Local Resident, Mahala Prater Dies Sept. 28

Mrs. Mahala Prater, 72, died in a local hospital Tuesday, September 28, following a long illness.  Her death was attributed to a stroke. Born  July 24, 1882 in Magoffin county, she was the daughter of the late John and Sarah Crace Adams.  She had been a resident of Paintsville for the past 43 years. Mrs. Prater was also a member of the Methodist church. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Wilbur Prater. She is survived by two sons, Paul Prater, city and Ernest Prater, Springfield, O.  Also surviving are four brothers, John T. Adams, William Adams, Ben Whitt, Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Walter Whitt, Williamson, W. Va. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the Third Street Freewill Baptist Church with the Revs. Claude Preston, Homer Willis and W. F. Pettus officiating. Burial was made in the Gardner cemetery to Salyersville under the direction of the Jones and Preston Funeral Home.

Paul M. Prater, 77, died Thursday, October 26, 1989, in Paul B. Medical Center.  Mr. Prater was born March 10, 1912 in Johnson County, the son of Wilbur and Mahala Adams Prater. He was retired from Maggard and Joseph.  Surviving are his wife, Pinkie Marie Picklesimer Prater; one son, Paul M. Prater II, of Ivel; three daughters, Linda Dyer, of Paintsville, Mary VanHoose, of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Sharon Conley, of Oil Springs; one brother, Ernest Prater, of Cleveland, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, October 29, in Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Lowell Webb officiating.  Burial was in Mayo Memorial Cemetery in Paintsville. Pallbearers were John David VanHoose, Larry Conley, Greg Conley, Steven Conley, Tim Dyer, and Rusty Preston.
