CRAWFORD, Richard. On September 9, 1861, at the age of 24, Richard Crawford, from Scott County, Kentucky, mustered in as a Private with Union forces organizing at Camp Joe Hold, near Louisville, Kentucky, for a 3 year enlistment. He was assigned to Captain Thomas' Company C, under the command of Major General Rousseau's 2nd Kentucky Cavalry, 1st Regiment, Kentucky Mounted Volunteers. Muster rolls for July to October 1861 are marked "not stated." Muster rolls, from March 1861 to August 1862, list Richard as present. The rolls for September to December, 1862, list him as being absent, with the notation "Captured and paroled by Gen'l Morgan, Oct 1862, in Bloomfield, Kentucky." The rolls continue from January to December, 1863, with Richard listed as present. On February 7, 1864, Richard mustered out near Bridgeport, Alabama, with a release date of March 7th. On that same date he "re-enlisted," or mustered in as a veteran volunteer with the Veteran's unit of the 2nd Cavalry. From January to April, 1864, he is listed as being present at all musters. July to August, he is listed as being absent, with the notation "On duty at Marietta" for August 10, 1864. In the winter of 1864, near Savannah, Georgia, Richard was placed under arrest by the Division Provost Guard for suspicion of being a "Bush whacker." Nothing more is mentioned until June of 1865 where he is listed as being present at muster. Between September 9th and 27th, 1865, the 2nd Kentucky mustered out at Camp Joe Hold.
On February 7, 1867, Richard married Sarah "Sallie" Morgan, the daughter of William and Catherine Ivey Morgan, in Owen County, Kentucky. Richard and Sallie settled in Owen County, along Big Twin Creek, in the New Liberty district. Richard made his living as a Blacksmith. He and Sallie raised nine children, 5 boys and 4 girls. Richard and Sallie are buried in the Salem Church cemetery, where Sallie's greatgrandfather preached. His tombstone gives no indication of his birth or death dates. It only reads "Rich Crawford, Pvt. U.S. 2nd KY CAV, Co. C. [14]
