OLDTIME RIVER MAN IS DEAD
Capt. Joseph N. Smith
Succumbs, to Long Illness
Captain Joseph N. Smith, 66 years old, a prominent river man died yesterday
morning at his home, 1612 Broad street after an illness of several weeks.
For the past 54 years, Captain Smith has been a resident of Paducah,
and for 36 years he was a pilot on the Ohio, Tennessee and Mississippi
rivers. At the time of his death, he had the distinction of being the oldest
river man on the Ohio and Tennessee rivers, and has for the past 28 years
been in the Tennessee River Packet company, Ayer Lord Tie company, Indiana
Tie company, Hoagland Barge Line, and Arrow Transportation Line.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. H.J. McFaul,
of Pittsburg, Pa., Mrs. Henry Rhodes, Paducah, Mrs. R.E. King, of Norfolk,
Va., and seven sons, Dennis, Henry, Rodney, Rillie, Melvin, Everett, all
of this city and Nelson Smith of Cleveland, Ohio.
No funeral arrangements have been made, pending the arrival of relatives
