William HARRELL owned land in Nelson County from 1796 - 1802 on which his son, Chester HARRELL, lived. It appears that Chester married twice, with the first marriage possibly to an Everett. The second marriage was in Bardstown on June 1, 1787, to Betsy STEPHENS daughter of Mary Cases or Gates. The Chester Harrells moved briefly to Preble County Ohio, before locating permanently in what became Franklin County, IN. Chester was listed there as early as 1808 in tax lists and as late as 1820 in the census. Will exchange info on Chester or other Harrells.

1. I am seeking to locate long lost relatives who were born, probably married and are likely buried in Nelson Co. I have family bible information that is said to be accurate but my recent work at the Library of Congress in D.C, while enjoyable and enlightening was fruitless. I can provide lists of complete names and dates from the mid-late 1800s but am unable to find references anywhere on this line.
2. I ran upon a citation from one Mrs. Evelyn Crady Adams from the Kentucky Historical Society with a publication date of 1988. As you will see from my name below, this is a most interesting find for me personally. As appropriate, please forward my name and phone number to the above Mrs Adams with my hope we can make at least phone contact.
3. Any advice, guidance, counsel or warnings you can provide in my efforts are most appreaciated. Thank you in advance for your help.

We are looking for any information on the husband of RUTH WALKER. She was born in Prince Geo. Co., Maryland abt. 1770. Old family letters state that she was married to a 1st or 2nd cousin named CHARLES WALKER.(possibly) They (may) have been married in Penn. and moved at some point to Nelson Co. Ky. where the husband was frozen to death in a snowstorm abt. 1808-1810. (His last child , Harriet, was born abt. 1808 and he is not shown on the 1810 census, so it's logical.) He was a trader/salesman. Their daughter Harriet's spouse was named Isaac G.Lineback. Ruth Walker died abt. 1842 in Louisville. Ruth's parents were GIDEON WALKER & PRISCILLA DUVALL. THANK YOU for any help! This husband is a crucial name to find for us. The husband's last name IS Walker. The 1st name is questionable.

GRAHAM - Interested in John GRAHAM who died in 1798 in Washington Co., Ky. Am particularly interested in locating descendants of his son, John Jr. who was living in Wayne Co., Ky. in 1814. John Jr. apparently married Mrs. Catherine (LANE) JONES in Washington Co. in 1806. Did they leave descendants? Also, interested in identifying the wife/wives of John GRAHAM Sr. His widow was named Mary, but she may have been a second wife? One tradition says John's wife was Nancy WATSON. John Graham came to Nelson Co., Ky. in 1787 from Bullpasture, Augusta Co., Va.

JACKSON - Interested in John JACKSON who settled on Hardin's Creek (Nelson Co., later Washington County) in 1779 and had a large family. John died in March 1814. Does anyone have evidence if he was a brother of William JACKSON who settled on Cartwright's Creek in the 1780's. The records show them associating with the same people, but I have not found much showing direct association. Also, does anyone descend from John's son, John Junior, who married Winnie STACY in Green Co., Ky. in 1801? Or from John's son William JACKSON who married Anne MARPLE in 1802 in Washington County?

Writer's wife Judith Grace LEONARD Clayton seeks information on her grandfather JOHN JOSEPH LEONARD. Looking for ANYTHING on John Joseph Leonard, born 1878 in Nelson County in Bardstown, KY. He was an itinerant printer and "type setter." In his teens worked around newspaper offices in Louisville. Joined the Army for the Spanish American War. (All this in his own words). He married widow Martha Anne Garris Robertson in Great Falls, SC about 1906. Unknown how he came to SC...possibly after the War. Told Martha Anne Garris Robertson that his mother and father had been a vaudeville act, essentially dancers. Riverboat people on the Mississippi River. He was somehow orphaned and was raised by his grandmother in Bardstown...she was a Shelton or Sheldon. He had a twin brother. We have researched Bardstown and have found nothing. He has thus far escaped us in Louisville as well. Nothing on his Spanish American War record either. His record should reveal that he lived around Bardstown until at least his teen years. Then to Louisville until the Spanish American War. He and Martha Garris Robertson Leonard had one son, Richard Louis Leonard, Sr. born in 1908 in Great Falls, SC. John Joseph Leonard died in 1947 in Kannapolis, NC.

