He was a Captain in the Federal Army, he was killed in action in a Louisville, Ky battle. It is thought that William Henry Hines was the only member of his family to fight for the Union. he was considered a traitor and disowned by his family. When he was killed he was brought home and placed on his mother's -OR- step-mother's lawn and there he laid for 3 days because his family would NOT claim him and they had disowned him. Finally a few of his friends came along and buried him. William Henry Hines first served in Company B of the 17th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry but was discharged after one year due to poor health. He rejoined a year later under the 12th Kentucky Calvary and became a First Lieutenant. Ohio County Kentucky Records Vol 1&2 indicate that W. H. Hines had died and a guardian bond was posted, September 1866. ADDITIONAL NOTES: JOHN WILL ( or Walton ) HINES, the oldest son of WILLIAM HENRY HINES and after the death of his father. John W. HINES supported the family. He worked as a day labor on the farm and carried the mail from Hartford to Cloveport located on the Ohio River, and between Hartford and Point Pleasant. After JOHN W. HINES married, he bought 100 acres of farm land which he sold five years later. He then bought 199 acres in Ohio County. His farm, of which 65 acres were fenced and cultivated, was said to be one of the best in the county. JOHN W. HINES was a member of the Baptist Chruch, a successful and respected man of the community. According to Ohio Co., Ky 1880 cenusu, Rockport District Vol 23, Ed 180, Sht 18, Line 47: "John W. Hines was listed with his wife, their two children, his younger sister, Martha Lee Hines-Brown, widow and her two children."
