At Union City in Madison Co., constituted April 30, 1812 with 18 members.
In 1829-1830 when Alexander Campbell and his followers, especially Elder Raccoon John Smith, made such a fight in Boone's Creek Assn., and sank 5 of thirteen battleships (churches) of the Baptists in the sea of baptismal regeneration, which were lost to the Bapitsts forever. Only 15 members of Union City Church were saved from the Wreck, Samuel Denny being the only constituent member left. Today Union City Church is a strong and influencial church in Boone's Creek Association.
The officiating ministers of Union Meeting House, on waters of Otter Creek, were Andrew Tribble, Christopher Harris, David Chenault, John Greenhalgh, Joseph Gentry, Robert Frier and Jesse Winburn. The following members were constituted a church: Calby B. Quisenberry, lucy B. Quisenberry, Samuel Denny, John Winn, Henry Wills, John Millar, Thomas Millar, Jonathan West, Jimmy Miller, Patience Miller, Polly West, Charlotte West, Phoebe Friar, patsy Parish, Sally Burton, Mary Simmons, Martha Dozier and Jennie (a black woman).
The early church was very strict in discipline.... They did not approve of their members attending horse races. For more than 8 years the church did not fail to meet regularly and organize for business.
In May 1812 Elder Robert Frier was chosen pastor and served until his death in Dec. 1819. At the same time Calby B. Quisenberry was chosen clerk and served 18 years.
In June 1812 the church voted to request membership in Tate's Creek Assn.
At July meeting 1812 brothers Colby B. Quisenberry and Samuel Denny were chosen deacons.
In Oct 1812 a sister was excluded for disorderly conduct.
In Aug 1813 the church received from Bro. John Winn a deed for 1 1/2 acres land on which the meeting house now stands.
In April
1814 the church voted that the Friday before the next meeting be a day of fasting and that on that night they attend to the washing of feet at some convenient house.
In June 1814 a committee was appointed to call on a certain brother and request him to report to the church for playing a fiddle ....
In Feb. 1820 Elder David Chenault acctpted a call as pastor and served 1 year.
In May 1820 Elder Thomas Jarman became pastor and remained until March 1828 when he resigned.
In June 1822 the church voted disapproval of attending the races.
In June 1823 it was voted that the day after communion be a day of fasting and prayer and also that they should attend to the washing of feet.
In Jan. 1827 the church called for the ordination to this ministry of one of her members, Brother James E. Duvall. Elders Samuel Kelly, Thomas jarman, Josiah Collins and Peter Tribble composed the presbytery at the ordination.
Bro. Duvall became pastor in Oct 1828, served only 2 months.
in Feb. 1829 a call was extended to Bro. Frederick Shoats. He accepted although not ordained April 1829, the presbyterry consisting of Elders jonah Collins, Thomas Jarman and Bro. Bronston. Bro. Shoats remained until May 1830 when he was granted a letter of dismissal.
About this time the doctrine preached by Alexander Campbell was becoming widely accepted and he had many followers even in the Baptist churches, the members of which were very restless and many were divided.
In Oct. 1830 there was a division in this church, a majority of the members going to the sect known as Reformers, leaving but 15 who held to the original faith, namely, Damuel Denny, Thos. Shearer Sr., Salley Shearer, John Rayburn, Nancy Rayburn, Thos. Shearer jr., Armon Denny, Richard Crews, Ester Crews, Isaac Haines, Sally Haines, Alexander lanter, Sally Lanter, Polly Reeves and Milly Webb.
At the Dec. meeting 1830 there were received into the church 16 more memers and Elder Thomas Ballou was chosen pastor and served until June 1832.
No pastors shown by records, from June 1832 to Aug. 1841. In Jan 1834 the church agreed to unite with the Reformers in building a new house.
In Nov 1836 Pleasant T. Gentry was appointed clerk.
In Nov. 1838 a motion was made for the church to decide if it would disband.
In Dec 1830 they resolved to stand and continue to meet for worship.
In Sep 1840 Cabell Chenault was elected clerk.
In Aug 1841 Elder Peter Tribble accepted care of the church.
In Sept. 1846 Elder Joseph Ambrose accepted the pastorate; resigned 1855.
In March 1847 John R. Wright was appointed clerk.
In 1847 the church voted to request admission into South Fork Assn.
In 1848 the church agreed with the Reformed brethren to erect a brick building on the ground occupied by the old log church, the Baptist to worship the 1st Sunday and the Reformers the 2nd Sunday each month.
Nov 3, 1893 the Baptists purchased the interest of the Reformers.
In Oct 1855 Elder S.V. Potts accepted care of the church; served until Dec. 1858.
In July 1856 Jackson Eades was elected clerk.
In Dec. 1858 Elder T.I. Wills called as pastor but did not accept.