Seeking the origins of gggg-grandfather Greenbery/Greenbury/ Greenberry GRIFFIN/GRIFFEN. It's Greenbery GRIFFIN in the family Bible, born circa 1774/75, married to Nancy. I first find him and his family in the 1830 Daviess Co., KY census, already about 56 years old. Would like to know where they came from and when they arrived in Daviess Co. (obviously it's between 1820 and 1830). FTM CD-#312 shows a tax record index listing for a Greenbury GRIFFIN in Nelson Co. in 1800. If you have any info on the GRIFFIN/GRIFFEN surname in Nelson Co. or info on obtaining copies of tax records in 1800 from there, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

I am looking for information on my maternal grandmother's father, George Edward Duncan. I have very little information on her side the family. I know he died when she was young (probably around early 1920's). She had told me he was born in Nelson County in the late 1800's. Any information I could have about him or who his parents may be would be wonderful. I did see that there were several Duncans in Nelson County during the 1830 census. I am hoping maybe several generations lived in Nelson County. Any info would be more than I have now.

Elizabeth Hopewell Shercliff 26 jy, 1791 Anne Spaulding - m. Edward Spaulding sometime before 1763 Mary Anne Dant Mary Mills m. Justinian Mills in 1751 Charles Joseph Francis Xavior, incorrectly called Joseph Francis Excol in the Calendar of Wills. Wife: Eleanor (Nevit?) ---------------- Joseph Francis Xavior (my ancestor) m. Martha Shercliff sometime before 1791 His children: Thomas - m. Martha B. Outterridge William - m. Susan Fenwick in 1814 (my ancestor) Mary - b 14 June, 1798 m Samuel Willett 18 March 1818 d. 29 December, 1875 in Kentucky She was married in Bardstown, Ky - at that time her parents were dead Joseph Francis - maybe b 1799; baptized at Georgetown, Md (now DC) in 1800. ----------------- Question 1: Does anyone have any information about Joseph Francis Xavior Dant or Martha Shercliff Dant, his wife? I know her father was Thomas Shercliff, St. Charles Co., but do not have either a birth or a death date for either person. I have seen him referred to as Joseph and as Joseph Francis. ---------------- Question 2: Has anyone seen baptismal records for Eliza Ann Dant and/or Mary Dant, of Thomas and Martha? Thomas apparently had 8 children, the youngest appearing only in the Trinity Church (Georgetown) baptismal records, hence probably died in infancy. All other children were born/baptized in Georgetown, except two daughters: Eliza Ann and Mary. Thomas and Martha lived in Kentucky from 1817-1825 and the rest of the time in Georgetown and then in Prince Georges Co, Md. On the 1830 census they were listed as having two daughters, one born between 1815-1820 and the other born between 1820-1825. Since this is the time they were living in Kentucky, I assume their baptismal records are there. I have no idea which church they attended while in Kentucky, but they were Roman Catholics. -------------------- Thanks for any help which can be afforded.

Query: I am interested in any information that anyone could provide on the exact locations of the mill at the mouth of Hardin's creek (apparently near a road that crossed Grundy's Ford and Stewart's creek) and warehouse (1/4 mile from the mouth) owned by Jacob Doom during the 1790s.

Jacob lived on 625 acres on Short creek between John Nall and Richard Parker; and next to Jacob Yoder; apparently "on the east side of the road leading from John Phillips to Bardstown".

He also had land below Lebanon along Indian Lick creek and Rowling Fork creek- apparently next to Henry Smock and two families named Whitehead and Mayerd.

