Betty J. Helvey,
61, of Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away
Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at the Rapid City
Regional Hospital in Rapid City, South
Dakota.
She was the daughter of William and Agnes
Barnes Lay. Mrs. Helvey was a sales clerk
for Wal-Mart.
She is survived by her daughter, Billie
Garrett of Rapid City, SD; two
granddaughters; several nieces and nephews
and numerous cousins.
Funeral services for Mrs. Helvey were held
Saturday, January 25 at Woodhead Funeral
Home in Berry, with Bro. Larry Jones
officiating.
Interment was in the Barnes Family Cemetery,
Harrison County, with the assistance of Ed
Million.
Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, served the
family.
Elsie May (Mofford) Perkins, 93, of
Brooksville, passed away Thursday, January
23, 2003 at Harrison Memorial Hospital
Health Care Facility in Cynthiana.
She was born on October 10, 1909 in Bracken
County, daughter of the late Virgil B. and
Fannie Browning Mofford. She was a homemaker
and a member of the Johnsville United
Methodist Church and the Bracken County
Senior Citizens. Her husband, Charlie L.
Perkins, preceded her in death on August 18,
1988. Also preceding her in death were
children, Charles Perkins, Gerald Perkins
and Naomi King.
Survivors include a daughter, Kay Graves of
Brooksville; 14 grandchildren and several
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Sunday, January 26 at
Moore & Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville.
Interment was in Johnsville Cemetery,
Foster.
Memorials are suggested to the Johnsville
United Methodist Church.
Hallie
Johnson Coleman, 78, of Falmouth,
passed away Saturday, January 25, 2003 at
the Edgemont Manor Nursing Home in
Cynthiana.
She was born on April 7, 1924 in Bracken
County, daughter of the late Thomas and
Grace Cummins Johnson. She married Clinton
B. Coleman on October 25, 1947 and her dear
husband preceded her in death on February
26, 1972. She was a homemaker and an 18 year
employee of Wyatt’s SuperValu in Falmouth.
She was a long time member of the Oakland
Christian Church, but attended Turner Ridge
Baptist Church in later years.
She leaves two children, Rita (Joseph)
Hargett of Falmouth and Ron (Claudia)
Coleman of Williamstown; four grandchildren,
Elaine Gosney of Falmouth, Julie (Matthew)
Kirsch of Butler, Clinton (Jen) Coleman of
Walton and Christopher (Jenny) Coleman of
Walton; and one sister, Hazel Fields of
Florence.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday,
January 28 at Woodhead Funeral Home,
Falmouth Rev. Fred Workman and Rev. Chuck
Beighle will officiate. Music will be shared
by Matthew and Sheila Sorrell and Darryl
Ammerman. Pallbearers for the service will
be Clinton Coleman, Christopher Coleman,
Matthew Kirsch, Chuck Beighle, Shelby
McDowell and Lonnie Gregg.
Interment will be in the Neave Cemetery in
Bracken County.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the
Turner Ridge Baptist Church, Building Fund,
or the Edgemont Manor Nursing Home in
Cynthiana.
Ida Baker,
89, of Butler, passed away Friday, January
24, 2003 at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft.
Thomas.
She was a homemaker and a member of the New
Macedonia Old Regular Baptist Church,
Newport. Her husband, Melvin Baker, and a
daughter, Julie Ellen Baker, both preceded
her in death.
She is survived by sons, Monroe Baker of
Butler and Carl Baker of Ft. Thomas; and
sisters, Ollie Bowling and Deltha Turner,
both of Butler, Martha Herald of Wilder,
Georgia Deaton of Franklin, Ohio and Nancy
Combs of Newport.
Services were Monday, January 27 at Cooper
Funeral Home, Grants Lick.
Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery,
Grants Lick.
Mary Storms
Baker, 89, of Berry, passed away on
Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at the Robertson
County Health Care Center in Mt. Olivet, Ky.
She was born on July 28, 1913 in Scates,
Ky., daughter of the late Robert and Nancy
Ellen Clark Storms. She married Alex Baker
and her dear husband preceded her in death
on June 10, 1961. She was a homemaker and a
member of the Robinson Christian Church,
Harrison County. Also preceding her in death
was a daughter, Clara Marie Baker, a son,
Hascol Baker, one sister and five brothers.
She leaves her children, Christine Philpot
of Berry, Wilma Sissom of Alexandria, Joanna
Heiert of Mentor, Ima Jean Mullins of Ft.