In Sept 1858 the church called for the ordination to the ministry of Bro. N.B. Norris. The presbytery consisted of Elders T.I. Wills, John Ward, G.W. Broaddus and S.V. Potts.
The church was received into Boone's Creek Assn. in Sept. 1857 having previously been a member of Tate's Creek and South Fork Assns.
In Jan. 1859 Elder Nathan Edmonson became pastor; resigned Jan 1863.
July 1863 Elder J.J. Edwards accepted a call until Dec. 1869.
In Dec. 1869 Elder W.E. Chambliss became pastor for short time.
In Feb. 1871 Elder J.J. Edwards again became pastor for 1 year.
In 1864 Wm. Lanter was clerk; he resigned in June 1869.
1869 R.F. Scudder appointed clerk; served until Feb. 1889.
In June 1872 Elder John C. Wray called as pastor; served 6 years.
In Feb. 1873 a committee appointed to solicit funds for missionary work in Boone's Creek Assn.
In July 1876 the church voted to petition Boone's Creek ASssn. for readmission, she having requested a letter of dismissal in 1875.
In Oct 1878 Elder John G. Pond began as pastor; served 8 years.
In Oct 1882 the church voted that when a member leaves this church and affiliates with another denomination the clerk shall write appoints his name "gone off in disorder."
In Jan 1887 Elder J.I. Wills accepted pastorate; remained 10 years.
In Feb 1889 R.F. Scudder resigned as clerk and Albert Parks was elected and served about 2 years, when John L. Eades was chosen clerk in May 1891.
In Dec 1887 church voted to place an organ in the church.
In Oct 1891 the church decided to organize a Sunday School and Bro. R.F. Scudder was chosen Supt. (first record of a Sunday School).
In March 1895 the church voted to receive members from other denominations upon their precious baptism by immersion if they claimed to have been conferted before said baptism and ordered the doctirnes of the church. But a few years later in Sept 1902 the church adopted a resolution "that from this time on we will not receive members by alien immersion".
In Feb 1897 Rev. Richard French accept the care of the church until Oct 1898.
In Nov 1897 Rev. T.C. Ecton became their under-shepherd and led them 4 years. After Bro. Ecton resigned, not pastor for a year when Rev. Wm. McMillan accepted and served 1 year. He was succeeded by Rev. R.L. Brandenburg who began in May 1904 the pastor was assisted by Rev. Robert Baker in a series of meeting with 19 additions by experience and baptism and 2 by letter.
On 5th Sunday in Oct 1905 the chruch entertained the Sunday School convention of Boone's Creek Association.
In Nov 1906 Rev. J.A. Davis accepted call as pastor; served 2 years. He was succeeded by Elder David J. Hunt who served 4 months.
In July 1906 Elder David J. Hunt was assisted by Rev. S.J. Cannon in a series of meetings when 14 were added to the church.
Rev. J.N. Vandiver supplied for the church a few months and then accepted a call as pastor in Feb. 1910 but remained only 5 months. Pulpit was supplied by Rev. W.S. Taylor until Nov 1910, when he was called as pastor and continued until May 1913.
April 30, 1912 was announced a centenial celebration of the constitution of the church. Dr. J.W. Parter preached the centennial sermon. A committee of John L. Eades, the clerk, R.F. Scudder and j.M. Meek previously appointed to prepare a history of the church . The history was read and ordered to be entered upon the church records.
During Sept 1912 a series of meetings were held by the pastor, assisted by Elder W.D. Moore: 13 additions
Rev. E.W. Summers accepted the pastorate in Aug 1913, held until Jan 1916. In Sept. 1915 during his pastorate, assisted by Rev. C.W.Elsey, a series of meetings with 11 additions.
In April 1916 Rev. James Lucas became pastor; served 6 months. During his short stay a series of meetings assisted by Elder Charles L. Brookshire, resulted in 21 additions.
In Nov 1916 Rev. Charles S. Ellis became their pastor for about 2 years.
In Jan. 1917 the church agreed to adopt the budget system.
In May 1919 Rev. F.A. Boone accepted a call; remained about 1 year.
From the constitution of Boone's Creek Assn. in 1822 (or 1823?) until 1915, it had been her custom to hold 3 days meeting annually but in 1916 the annual meetings were changed to 2 days session.
In Dec. 1919 John L. Eades resigned as clerk, and Ralph Parks was chosen clerk and is still clerk (1923).
In Nov 1920 Rev. A.T. Ross accepted the call to become under-shepherd and is still their leader. He was assisted in a series of meetings by Dr. C.M. Thompson in July 1921 when 12 were added to the church.
In April 1922 the church entertained the Sunday School Convention of Boone's Creek Assn.
Union City Church entertained 7 annual sessions of Boone's Clerk Assn. in 1858, 1867, 1877, 1897, 1907, 1919.
