The Trice Family in
Early Kentucky
(Cumberland/Monroe Co.)

Tandy H. Trice, born 1771 in Virginia, was the son of William Trice, born about 1730 and died October 14, 1775. He married Mary (Mollie) Rice on December 17, 1768 in Goochland County, Virginia. Mary was born in 1746 and died in 1788. They also had a daughter Frances (Frankey) Trice, born about 1769, married John Seargent, born about 1763. In Mary’s will (Abstracts of Louisa County, Virginia Will Books 1743-1801 – Will Book 3, page 195) she stated that Tandy 1771 be put in a good home until well educated.
William (1730) had been married previously to Elizabeth McGehee and they had 2 sons, William born about 1759 and James Sr. born in 1762. William and James were half brothers to Tandy (1771) and Frankey (1769). Both boys were mentioned in their grandfather, Samuel McGehee, will. (Louisa County, Virginia Book of Chancery Orders 1790-1797, page 118)
Tandy (1771) married Martha Patsey Spencer, the daughter of Samuel and Sally Spencer who also had Elizabeth “Betsy”, William T. John, Lucy, Judith and Thomas.
Tandy and Martha Patsey were married in Buckingham, Virginia about 1794. With likely 8 children they migrated to Cumberland County, Kentucky in 1812. This was during the Revolutionary War. Their migration was influenced probably by the war.
Tandy and Martha Patsey lived in Kentucky where Tandy died without a will in Cumberland County. He died on October 17, 1815 before his last son, John, was born February 15, 1816. Patsey and Tandy (1771) had the following children: William, Polly, Nancy, Tandy H. (1805) Martha, Samuel, John, Elizabeth “Eliza”, Pamelia and Paulina.
The Honorable County Court of Cumberland oversaw the settlement of Tandy’s (1771) estate. Patsey Trice and Samuel Wilson were Administrators and Samuel Wilson was appointed Guardian for the Heirs of Tandy Trice. Appointed by the court, James McColgan, Abraham Engart and Joseph H. Tobin oversaw the division of property and final accounting of the estate.
All information on final accounting of the estate of Tandy H. Trice (1771) is found in Will Book B, pages 139, 140, 141, 142, 143, 144 and 145 located in the State Archives Library of Kentucky at Frankfort.
In the 3 years Tandy (1771) lived in Kentucky he accumulated, including Patsey’s dowery, 300 acres of land between the Cumberland River and old Ridge Road and 40 acres across the Cumberland River. Tandy (1771) had a tavern, still, ferry boat and most likely 10 to 15 slaves. Patsey rented out the land and slaves during the 5 years required to settle the estate.

This land is on Original Certificate No. 2112 dated 5 September 1798.

The following court action took place after Tandy 1771 moved to Kentucky, settling property in Virginia on Patsey’s dowery.

EVERYTHING WAS FINALIZED FOR TANDY H. TRICE (1771) ESTATE In 1820.

THE HEIRS:

Polly Trice – born 1800 in Virginia and death unknown. She married Henry Hall. They had migrated to Tennessee by 1820.

Nancy Trice – born 1802 in Virginia and died 1851. She married John Cloyd. They migrated to Illinois and settled in Tennessee.

William C. Trice – shown on the 1820 Federal Census and there are no other hard sources as to his fate.

Tandy H. Trice – born 1805 in Virginia and died 1882-1883 in Missouri. Tandy married Mary Gates. They left Cumberland, Kentucky in the late 1830’s for Warren County, Illinois and finally settled in Anabel, Macon County, Missouri.

Martha Holman Trice – born 1808 in Virginia and death unknown. She married John Norwood Gates and migrated to Tennessee.

Samuel Spencer Trice – born 1812 in Virginia and died about 1877. Married 1st Lucy Bland and 2nd Frances Minor. He migrated to Clinton, Missouri in the 1840’s.
John H. Trice – born 1816 and died about 1880. John married 1st Permelia (Unknown) and 2nd Eliza J. (Unknown). He migrated to Clinton, Missouri.

Elizabeth “Eliza” Frances Trice – dates of birth and death are unknown. She married David Biggerstaff in Kentucky and they migrated to Celine, Tennessee.

Pamelia Trice – dates of birth and death are unknown. She married Jery Black. He dropped out of the Census in 1830. Final fate of this family unknown.

Paulina Trice – dates of birth and death are unknown. Her history is unknown.

The irony of this history is that by the middle of the 1840’s probably all of this family had left Kentucky and they didn’t migrate together. There could be a sprinkling of descendants left in Kentucky but unless they are looking they will never be found. There is substantial genealogy on the families that left. From a genealogy aspect, one of the more important finds is in the Probate on page 107 of Deed Book D, Cumberland County, Kentucky. The reference to the grave yard (not yet identified) most likely is where Tandy (1771) and Martha Patsey 1780 were buried. It may be that the only two of them was buried there as it appears to be on their property or adjacent to it.

Hopefully, this history will be continued someday.
