Albert Sidney Johnston was born in Washington, Kentucky,
February 2, 1803. In 1826, Johnston graduated from the
U.S. Military Academy. He served in the Black Hawk War
and later migrated to the Republic of Texas where he was
a general of the Texas Army and secretary of war.
Johnston also served in the Mexican War, after which he
reentered the regular army of the U.S. In 1855, he
received the command of the elite 2nd Cavalry Regiment
with a promotion to rank of colonel. Two years later, he
commanded the expedition to quell the Mormon rebellion
in Utah Territory and was thereafter promoted to brevet
brigadier general. Johnston became commander of the
Department of the Pacific in 1860, then reluctantly
joined the Confederacy after his adopted state of Texas
seceded in 1861. His former classmate, Jefferson Davis,
appointed him commander of the western theatre of
operations. Johnston was killed at the Battle of Shiloh
after commanding a surprise attack on Gen. Ulysses S.
Grant's forces in April, 1862. He was buried first at
New Orleans, then in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.

This collection consists of a certificate of payment,
certificates of purchase, receipts, a land grant, and
indentures of Simon Kenton. The certificate of payment,
dated Aug. 10, 1787, was signed by Isaac Shelby of the
District of Kentucky authorizing Kenton's pay for
services as captain in the Shawnee Expedition under Col.
Benjamin Logan. The six Register's Office certificates
of purchase were for land bought in Kentucky by Kenton
in 1804 and 1805. A document signed by Gov. James
Garrard of Kentucky May 18, 1800, verifies Simon
Kenton's grant of land in Mason County, Oct. 19, 1780.
One indenture between Kenton and John Caldwell
transferred land in Mercer County, Kentucky, to Caldwell
on Dec. 6, 1794. Another indenture, dated Aug. 29, 1818,
transferred land in Bath County, Kentucky, from Kenton
to Andrew Kinkead. An indenture for land in Mercer
County, Kentucky, was made between Simon Kenton and
Charlotte and Alexander Walker, Sally and Greenberry
McGinnis, and Jenny and John Wright, Apr. 21, 1824. A
copy of the Apr. 29, 1802 indenture between John and
Elizabeth Kinkead and Simon Kenton for land in Mason
County, Kentucky, was made Mar. 29, 1865. Also in this
collection are photographs, shot in Maysville, Kentucky,
Sept. 1, 1939, of two documents: one receipt of payment
by Thomas Marshall, July 1, 1791 for scouting up the
Ohio River and the other, a copy of the marriage bond of
Kenton and his second wife, Elizabeth Garboe (Jarboe)
                      March 27, 1798.
                   Available on microfilm, Clift no. 513;
This collection may be protected from unauthorized copying
by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17,
                      United States Code).
Simon Kenton, a pioneer settler of Kentucky, was born in
Fauquier County, Virginia, April 3, 1755. In the spring
of 1775, Kenton and Thomas Williams explored the area of
Mason County, Kentucky, where they set up camp. Kenton
moved on to Boonesborough in the fall of that year and
became a famous scout and Indian fighter. Shortly after
his first wife's death, Kenton married Elizabeth Jarboe
in 1798. That same year, Kenton moved to Ohio where he
spent the rest of his life, mostly in poverty. He
managed his finances badly, lost large amounts of land,
and was even briefly imprisoned for debt while on a
visit to Washington, Kentucky, in 1820. Kenton died near
                      Zanesville, Ohio, April 29, 1836.

This two item collection consists of a September 10, 1855,
letter and an [1884?] letter written by Christopher
Columbus Graham. The first letter was written to an
unknown individual. It discusses a tract of land Graham
wished to purchase on the Rockcastle River. The second
item was written to John Procter. This letter discusses
a donation of fossilized bones from Big Bone Lick,
Kentucky. Graham details his travels, including a
survey expedition for the 'Texas and Pacific Railroad',
and being 'mess mates' with Ulysses S. Grant during the
Blackhawk War of 1832. Provenance information for the
fossilized bones is provided in this letter.

