62, of Streamland Drive, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home
by the Rev. Jolene Bailey. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. She died Wednesday at her home.

Born Nov. 28, 1942, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of Dewey Coffman of Geneva and the late Beatrice Hatter
Coffman. She was a retired factory worker and a member of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church of God. Survivors include
her husband, Ferrell Bailey; a daughter, Sheila Baker of Danville; five sisters, Jewell Lynn, Shirley Poynter, Patricia Cummins
and Anita Bowman, all of Geneva, and Phyllis Long of Hustonville; a brother, Lowell Coffman of Geneva; and two grandchildren
whom she raised, Zachary Franklin and Angel Hall, both of Danville.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Henry. Pallbearers will be Buddy Peek, Jerry and Charles Bailey, Brad Murphy,
Lewis Ray Allison, Darrel Rice, Butch Hatter and Jerry Seay. Honorary pallbearers are nieces and nephews and Thomas Franklin.

LANCASTER - Ann Baker, 84, of Morrow Court, died Saturday at Lancaster Christian Care Center.

Born May 17, 1921, in Garrard County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus and Lillie Ray Adams. She was retired from
Palm Beach Co. after 20 years, and a member of Lancaster Baptist Church. She was the widow of Olivette Baker.

Survivors include a son, Ronny Baker of Lancaster; a sister, Dorothy "Dot" Shockley of Lancaster; a brother, Virgil Adams
of Crab Orchard; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ramsey Funeral Home by the Revs; Bob Rush and Zach Terry. Burial will be in
Lancaster Cemetery.

He was the son of the late John D. and Sallie Coyle Baker. Mr. Baker is survived by his daughter Nitze and her husband John Stinnett of Mercer County, five brothers; Donald Ray Baker, Jim Baker, Kenny Baker, David Baker, and Ronnie Baker all of Mercer County. He is also survived by two sisters; Irene White and Corene Humfleet, both of Mercer County and one grandson, Josh Stinnett of Junction City, his special friend Faye Worthington and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Linda Statom Baker and his son Keith Baker.
He was a retired Car Dealer, a member of Calvary Baptist Church and loved restoring old cars.

Born April 1, 1930, in Stanford, she was the daughter of the late James F. and Mary Ann Adams Atkins. She was an employee of Genesco Shoe Co. for 30 years and a member of Victory Tabernacle and Redemption Road Church. She was the widow of A.L. "Red" Bray.

Survivors include four daughters, Debbie Carpenter of Franklin, Betty Chansler of Mount Juliet, Tenn., and Brenda Inman and Joeann Bray, both of LaFollette, Tenn.; a sister, Ella Moore of Stanford; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 6 p.m. Wednesday at Victory Tabernacle in Franklin by the Revs; James Lewis and Eddie Eve with visitation from 4-6 p.m.

Services also will be 10 a.m. Friday at Redemption Road Church in Lincoln County by the Rev. Gary Yocom with visitation from 6-9 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Goodwater Cemetery in Mount Victory. Memorials may go to Hospice of Dayton. Fox Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born March 5, 1943, in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Gusta and Matilda Bless Brenda.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, an Air Force veteran and a graduate of Valparaiso University.

Survivors include a sister, Shirley Martin of Moreland; and two brothers, Herbert Brenda of Crab Orchard and Arthur Brenda of Somerset.

A native of Lincoln County, she was born Aug. 17, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Jim and Bertie Dowell Oaks. She was a homemaker, member of Friendship Baptist Church and the widow of Clarence Ben Caudill.

