Logan County, KY, Order Book 4 May 1806 – December 1807 Notes This book has the first 4 pages missing. The original index lists Samuel Morris on page 2, William Johns and West Maulding on page 4. P. 4, May 1806, Aquilla, a Negro, is charged with “burglariously and with felonious intent” entering Joseph Anderson’s house. He was found not guilty. P. 8, July 1806, Horatio Merry is declared an honest man of good demeanor. One reference in this book then goes on to say that the person referred to is allowed to practice law until he can receive his license. Perhaps all the previous ones are also in this category. P. 16, James D. Offutt is paid $24.00 for building the public stocks. P. 18, Samuel Caldwell wins a case vs Israel McGready and McGready does have to pay $10.00 in a tax dispute from 1801. P. 19, August 1806, John Curd is appointed jailer on one day of court and the next day the order is rescinded and Issac Lewis is reappointed jailer. The jail is to be inspected monthly by assigned justices. Court adjourned to the office of the clerk. Sheriff was fined for being absent from court. P. 21, Kennedy’s Sugar Camp is often mentioned as a place name. P. 29, a new jail is to be built and a levy will be passed at next court to pay for same. A committee is to purchase a spot of ground for the jail and employ workmen to build a good and sufficient jail. P. 38, Oct 1806, Loch Phipps and John Gott are undertakers for public buildings. Payment for 22 wolf scalps is recorded, mostly young ones. Levy was set at 75 cents and no more. Aaron Lewis is to hold the key to courthouse and to open the door whenever called upon to do so. West Maulding is paid for supplying lumber for the courthouse. Isaac Lewis is fined for contempt of court. P. 46, Sulfolk is mentioned as a nearby town that we can no longer identify. Nathan Chambers has John Harris assigned to him as apprentice to learn the trade of “sciolus or saolus”. Does anyone know what Nathan did? The writing is totally illegible to us. P. 63, Feb 1807, Robert Fergerson is fined $20.00 for vandalism and breaking the glass out of the courthouse windows. P. 63, the tavern rates are now listed in columns of “D C M.” Dollars, cents, and ???? Help anyone! P. 73, April 1807, John P. Oldham is appointed to arrange to fill the sink in front of the courthouse. On page 77, he is appointed keeper of the courthouse. P. 77, The sheriff is to furnish 2 locks to the jury room. P. 83, July 1807, Wiley J. Barner, sheriff, is fined for contempt of court. On p. 85, he complains that the jail is insufficient and not strong enough to keep in either criminals or debtors. P. 86, William W. Whitaker and James Stephenson are recommended to governor as capable of filling office of coroner, the first time this office is mentioned. P. 92, August 1807, the Logan County patrollers are mentioned several times. P. 100, West Maulding and Aaron Lewis are assigned to lay off the prison bounds. Many entries in this section of the order book are assigning road overseers and listing the people who are to supply hands to help maintain these roads. P. 120, Oct 1807, William W. Whitaker and William Whitsett are to arrange for the building of an office for the clerk by fixing the ground, planning the office, and obtaining funds by helping set the next levy. Later, on page 128, Samuel Caldwell is paid $75.00 for rent due him as he supplied the clerk’s office in 1799-1800. P. 127, 29 young wolf scalps and 13 grown wolf scalps are paid for by county funds. P. 135, Dec 1807, Fidelo Sharp is listed as honest and he can practice law until he procures a license. P. 182-4, July 1808, John Evans is accused of being stealing a horse from William Forsythe. P. 191, Aug 1808, Henry Wigle is found guilty of stealing leather and escaped to Robertson Co., TN. P. 201, Sept 1808, Wiley J. Barner, sheriff, is fined for not attending court. P. 205, Oct 1808, William F. Campbell, jailer, is to take care of courthouse. Charles Spencer is charged with fight but got stabbed by Robert McCabe. P. 205, McCabe is judged not quilty. P. 214, Nov 1808, “-- time of present sheriff will expire in Feb next, it is ordered that Peyton Nowlin esquire and Matthew Kuykendall esq. be recommended to the Governor and Senate as proper persons to fill that office being the oldest acting Justices of this county in regular rotation. A majority of all the Justices of the peace for this county being present and concurring in this nomination.” P. 242, Aug 1809, dower rights are assigned Susanna Hughs following the death of husband, Rowland Hughs or Hughes. The spelling changes often. P. 257, June 1809, the report on the prison bounds being laid off is given and approved but the bounds are not listed. The order to alter the bounds was on page 254. P. 258, John C. Slocumb, Methodist Episcopal Church, is granted license to perform rites of matrimony. Frederick Stiers also receives license but denomination is not listed.