Christopher Columbus Graham was born in 1784, near
Danville, Kentucky. He was involved in several military
expeditions including the War of 1812, the Blackhawk
War, and the Mexican War. He graduated from
Transylvania University with a degree in medicine after
the Mexican War. He served as a surgeon on Colonel
Gray's expedition to survey land for the Southern,
Atlantic, and Pacific Railroad. During his life, he was
devoted to collecting items to perserve the natural
history of Kentucky. Graham was widely known as a
physician, hunter, explorer, surveyor, soldier, and
author. He died in 1884. John Robert Procter was born
in Mason County, Kentucky, on March 16, 1844. He was
educated at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard.
He became Kentucky state geologist and Commissioner of
Immigration in 1880. In 1892, Procter was dismissed
from his position by Governor John Young Brown. In
1893, President Grover Cleveland appointed Procter to
head the U.S. Civil Service Commission. He served in
this capacity until his death in 1903. Fifteen to twenty
thousand years ago, a great ice sheet covered an area
from northern Canada to the Ohio River. South of this
sheet, wooly mammoths, mastodons, giant ground sloths,
and giant bison came to a salt lick in Boone County,
Kentucky. This sight has become known as Big Bone Lick,
Kentucky. Many of the animals became trapped in the
boggs and died, their bones buried and perserved.
French Captian Charles Lemoye de Longueil collected some
of these fossils and sent them to King Louis XV of
France. Benjamin Franklin studied some of the bones and
concluded elphants used to live in America. In 1807,
William Clark excavated bones for scientific study.
These specimens made their way to museums around the
                      world.

These are the papers of Valentine Peers, a businessman and
local judge in Kentucky in the early nineteenth century,
and his family. The papers largely consist of business
correspondence, much of which concerns the Lexington and
Maysville turnpike company. Also present are land papers
and documents on salt making and salt sales. There are
some personal letters to Peers and members of his
family, particularly a number of letters from Eliza
Powell, Peers' sister. The group includes Peers' letter
copybook, dating from 1813 to 1815 which also listed the
estate property of Mrs. Hebe Carter. A cash book and
associated receipts, dating from 1819 to 1822, concern
transactions of Peers' Maysville factory. There are also
some letters from Mrs. Henry Waller, granddaughter of
Lewis Collins and great-granddaughter of Valentine
Peers, written in 1947 about the donation of Peers
materials to the Kentucky Historical Society.

Peers was born in Ireland in 1756. He immigrated first to
Scotland, then to Loudoun County, Virginia in 1773. He
planned to be a linen merchant but instead entered
military service on the American side in the
Revolutionary War. He rose to the rank of Brigade Major
before leaving the army in November, 1777, to pursue his
business interests. Peers married Eleanor Orr in 1791.
He and his wife lived in Loudoun and Prince William
counties in Virginia until 1803 when they moved to Lower
Blue Licks in Nicholas County, Kentucky. Major Peers was
involved in the manufacture of salt there for five
years. He also opened cotton factories in Paris and
Maysville. Peers later moved his family to Paris and
became a judge of the Court of Quarter Sessions there,
circa 1808 to 1812. His later business interests
included insurance subscriptions, land investments, and
selling stock in the Lexington and Maysville Turnpike
Road Company, which was incorporated in 1817. Peers
moved to Maysville in 1819 and remained there until his
death. He served as a ruling elder of the Presbyterian
Church in Maysville for the last ten years of his life.

Author: Jessup, Thomas S.

Title: General Thomas S. Jessup papers, 1840-1860.

Primary Material: Mixed Material

Subject(s): Jessup, Thomas S.--Correspondence.
                   Jessup, Samuel B.--Correspondence.
Underwood, Joseph R. (Joseph Rogers), 1791-1876.
                   Generals--United States--Correspondence.
                   Florida--Appropriations and expenditures--19th century.

Description: 1 folder.
                   Chronological order maintained.