Thomas, James E. Baker of Ft. Thomas, and
Larry L. Baker of Alexandria; 15
grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and
one great-great-grandchild. She was the last
of her family.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 25
at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry, with Bro.
Bobb Wickline officiating. Serving as
pallbearers were Robbie Toome, Mike Mullins,
Todd Baker, Aaron Heiert, Alan Baker, Rob
Sissom, Brian Heiert, Chris Philpot and
Kenny Philpot. Music was shared by the
family and Adarin Williams.
Interment was in the Pine Hill Cemetery in
Corbin, Ky.
Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, served the
family.
Norma Fardo
Stein, 66, of Louisville, formerly
of Pendleton County, passed away Friday,
January 24, 2003 at Norton Hospital,
Louisville.
Norma was born in Pendleton County on April
27, 1939, daughter of the late Hollis and
Velma Moore Fardo. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include brothers and
sisters-in-law, Steve and Helen Fardo of
Richmond and Carroll and Beulah Fardo of
Fairfield, Ohio.
Visitation will start at noon Saturday,
February 1 with funeral services at 2 p.m.
at Peoples Funeral Home in Falmouth.
Interment will be in Peach Grove Cemetery in
Pendleton County, under the direction of
Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Raymond Moore,
60, of Newport, passed away Wednesday,
January 22, 2003 at St. Luke Hospital East,
Ft. Thomas.
He was a painter for Moore and Sons
Remodeling.
Survivors include a brother, Mathice Moore
of Newport; a sister, Margaret Jones of
Dayton; half-brother, Roger Moore of Mt.
Carmel, Ohio; half-sister, Thelma McQuire of
Mt. Carmel, Ohio.
Services were Saturday, January 25 at Cooper
Funeral home.
Interment was in Mt. Gilead Cemetery.
Ronald E. Bonar,
74, of Newport, passed away Saturday,
January 25, 2003 at St. Luke Hospital East,
Ft. Thomas.
Ronald was born in Pendleton County on May
24, 1928, son of the late Robert and Lelia
Thomas Earls Bonar. He was retired from the
United States Army and New Maid Margarine.
He was a member of Plum Creek Christian
Church. He married Madeleine Bonar on March
1, 1955, who preceded him in death on
September 25, 2002. A twin brother, Donald,
also preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Jim Bonar of
Independence; a daughter, Lilly Warman of
Grassy Creek; a brother, Alvin Bonar of
Butler; sisters, Pat LaFollette of Butler,
Alta Marksberry of Pendleton County and Ruth
Ray of Newtonsville, Ky. and four
grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday, January 27 at
Peoples Funeral Home in Falmouth.
Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery,
Pendleton County, under the direction of
Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Memorial contributions are suggested to
Hospice of Hope of Northern Kentucky.
Bonnie
Jean Clifford, 71, of Falmouth,
passed away Thursday, January 30, 2003
at the Harrison Memorial Hospital in
Cynthiana.
She was the daughter of the late Charles
and Stella Barnes Clifford. Ms. Clifford
was a retired laborer for Dr. Scholl’s
Shoe Company and a private duty
caregiver. She was a member of the
Oakland Christian Church and later moved
her membership to Trinity Southern
Baptist Church in Falmouth.
Ms. Clifford was preceded in death by a
brother, Charles Clifford; two half
brothers, Chester Clifford and Henry
Bruce and one half sister, Lenola Smith.
She is survived by two sisters, Margie
Rainey of Cynthiana and Rose Mary
(Harry) Ramsey of Falmouth. She is also
survived by one brother, Leroy (June)
Clifford of Mt. Olivet and several
nieces and nephews. Funeral services
were Sunday, February 2 at Woodhead
Funeral Home in Falmouth with Bro.
Eudell Hall officiating. Special music
was performed by Oakland Christian
Church with Barbara Browning at the
organ. Pallbearers for the service were
Tommy Clifford, Darryl Rainey, Allen
Ramsey, Curtis Ramsey, Joel Clifford,
Keith Ramsey and Charles William
Clifford.
Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in
Pendleton County.
Memorials are suggested to the Robertson
County Health Center in Mt. Olivet.
Carol Ann
Larison, 65, of Demossville,
passed away Monday, January 27, 2003 at
her home.
She was a retired manager with the
Internal Revenue Service.
Survivors include a son, Mike Larison of
Demossville; her mother, Fay Anna Mabel
Larison of Demossville; brothers,
Cleaton Larison and Harvey Larison, both
of Demossville; sisters, Linda Larison
of West Chester, Ohio, and Valerie
Marcum of Crittenden; and two
grandchildren.
