A Day In Paducah

~A Cold Day In February 1932~

My Dad told me it was a cold Saturday morning in February on Second Street by the market house in Paducah. He and Uncle Reble were walking and looking in the store windows and trying to keep warm while Mom and Aunt Nettie were doing what women do when they get to look and pretend to shop, of course there was no buying because no one had any money after the Stock Market crash in October of '29. The two men would browse a store until they started to get hard looks for not buying anything and would move on to another just soak up some heat. Dad said he figured the girls were doing the same.

They met a while later and as they were making plans, the girls said they would like to get a cup of coffee and get warm and the go on home. The two couples went to a Paducah landmark for years. Moonies Café. Dad told me they all had a cup of coffee and after sitting a while decided to have a bowl of Moonies’ famous beef stew. After eating their meal Dad told them He would pay the bill. Dad told me the total bill came to twenty-eight cents! That’s right $0.28 CENTS. Unbelievable isn’t it?
