CHARLES SAUER, born
January 7, 1842 in Bavaria, Germany and died September
18, 1925 in Louisville
(brother to Joseph, son of
Casper/Caspar) according to Rev.
George Froh, a friend of this family for over 40 years
(George also buried at Valley).
Charles came to America
when he was about four years old. In
LaGrange, he ran a grocery business for many years.
He continued the business of C. Sauer and Son
originally started by his father, Casper/Caspar.
The Sauer Building still stands on Main Street.
The brick for the building was made by his brother,
Joseph Sauer. It is a large, two story building
directly across the street from the courthouse.
While he lived in LaGrange he also was a director of
the Oldham Telephone Company and at one time served as
Master Commissioner of the Oldham Circuit Court.
He married Mrs. Emily
Smart of LaGrange. Four daughters and three sons
survived him. He was known for his courtliness
of manner and his kindliness to all and especially to
those in trouble. He was a member of the
Methodist Church. Charles and Emily Sauer are
buried at Valley of Rest.