Among his friends and associates were Robert Peak, Ignatius Cissel, Thomas, John and William Phillips, Coleman Brown, John Lancaster, William Rice, James Watkins, John Helm, George Hamilton, Thomas Brown, Henry Faith, Richard Shelby, John Overlin, Terrence Conner, Thomas Elliot, Isaac Morison and George Summers.

I am interested in any information on Jacob Doom, old maps or local histories detailing the area of that time, or information on any of the individuals mentioned.

By the way, I have a truly "sickening" amount of information on the many branches of the Dooms.

I live in St. Louis and will be returning to the Bardstown area in the near future.

Thanks to anyone for help on this.

Query: In your search for STEWARTs in this part of Kentucky have you come across a Joseph Stewart who married Elizabeth HERRELL in 1837 in Spencer County, KY? Elizabeth was the sister of my 2nd great grandmother, Mary Herrell, who married Tunis HAGERMAN. Spencer County, as you know, was formed from Nelson and Shelby counties in 1824. Elizabeth and Mary Herrell were daughters of Rachel Herrell, who -- since she gave consent for them to marry -- must have been a widow at the time. The HERRELs have been a brick wall for me for some time! Thanks!

Sheila Reid ~ SAReid1@AOL.COM
Query: I am looking for information on the REID family who settled in Nelson Co. in 1782-85 on the "Beech Fork," I think near Gilkey's Run. I have traced my lineage back to Alexander Reid, b. in Nelson Co. in 1804. In his marriage bonds to Lucy Anna Robinson (d.o. John Robinson and Henrietta Reid), Alexander lists his father as David Reid from Pennsylvania and his mother, Nancy, as being from Maryland. I believe Nancy's maiden name was Power or Powers. (Henrietta Reid was also related to David Reid, I think his sister.)

Alexander and Lucy Reid's children were John D., Susan M., Margaret A. George W. and Eliza C.

The above-described land is listed in the Master Index of Virginia Surveys and Grants 1774-1791 and was surveyed in the 1780's. The index lists several different Reids on the land in that area (i.e., Alexander, Andrew, James, John), but not David. I do know that it was my family of Reids that settled on that land. I just have not been able to figure out David, father of Alexander's, connection to the Reid's listed in the Index of surveys & grants, or to find out exactly where they migrated from and if they obtained their land through military service, homestead, etc.

Any help on this, or information on the families of Power(s) and Robinson, would be greatly appreciated.

Query: My ancestor, Hezekiah Murphy, died July 31, 1842 somewhere in Nelson County
Kentucky, while on a trip there. He fought in the Revolutionary War and
his trip might have had something to do with his bounty land warrant, though
by this time his family was in lincoln County, Missouri. Was there any
mention of Hezekiah's death in any newspaper(presuming that any newspapers

Query: I am searching for info. on the parents,  birthplace, and siblings of a
g-g-grandfather named Edwin Jackson.  According to the census, he was born
in Virginia.  I have reason to suspect that he was born in a county that is
now in WV.  His birthdate, taken from his tombstone, was 2 Oct 1802.
Edwin Jackson married Nancy B. Hobbs in 1836 in Nelson Co., KY.  About 10
years later, they moved to Lincoln Co., MO, where Edwin died in 1855.  Edwin
was a farmer and owned 400 acres in Lincoln Co., MO.  The family was well
educated; an interesting list of scolarly books was included in the inventory.
Anyone who might have a lead on Edwin Jackson, I would appreciate hearing
from you.  Thanks.

I am a descendant of Alexander McCown (1755-1835), a leading citizen and the
town's first jailer, of Bardstown, Kentucky -- through his son Joshua
(1804-1896).  I have quite a bit of information on this family, but am
always looking for more.

For example, the "lore" is that his first wife was Annie Coleman.  I have
never seen any proof of this, and would love to obtain information that
would prove or even tend to confirm this.  Alexander's second wife (and
mother of Joshua) was Susan Unseld.  I, too, have lots of information on her
and her family, but know there is more to be found.

I would be interested in sharing this information with any serious
researcher who has common interests.
