Corinth Church - 1871

Located in Clark Co., 12 miles southeast of Winchester, on the waters of Upper Howard's Creek. Records of the first 33 years were lost when the residence of the clerk, Bro. Benj. C. Fox was destroyed by fire in 1904. Bro. Fox was the first clerk of this congregation, and now (1923) the only surviving constituent member.

The first preaching at this place was a series of meetings held Oct 1871 by Elder Smith V. Potts, assisted by Elder E.H. Brookshire. There were added 10 by experience and baptism, with 5 others.

In Dec. 1871 a council was called and they entered into an organization by selecting Bro. John N. Conkwright moderator and Bro. Frank S. Allen clerk of the meeting. The charge was delivered by Elder N.B. Johnson; prayer by Elder Smith V. Potts, Bros. J.H. Lawrence and Allen N. Bush were chosen and ordained deacons. Benjamin C. Fox was elected clerk and Jesse Powell and James A. Fox trustees, who purchased in interest in a two story building owned by the Masonic Lodge, which building is still owned by the church and Masonic Lodge, the church using the lower room and the Lodge the upper room.

Edler Smith V. Potts served as pastor for 6 years and was succeeded by Elder Shelby Todd, who served 2 years.

In June 1880 Elder Ambrose D. Rash accepted the call and served 3 years, when Elder Smith V. Potts again accepted the pastorate and remained 1 year.

In July 1885 Elder John I. Wills became their under-shepherd, remaining about 5 years when Elder J.A. Lee accepted a call sometime in 1891, serving for 1 year.

In 1892 Elder Z.W. Pigg became pastor until 1896, when Elder Richard French began with them and was their pastor 2 years.

Elder E.L. Atwood accepted a call in 1900, remaining about 1 year.

Elder Pleasant J. Conkwright became under-shepherd in 1902, leaving in 1903 when Elder R.L. Brandenburg accepted the call in 1904 and in Jan 1905 we find him pastor and Benjamin C. Fox clerk.

In Jan 1905 the chruch had 178 members. The church appointed the deacons to see a brother for committing the sin of having a dance at his home in Dec. 1905. Elder R.L. Brandenburg resigned as pastor.

In Jan. 1906 Elder Z.W. Pigg was again chosen pastor; served one year Elder J.F. Johnson became pastor in Jan 1907, also serving about 1 year.

In May 1907 Bro. Bluford Fox offered his resignation as deacon; accepted.

In June 1908 Elder C.D. Stevens called but declined to accept.

In April 1909 the deacons and clerk ordered to revise the church roll.

In Dec. 1908 Elder James T. Turpin accepted a call as under-shepherd and served 6 years.

In Nov. 1909 the church passed resolutions of sympathy for their pastor upon the loss of his daughter, Miss Gladys Turpin, who was a member of Corinth Church.

In June 1911 Elder Petree invited to assist pastor in a series of meetings. The old church covenant was destroyed when Bro. Benj. C. Fox lost his dwelling by fire on Sept. 30, 1914.

Elder W.S. Taylor accepted pastorate in July 1914; served until Dec. 1917.

Elder Nelson Crull was pastor in Aug. 1918 to July 1920.

In July 1919 the church adopted the budget system; voted to raise $300.

In Oct. 1920 Bros. J.D. Reeves and Bluford T. Fox resigned as deacons.

In Nov. 1920 Bros. Wm. Crow and W.M. Henderson were ordained as deacons.

In Dec. 1920 Elder S.A. Taylor accepted the pastorate - to March 1923.

In April 1922 Bro. Price Watts was ordained as deacon.

In addition to Bro. Benj. C. Fox, other clerks were: Jonas R. Bush, Hiram Reeves, B.C. Kimbell, Wilbert Berryman, and the present clerk, Mrs. Carrie Rupard, since Oct 1921.

Corinth Church was received into Boone's Creek Assn. in 1872 and entertained the annual sessions in 1879, 1889, 1899, 1908 and 1920.

Those prominentin early history of the church were the Fox, Bush and Tuttle families.

In 1923 membership was 140.
