David J. Beck,
80, of Williamstown, passed away Saturday,
January 18, 2003 at the St. Elizabeth
Medical Center Hospice Unit in Covington.
He was born on August 30, 1922 in Campbell
County, son of the late Henry C. A. and Anna
Binkley Beck. He graduated from Alexandria
High School in 1942. He married Jessie Ruth
Beck on February f15, 1947 and his dear wife
survives his passing. He was a member of the
St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.
For many years he was employed by his father
working on their 79 acre farm, plowing,
planting, cultivating and harvesting crops
as well as caring for poultry, hogs, cows
and horses. On May 13, 1944, he joined the
United States Army and served during World
War II. He served in the European Theater of
Operations for nine months with the 85th
Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division as
a member of an 81 millimeter mortar crew,
performing the duties of ammunition bearer.
His responsibilities included advancing
under artillery and small arms fire carrying
mortar ammunition, helping to set up the
tactical position, discharging the weapon,
and maintaining the equipment. He was
awarded the American Theater Ribbon, EAME
Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the
Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal,
World War II.
He retired as a maintenance mechanic with
St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas, after 14
years of service.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, Jessie
Ruth Beck, he leaves his daughter, Sharon
Ruth (David) Staton of Independence and his
son, Christopher David Beck of Williamstown.
He was preceded in death by his brother,
Arnold Beck.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m.
Saturday, January 25 at Woodhead Funeral
Home, Falmouth. Family and friends are
invited to gather from 10-11 a.m. at the
funeral home. Military rites will be
conducted by the Hardin-Browning Post #109,
Falmouth.
Memorials are suggested to the
Hardin-Browning Post #109, Montjoy Street,
Falmouth, KY 41040.
Deborah Jean
Best, 52, of Covington, passed away
Friday, January 17, 2003 at St. Elizabeth
North in Covington, after a long illness.
She was born on November 25, 1950, daughter
of Mary Haden Kiehl and the late Robert
Kiehl. She was the wife of Michael J. Best
and was a member of the St. Augustine Church
in Covington and a member of the St.
Elizabeth Cancer support group. She was a
retired employee of John J. and Thomas
Schiff Agency in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Surviving in addition to her husband,
Michael, is her mother, Mary Kiehl of Delhi,
Ohio; children, Kathy Gerth of Peebles,
Ohio, Steven Best of Covington and Greg Best
of Bellevue; two brothers, Thomas Kiehl of
Cincinnati, Ohio, Ken Kiehl of Harrison,
Ohio; two granddaughters, Amanda and Dakota
Best; and her mother-in-law and
father-in-law, Marcella and Howard Best of
Covington.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon
Tuesday, January 21 at the St. Augustine
Church in Covington. Serving as pallbearers
will be Steven Best, Greg Best, Tom Gerth,
David Kiehl, Rob Marshall and Jason Workman.
Interment will be in the Mother of God
Cemetery in Covington. Memorial
contributions are suggested to the American
Cancer Society.
Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, is serving
the family.
Diane
Barnes Flarity, 64, of Greenville,
formerly of Campbell County, passed away
Thursday, December 26, 2002 at Greenville
Memorial Medical Center.
She was the wife of Robert Allen Flarity.
She was born in Greenville, a daughter of
the late George and Louise Taylor Barnes.
Mrs. Flarity was a former employee of the
School District of Greenville County. She
was a member of Buncombe Road Baptist Church
and the Gleaners Sunday School Class of the
church.
In addition to her husband of 41 years, she
is survived by daughters, Tina and John
Sorrells, of Spartanburg, and Angela Flarity
of Greenville; grandchildren, Joshua Allen
Sorrells, Lauren Deanne Sorrells and John
Dayton Sorrells, all at home; brothers,
David and Jeanne Barnes of Roaring Springs,
Pa., Wayman and Thelma Barnes of Travelers
Rest, Ronnie and Joyce Barnes of Marietta,
Dennis and Linda Barnes of Travelers Rest,
Greg and Krystal Barnes of Greer, Steve
Barnes of Pelzer and Keith and Jeanie Barnes
of Greenville; a sister, Sandra and Butch
Kennedy, of Orlando, Florida and many nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were Sunday, December 29,
2002 at Buncombe Road Baptist Church, with
interment at Grand View Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation, 37 Villa Road, Suite
109, Greenville, SC 29615; or, to Buncombe
Road Baptist Church, 111 Courtney Circle,
Greenville, SC 29617.
Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, served the
family locally.
Esther
Craig Pickford, 81, passed away
December 25, 2002.
She lived in Fresno, California with her
son, John and wife, Cathy, who have taken
care of her for the last 10 years.
She served in the United States Navy in
World War II for four years. She was born in
Falmouth, Ky.
Her parents were Roy and Ethel Craig of
Falmouth. She had three brothers, Leroy,
Lucion and Ballard and a sister, Erma, all
who preceded her in death.
She has two nephews, Roger Craig of Butler
and Steve Craig of Alexandria. Also, an Aunt
Esther Craig Moreland of Butler; and lots of
cousins from Pendleton County.
She was cremated and interment was in
Fresno, California.
Obituary was submitted by her cousin, Esther
Reynold.
Fred C. Moore
Jr., 70, of Falmouth, passed away
Sunday, January 19, 2003 at his home after a
long illness.
He was born on September 8, 1932, son of the
late Fred Cain and Eleanor Miley Moore Sr.
He married Dena Flowers Moore and his dear
wife survives his passing. Fred was a
retired parts manager for the former Fisher
Auto in Falmouth. He was a veteran, serving
in the United States Navy.
In addition to his wife, Dena Flowers Moore,
he leaves a son, James W. (Linda) Moore of
Falmouth; daughters, Deloris Moore of
Falmouth and Tracey (Rodney) Miller of
California; six grandchildren, Jennifer
Kelley, Brook Anderson, Brandy Oaks, Kyle
Moore, Eric Redden and Casey Redden and two
great-grandchildren, McKenzie Wood and
Madison Kelly.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday,
January 21 at Woodhead Funeral Home,
Falmouth. Funeral services will be at 11
a.m. Wednesday, January 22 at the funeral
home, with Rev. Daryl Mullins officiating.
Music will be shared by Daryl Mullins.
Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Tuemler,
Kyle Moore, Bob Flowers, Roy Turner, Mike
Tanner and James Anderson. Honorary
pallbearers will be Eric and Casey Redden,
Brook Anderson, Brandy Oaks, Jennifer
Kelley, Bill Flowers, Dick Flowers, Carl
Wilkerson, Donnie Lovelace, Howard Hoess and
Leon Galloway. Interment will full military
honors by the Hardin-Browning Post #109 will
follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Pendleton
County.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the
D.A.V.
Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, is serving

Suella Elizabeth Beckett Sandy, 86,
of Lexington, passed away Thursday, January
16, 2003 at the Samaritan Hospital,
Lexington.
She was born September 2, 1916 in Harrison
County, to the late Robert Henry and Sara
Florence Whalen Beckett. She was a retired
Parachute Assembler for Irvin Industries and
a member of the Epworth Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by her daughter, Diane Sandy May
and two brothers, Harold Cletus Beckett and
William Grove Beckett.
Survivors include a son, Donald Rankin
(Shirley) Sandy of Lexington; a brother,
Lawrence Oren Beckett Sr. of Falmouth; three
granddaughters, Sharon Diane (Tony) Elliott
of Lancaster, Susan Marie Toadvine of
Lexington and Leeann May of Paris; ten
great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild
also survives. A host of nieces, nephews and
friends are left to mourn her passing.
Funeral services were Monday, January 20 at
the Drake Funeral Home Chapel, Cynthiana
with Rev. Gary Nelson officiating. Interment
was in the Sunrise Cemetery. Serving as
pallbearers were Paul Beckett, Charles
Beckett, Bobby Beckett, Johnny Beckett and
Oren Beckett Jr.
Arrangements were under the direction of the
Drake-Whaley McCarty Funeral Home,
Cynthiana.