Notes: Access at KHS only.
This group centers around a letter by General Thomas S.
Jessup to his brother, Colonel Samuel B. Jessup, dated
August 19, 1840. The letter in question concerns a
speech by Joseph Rogers Underwood on a Florida
appropriation bill. Thomas Jessup, in Washington, D.C.,
was forwarding a copy of the speech to Samuel in
Frankfort for publication in Frankfort and Lexington
newspapers. A copy of the speech is no longer with this
letter. The collection also has a 1913 letter written to
Elizabeth Tandy of Paducah, from an aunt (identified
only as 'Annie') in Fort Smith, Arkansas. This letter
forwarded the 1840 letter to Tandy, who was a descendant
of Samuel Jessup. Tandy's aunt provided some identifying
family information in relation to the old letter and
discussed social news. Some notes about the provenance
of these items are also present.
                   Available on microfilm, Clift no. 0483;
This collection may be protected from unauthorized copying
by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17,
                      United States Code).
Jessup, a native of Pennsylvania, emigrated to Kentucky
circa 1800 and settled in Mason County. After a brief
stint as a store clerk in Maysville, Jessup entered the
army as a second lieutenant in 1808. Ten years later, he
had risen to the rank of brigadier general and service
as Quartermaster General. He continued with that rank
and position until his death in 1860. His brother,
Samuel Jessup, was a member of the Kentucky state
                      Senate.

Simon Kenton, an explorer in the late eighteenth century,
was believed to be one of the first permanent settlers
in Mason County. He had close ties to both Daniel Boone
and George Rogers Clark. He built a station on the
Lawrence Creek in Mason County in 1784 to welcome weary
travelers and stayed there until 1789 when he and his
family moved to Ohio. While there, he became penniless
and went to prison for debt in 1820 for one year. Kenton
died in 1836 and was buried in Ohio

This is a deed of emancipation given by C.B. Shepard for
his slave Nancy Glaswell (or Glasswell), February 8,
1826, for the sum of $350. Shepard, of Lewis County,
restored Glaswell 'to that freedom which is the natural
gift and birthright of every human being.' The document
was attested by Lewis Collins and A.M. January. Two
notes on the reverse recorded the deed in Mason County
Court by its clerk, Marshall Key, and recognized
Glaswell's freedom. She was described as having 'a light
yellow complexion,' being aged about thirty years, and
standing five feet high. The clerk's notes identified
                      Shepard as Chauncy B. Shepard.

These are papers and records of General Henry Lee, an early
settler of Mason County, Kentucky. The collection
contains a 1794 letter to Lee by a man named Orr,
concerning business matters and politics and an 1832
letter to Lee from his son, Richard Henry Lee, then a
member of the Kentucky House of Representatives. The
younger Lee gave an account of the nomination of Henry
Clay for President by the General Assembly, described

Henry Lee, a native of Virginia, began his career as a
surveyor and farmer. After moving to Kentucky, he
represented the area in the Virginia legislature, and
served as a delegate to the Virginia convention, which
ratified the federal constitution. Lee also served as a
delegate in the 1787 Kentucky statehood convention. As a
general in the Kentucky militia, Lee commanded units in
Kentucky north of the Licking River. Lee later served as
a judge of the Court of Quarter Sessions and the Mason
County Circuit Court. He also became president of the
Washington Branch of the Bank of Kentucky.

Description: 1 item.

Notes: Access at KHS only.
This seven-and-a-half-page deposition was taken at the
house of Hugh Power in Adams County, Ohio, on August 17,
1811. It concerns a Kentucky land claim for which Simon
Kenton was providing evidence. The case was brought to
the Mason County, Kentucky, Circuit Court with John
Williams as complainant and John Kerchival as defendant.
The document's format consists of questions posed by
both the complainant and the defendant with Kenton's
answers listed afterward. Kenton states that he came to
Kentucky in 1775 and soon after 'he became acquainted
with the leading roads then traveled by Buffalo and
Indians ...' He mostly describes his activities in 1779
and 1780, including conducting surveys for the Marshall
family. He also mentions Daniel Boone, John Logan,
Robert Patterson, and others with whom he traveled
throughout Kentucky. This document contains two of his
                      signatures.

by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17,
                      United States Code).