Survivors include four sons, Donald, Clarence Ben Jr. and James Hugh Caudill, all of Waynesburg, and Randy Caudill of Eubank; six daughters, Bertie Ellen Jones of Stanford and Melissa Caudill, Bonnie Denny, Rita Kay Caudill, Vickie Sue Kidd and Rhonda Denny, all of Waynesburg; two sisters, Lena Blanton of Crawfordsville, Ind., and Edna Smith of Seymour, Ind.; 31 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services for James Wyatt "Jim" Combest, 68, of Shelby Street, Junction City, will be 1 p.m. Friday at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home by the Rev. Ernest Martin. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Born July 26, 1934, in Casey County, he was the son of the late Wyatt and Myrtle Coffey Combest. He was a former employee of R.R. Donnelley & Sons and a member of Junction City First Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Sammy and Charles N. Combest, both of Junction City, and James A. Combest of Crittenden; a daughter, Alice F. Dovico of Daytona Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be George Johnson, Ray Shannon, Steve Graves, Lawrence, Pete and Larry Kendrick, and Mike Harmon.

Honorary pallbearers are Sonny Bodner and members of the adult men's Sunday school class of Junction City First Baptist Church.

Born in Parksville, he was a son of the late Charles and Roxie Powell Cook. He was a barber for 48 years and owner of Bowman-Schnitzelburg Barber Shop in Louisville. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Nevius Cook; a son, Gary Cook of Louisville; two sisters, Agnes Sneed of Louisville and Pauline Hubbard of Moreland; and two grandchildren.

She died Monday at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 4, 1908, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late George and Mina Swope Lucas. MORELAND - Services for Geneva Nancy Cobbum Elkins, 79, of Lancaster, will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Stanford Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Born April 10, 1926, in Shipshewana, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Clint and Nancy Stewart Cobbum. She was a member of The Stanford Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include her husband, James W. Elkins; three sons, Steven Elkins of Georgetown, Larry Elkins of Lancaster and Danny Elkins of Kings Mountain; four daughters, Rebecca Goins and Beverly Arnett, both of Lexington, Bonnie Kleckner of Danville and Donna Tuttle of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Hazel Estepp of Cincinnati and Cleo Elkins of Lynn Haven, Fla; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. STANFORD - Cordia Elliott, 85, of Lexington, formerly of Lincoln County, died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

Born Feb. 1, 1920, in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late Elias and Lucinda Greer. She was a homemaker and the widow of the Dewey Elliott.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Elliott of Crab Orchard, Willis Elliott of Nicholasville and Richard Elliott of Stanford; four daughters, Wanda Clark of Lancaster, Sharon Bain and Debbie Peel, both of Nicholasville, and Darlene Elliott of Stanford; a sister, Emma Patterson of Lancaster; 26 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby and James Elliott.

Born March 4, 1934, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Isaiah and Nell Elliott Yocum.

She was a retired Whiteland, Ind., Police Department dispatcher. She was a charter member of the ladies auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6978 and Order of Eastern Star in Whiteland.

She also was a member of American Legion Post 121 women's auxiliary in Washington, Ind.

Survivors include her husband, Robert D. Elliott; two daughters, Donna Everett-Valdez of Phoenix, Ariz., and Danna Everett of Whiteland; two sons David and Daren Everett of Petersburg; a sister, Marie Thompson of Deland, Fla.; two brothers, Dallas Maxey of Shelbyville, and Kenneth Yocum of Danville; and 10 grandchildren.

CRAB ORCHARD - James Calvin "J.C." Farmer, 70, of Crab Orchard, died Wednesday at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lexington.

Born July 13, 1934, in Stanford, he was a son of the late Dink and Mae Middleton Farmer. He was a former employee of Interstate Trucking Systems and an Army veteran.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Warren of Covington; and two brothers, Jack Farmer and W.D. Farmer, both of Crab Orchard. Private graveside services will be in Manuel Cemetery.

STANFORD - Services for Weaver Fields, 74, of Dunnville, will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Spurlin Funeral Home by the Rev. Rick Naylor and Arlen Sanders. Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

Born Sept. 22, 1930, in Knox County, he was a son of the late Elijah and Lula Campbell Fields. He was a truck driver and a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Meadows Fields; a son, Dale Ray Fields of Dunnville; three daughters, Carley Taphorn of Sharonville, Ohio, Melissa Feyka and Robin Bruin, both of Port Orange, Fla.; two stepsons, Ernest Lawson of Burnside and Edward Lawson of Russellville, Ohio; a brother, Pearl Fields of Arlington Heights, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

MORELAND - Blanche McGirr Gaddis, 89 of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Saturday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital.

