Building the Church

Falmouth, KY July 1872

A record of the transactions of the Ex. & Building Committee of the First Presbyterian Church of Falmouth KY.

An earnest desire having long prevailed in the minds of our church to build a House of Worship and being stimulated thereto by the advice of Rev. H.H. Wells & other preachers in charge - accordingly this desire having culminated in the calling of a Meeting of all the members of sd church at the residence of Mr. E.W. Knight on the 20th day of July 1872 - the Rev. G.W. Coons being then stated supply, Daniel Rush, Robert H. Hitch, James H. Barbour & I.P. Marvin, ruling Elders - he following business was transacted with Rev. G.W. Coons as chairman and I.P. Marvin, Secretary.

After careful and candid discussion of the situation, our weak condition and the deirableness & great importance of our having a House of Worship - it was last determined that we should make an effort to buld.

Then were chosen as Trustees of said church - J.H. Barbour, Judge C.H. Lee and I.P. Marvin.

The Executive & Building Committee members were E.W. Knight, F.T. Hendy & William McMurchy.  E.W. Knight was chosen as Treasurer.

A committee consisting of Barbou, Knight & Hendy was appointed to solicit subscriptions for the purpose of building and the work was at once commenced.

Rev. G.W. Coons was requested to solicit donations from individuals & other churches in our Presbytery & also in Cincinnati Ohio, and immediately entered upon his work.

The encouragement which was met with at once gave promise of future success to the enterprise and the Building Committee at once set about the work of Building.

A lot was procured and the foundation for a church was built.  The corner stone was laid by the Masonic Fraternity, on the 14th day of September 1872 with the usual ceremony and witnessed by a large concourse of people - many strangers of distinction being present.

The lateness of the season & the risk of being unable to complete the House before winter induced the committee to defer further work until Spring.

April 27th 1873 - Judge C.H. Lee, I.P. Marvin & D.E. Redman were chosen for the Executive and Building Committee in place of Knight, Hendy & McMurchy, who removed to other places - and the work of building immediately commenced.  D.E. Redman contracted with the Committee to lay the brick at $6.00 per M, and did the work laying every brick with his own hands.

June 11 1873 - A paper was presented to the Building & Executiv Committee requesting that a record be kept of the names and amount of all subscriptions; for the purpose of keeping accounts correctly, and to preserve a record of those contributing.
"Offered and adopted." The paper was signed by C.H. Lee, I.P. Marvin & D.E. Redman.

Rev. G.W. Coons, our preacher in charge of collected on subscriptions abroad, over $1000.00.  Bro. Coons did not furnish the names of the individual subscribers.  His labors ceased July 1, 1873.

Mr. John E. Thompson furnished the rafter, sheeting &c.  Messrs Morgan and Bery of Cincinnati furnished the flooring & heavy lumber for the frame for the roof.

Mr. James Murphy contracted to put on the roof, and furnishing the material for and ert the belfry for $230 & $25 for laying the floor and fitting the windows.

Charles Mattingly contraced for the plastering at $170.  He, not completing the work, L.C. Marcum was engaged to finish.

Strewbridge & McDonald of Covington furnished the doors & window frames  sash at $140.

Howell & Clendending of Covington did the glazing and furnished the glass at $0.35 per foot.

The 1st Presbyterian Church of Covington furnished seats from their old church to seat our church, valued at $300.

The Board of Church Erection gave us the sum of $800.

November 1, 1873 - took policy of insurance of $1000.  G.W. Jameson was the Agent.  The premium was $20 for 3 years.

John Wicks of Falmouth did the pointing for $50 and $35 for varnishing.

The Ladies with the money of the "Mite Society" purchased matting, carpet, 4 changeliers and 2 bracket lamps.  The carpet cost $70, chandeliers and lamps were $40.

Received of the Board of the "Church Erection Fund" on December 26, 1873, a check for $800.  This is a gift from the board with three conditions:
(1) The building to be insured to the amount of the gift.
(2) A mortgage, to be paid only should the church be dissolved or connect with some other assembly.
(3) We are to make an annual contribution to the Board granting the gift.

James Murphy placed and fitted the seats, built the pulpit platform and baseboards for $38.

Nails were funished by Adams & Kennett of Falmouth.

The church was completed and first used at its Dedication on the 11th day of January 1874.

Rev. Dr. J.M. Worrall of Covington preached the sermon & offered the dedicatory prayer.

Rev. G.W. Coons & H.P. Thompson were present and assisted in the exercises.

A collection of $100 was made to defray some back expenses and debts.  Several hundred dollars of subscription still remain unpaid and we still owe about $300.

Revs. Richard Valentine & C.F. Beach, the former of Lexington & the latter of Pari KY have preached for us since the dedication  Bro. Beach having an appointment for the net Sabbath the 17th inst.

This history thus far completes the facts pertaining to the building of the church.  It now stands completed except a bell for the tower.  Some improvements are much needed in front, such as fencing, a stoe wall & sidewalk - all of which additions are under contemplation.
