A Brief History of the Civil War in Monroe Co

Monroe County strongly supported the Union during the War Between the States, I beleive more men served in the Union army than in any other county in Kentucky, I beleive I read there were over 800 men who joined the Union army from Monroe County. The few men who enlisted in the Confederate army were from the Southern sympathetic areas that bordered the Cumberland River in eastern Monroe County, in the Vernon, Turkey Neck Bend and Center Point areas. Most of the men who joined the Union army were either in the 9th Ky Infantry, which John Fraim of the Flippin area was most responsible for recruiting, the 37th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, which was organized in Glasgow, Barren County, Ky. in 1863 and the 5th Kentucky, which was made up primarily of Cumberland, and Monroe County boys. From official reports I could send you breif histories of these regiments from the Official Records and you may use them. To tell you breifly the 9th Ky Infantry saw battle at Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga among many other places. The 5th Ky Cav operated at first mainly in Tennessee and Kentucky, later they were with Sherman and his march up thru the Carolinas. The 37th Ky. was organized in Glasgow at Fort Williams in 1863, a fort constructed there to show a strong presence in an area that had a lot of Southern sympathizers. The 37th Ky Cav were among other units used in chasing Morgan's Raiders through out Kentucky.

BAILEY CEMERTY
On Hwy 216 in the Hestand area

*Deputy Sheriff of Monroe County in 1861-1862, elected Sheriff in 1862 served through the Civil War, was a strong union man.

BAXTER CEMETERY
Located in the Hestand community off Hwy 163 just to the south from the post office.

BEAUTIFUL HOME CHURCH CEMETERY
On Beautiful Home Church Road near Gamaliel

*Captured at Lafayette, GA in 1864, sent to Andersonville Prison in GA. Released and paroled at Vicksburg. Survived the sinking of the Sultana on the Mississippi River Near Memphis on April 27, 1865. Mustered out in OH in May 1865.

Kettle Creek area, this cemetery as of late has been used as a hog lot. Confederate guerillas, Biil Ashlock and Beanie Short were buried here after being killed by a group of men headed by Shangahi Cloyd.

On Henson Road in the Hestand area, nearby was the skirmish at Moores Farm on June 6, 1862 between O.P. hamilton's confederate partisan rangers and the Co I of the 9th Pa Cav.

*Killed at Franklin, Tennessee while commanding company of Confederate cavalry Dec. 12, 1862.

Across the road (Mill Creek Rd) from Mill Creek Church and the entrance to Tompkinsville Park. Noth about a quarter f a mile was the site of a Civil War Skirmish involving Margan's Cavalry and the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry on July 9, 1862.

*Killed at Stones River, Tennessee on Jan 1 or 2, 1863, age 37 years.

MILL CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY
Mill Creek Road near the entrance to the Tompkinsville Park and across the road from Liberty Church Cemetery. Just to the north of these churches along Mill Creek Road is the site of a Civil War Skirmish when in July 9, 1862 Morgan's Cavalry defeated a detachment of Union Cavalry.