Born Jan. 7, 1916, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late James Madison and Amanda Pearl McGirr and the widow of John Gaddis. She taught at Moreland High School and was retired from Mount Healthy School System. She was a Methodist and a graduate of Moreland High School and Centre College.

Survivors include a son, William Gaddis of Cincinnati; a brother, Morris McGirr of Danville; two sisters, Agatha "Sug" McGirr of Moreland and Lela Whitson of Cold Springs; two grandsons; and four great granddaughters. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at W. L. Pruitt Funeral Home by the Rev. Scott Wilson. Burial will be in McGirr-Sandidge Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steve McGirr, Ricky King, Tommy McGirr, Johnny McGirr, Bob Gaddis and Brian Gaddis.

STANFORD - Ruby Hazlett Gander, 70, of Newlands Lane, died Monday at Stanford House nursing home.

Born March 13, 1935, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late George and Katie Phillips Hazlett. She was a homemaker and a former employee of Cowden Manufacturing and Palm Beach companies. She was a member of Stanford Presbyterian Church and the widow of Alvin Gander.

Survivors include two sons, Bo Gander and Gary W. Gander, both of Stanford; two daughters, Pam Gander Johnson of Stanford and Donna Gander Horne of Danville; three sisters, Virginia Crain of Louisville, Serena Mullikin of Richmond and Sue Fox of Stanford; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Chase, Roy and Julian Gander, Tim and Shea Lair, Wayne Burger, and Hunter and Blake Horne.

Born May 7, 1919, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Carroll Smith and Lizzie Lucas Smith. She was a seamstress at Cowden Manufacturing for 25 years and a member of Mount Salem Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Gloria J. Smith of Stanford and Vickie Corhn of Liberty; four sisters, Maxine Lane of Stanford, Francis Russell of Danville, Shirley Coleman of Fairfield, Ohio, and Murrell Durham of Yosemite; two stepgrandchildren; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe K. Gifford.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Spurlin Funeral Home by the Revs; Brad King and Travis Farris. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Born June 5, 1909, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Easter Peck Trent. She was a homemaker, member of Stanford First Church of God and a Kentucky Colonel. She was the widow of Charlie Adams and Vernon Godbey.

Survivors include two daughters, Edith Tarter of Batavia, Ohio, and Geneva Brier of Lebanon, Ohio; a son, Charles Adams of Melbourne; a sister, Myrtle Dyehouse of Stanford; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Stinnett.

Visitation is 6:30-9 p.m. today at Fox Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Born June 15, 1922, in Kings Mountain, he was the son of the late Mary Etta Gooch. He was a farmer and a member of Pleasant Point Baptist Church.

Born July 5, 1928, in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Allie Atwood Cochran. She was a homemaker and attended Maxey's Valley Church of God.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Southerland of Moreland; two sons, Jerry D. Overstreet of Lincoln County, and Charles C. Overstreet of Bradfordsville; a brother, Garland Cochran of Liberty; three sisters, Ima Jean Murphy, Eva Wethington and Evylene Vanoy, all of Liberty; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Born Feb. 9, 1910, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Richard M. and Nancy Elizabeth Elkin Newland. She was the widow of Joe S. Grimes, a member of Stanford Christian Church and many civic organizations.

Survivors include three sons, Joe S. Grimes Jr. of Louisville, Richard N. Grimes and William T. Grimes, both of Stanford; a daughter, Susanne Frank of Ojai, Calif.; a sister, Nancy McCarty of Winston-Salem, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Born March 12, 1957, in Ashland, she was the daughter of the late Dan Abrams Jr. and Louise Amos Abrams Jobe. She was teacher in Lincoln County and a member of Pentecostal Holiness Church where she taught Sunday school and was church treasurer. She was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Gross; two sons, Thomas P. Edwards IV of Danville and Jerry "Danny" Gross of Crab Orchard; a daughter, Amy Gross of Lexington; and a sister, Jo Ann Maynard of Catlettsburg.