Services were Thursday, January 30 at
Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home,
Independence.
Interment was in Wilmington Cemetery.

Emogene
(King) Percell, 81, of Augusta,
passed away January 27, 2003 at
Meadowview Regional Medical Center in
Maysville.
She was born on March 12, 1921, daughter
of the late Thomas and Mae (Fields)
King. She married Thomas Percell on
February 10, 1945, who preceded her in
death in April of 1981. Also preceding
her in death was a son, George (John)
Percell and a brother, Eugene King. She
was a housewife.
Survivors include children, Nellie
Linville of Maysville, Margie Saunders,
Opal Reed and Linda Percell, all of
Augusta, Lois Sweet of Dover; 21
grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren;
seven great-great-grandchildren; a
sister, Ella Mae Curtis of Germantown,
Ky.; and a special friend, Mildred
Youngman.
Funeral services were Thursday, January
30 at Moore & Parker Funeral Home,
Augusta.
Interment was in Mt. Zion Cemetery,
Augusta.
Memorials are suggested to the charity
of one’s choice.
Loretta Bray,
78, of Alexandria, formerly of Butler,
passed away February 2, 2003 at Baptist
Convalescent Center, Newport.
Loretta was born in Kenton County on
February 10, 1924, daughter of the late
John and Mary (Smith) Houber. She was a
founding member of the Association of
the Pendleton County Mentally Retarded
and founding member of the Pendleton
County Sportsman Club. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Ed Bray, on May
23, 1988.
Survivors include her daughters, Barbara
Mellon of Cincinnati, Ohio, Karen
Heringer of Cold Spring and Debbie Hart
of Falmouth; a stepdaughter, Linda
Farrell of California; sons, Terry Bray
of Lexington; a stepson, Eddie Bray of
Fairfield, Ohio; and eight
grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m.
Tuesday, February 4 at Peoples Funeral
Home in Butler. Funeral services will be
at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 5 at the
funeral home.
Interment will be in the Alexandria
Cemetery under the direction of Peoples
Funeral Home, Butler.

Mattie Gay
Rice, 72, of Southgate, passed
away Friday, January 31, 2003 at her
home.
Mattie was born in Demossville on
September 10, 1930, daughter of Frank
and Rose (Barger) Rice. She was a
custodian at Newport Schools. She
married Bernis “Chick” Rice who preceded
her in death on February 23, 1984.
Survivors include a friend, Garland
Nelson of Cold Spring; sons, Bernis Paul
Rice of Concord, North Carolina and
Jerry Rice of Newport; daughters,
Barbara Martin of Southgate, Connie
Gorman of Ft. Thomas and Pamela
Underwood of Newport; a brother, Carl
Estep of California; 14 grandchildren
and 12 great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service was held
with musical selections being, “For the
Good Times.”
Interment was in the Butler Cemetery
under the direction of Peoples Funeral
Home, Butler.

81, of Williamstown, passed away Monday,
February 10, 2003 at her home.

Mary Foley
Shinkle, 91, of Felicity, Ohio,
passed away on Wednesday, February 5,
2003 at home.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, James Russell Shinkle; a son,
William R. (Sharon) Shinkle; a brother,
Wilson Foley and a sister, Goldie
Hartweg.
She leaves two grandchildren, Jackie
(Rick) Abrams and William Billy
(Jennifer) Shinkle II; two
great-grandchildren, Bradley and Leanne
Shinkle; and brothers, Earl and John
Foley.
Funeral services were held at the
Felicity Church of Christ in Ohio on
Saturday, February 8.
Interment was in the Chilo Hill
Cemetery, Ohio.
Arrangements were handled by the Charles
H. McIntyre Funeral Home, Felicity,
Ohio.
Nancy
Mary Bennett, 94, of Lakeland,
Florida, formerly of Florence, passed
away Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at
Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
She was a former saleswoman at Bennett’s
Department Store in Williamstown and a
member of Crest View Baptist Church in
Lakeland. Her husband, Ottie Clay
Bennett, preceded her in death in 1988.
Survivors include a stepson, Ronald
Bennett of Lakeland; and stepdaughters,
Helen Crabbe of Lake City, Florida and
Doris Pierce of West End, N.C.
Services were Monday, February 10 at
Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Interment was in Hill Crest Cemetery,
Dry Ridge.