Born Nov. 24, 1959, in Hamilton County, Ohio, he was the son of the late Jess Raymond and Annetta Mae Brooks Hamilton.

HAMMONS, Ronald E., 73, Lexington and Okeechobee, FL, formerly of Richmond, KY, husband of Anna Margaret Rhodus Hammons, passed away Sat., July 2, 2005 at the Hospice Care Center. He retired as Senior Contracts Administrator for IBM. Born in Independence, KY, he was a son of the late William Virgil and Vivian Shotwell Hammons Sr. He was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Born May 27, 1935, in Clay County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Mabel Vaughn Saunders. She was a member of Watts Chapel Baptist Church and Gwinn Island Social Club. She was a retired employee of Kahns Food Co. in Cincinnati.

CRAB ORCHARD - George C. Hawkins Sr., 87, of Crab Orchard died Tuesday at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.

Born July 8, 1916, in George's Fork, Va., he was the son of the late John H. and Bessie G. Lane Hawkins. He was a retied sawmill operator and co-owner of Hawkins Brothers Sawmill. He also had been a welder, and is a Navy veteran and the widower of Zula Weaver Hawkins. He had been a member of Crab Orchard Lodge F&AM since 1949.

Survivors include two daughters, Sarah E. Brown of Harrodsburg, and Linda M. Rose-Hoagland of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; four sons, George C. Hawkins Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., Royce B. Hawkins of Yosemite, Jonathan Hawkins of Winchester and William David Hawkins of Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters, Thetta Denny of Crab Orchard, Clara J. Cantrell of Shelby Gap, and Lorett Conners of Stanford; four brothers, Delbert and Felmer Hawkins, both of Crab Orchard, Elmer Hawkins of Hope, Ind., and David S. Born May 1, 1910, in Stanford, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Rebecca Field and the widow of A.T. Hunn.

She was a Sunday school teacher and treasurer of First Baptist Church in Turnersville. She graduated from Bate School and was a member of the Cemetery Club and the Busy Sunshine Club. She worked at the Tobacco Company in Danville and Lexington.

Survivors include three sons, Donald Hunn of Lexington, Donnie Hunn of Danville, and Chris Hunn of Turnersville.

Pallbearers will be Clifford Napier II, Steve Goodman, Dallas McCowan, Ricky Alcorn, Wilmur Meleindez and Clarence Gooch.

MORELAND - Services for Herlin G. Jeffries, 89, of Moreland, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Hope Baptist Church by David Fralix. Burial will be in Hustonville Cemetery with military rites by Boyle Post 46, American Legion.

Born Dec. 12, 1915, in Casey County, he was the son of the late C.T. and Wavie True Jeffries. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran and a Purple Heart recipient, wounded in France in World War II, where he served as a medic.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Rogers Jeffries; a son, Marvin Jeffries of Lexington; three daughters, Joyce Woodward of Moreland and Marlene Ogleand and Carlene Golub, both of Florida; two brothers, Fred Jeffries of Erlanger and Charles Jeffries of Michigan; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Jean Jeffries.

CRAB ORCHARD - June Greer Lancaster, 81, of Stanford, died Sunday at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born July 3, 1924, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Daisy Wolfe Greer. She was a former employee of Cowden Manufacturing Co. and a caregiver for the elderly. She was the widow of Willie J. Lancaster.

Survivors include a son, Dale Lancaster of Stanford; two sisters, Amy L. Newcomb of Hustonville and Gertie Buchanan of Salem, Ind.; and a granddaughter.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Broughtontown by Tony Stevens. No visitation is planned.

Born March 10, 1928, in Green County, she was the daughter of the late Fielding Lively and Amanda Whitlow Graham. She was a member of New Beginnings United Methodist Church, Lincoln County Homemakers and the state association of licensed practical nurses.
