Anna Mae Vaughn,
90, widow of the late Bart Vaughn, passed
away suddenly on March 5, 2003 at her home
on Crooked Creek Road in Berry.
She was born at the same house on April 26,
1912 and continued to live there alone and
conduct her farming operation until her
death. She was a devoted mother and
grandmother; active member of the
Colemansville Christian Church and Civic
Affairs. A farmer’s wife by choice, she was
an inspiration to all of her family and
friends. She was cherished and will be sadly
missed.
Preceding her in death were two sons,
Delbert and Ronald Vaughn and a grandson,
John Thomas Moore.
She is survived by six children, Beulah
(Buddy) Moore of Paris, Betty (Melvin)
Blakeman of Louisville, Estille (Gloria)
Vaughn, Russell (Wanda) Vaughn and Gayle
(Judy) Vaughn, all of Cynthiana, and Jo Ann
Schmitt of Paris. She was the dear
grandmother of 20 and great-grandmother of
21. She is also survived by a host of
nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were Sunday, March 9 at
Woodhead Funeral Home in Berry, under the
direction of Bro. Mike Hays and Bro. Bradley
Vaughn. Special music was shared by Carol
Cole and organist was Anna Cason.
Pallbearers for the service were
grandchildren, Barbara Lynn Argo, Lana
Kaelin, Debra Williams, Destry Moore, Amy Jo
McCall, Christal May, Bradley Vaughn,
Michelle Chasteen and Melissa Gaunce.
Honorary pallbearers were Ken Rippenger,
Edwin Fogle, Odes Milner, P. G. Whitaker,
Tommy Mink, Ina J. Huffman, Barbara H.
Vaughn and Michael McCall.
Interment was in the Pythian Grove Cemetery,
Berry. Her granddaughters were her flower
bearers.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the
Colemansville Christian Church or to
Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital in
Lexington.
Annetta
Kaye Dennie Denton, 46, of
Cynthiana, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2003
at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
She was born on September 3, 1956 in
Harrison County, daughter of the late
William and Violet Fern Jones Dennie Jr.
Formerly, she had worked as a lab technician
with USIOL in Lexington. Recently, she had
worked as a certified nursing assistant with
the Grand Haven Nursing Home in Cynthiana.
She was a member of the Oakwood Baptist
Church, Cynthiana.
She leaves her daughter, Angela Kaye Lea of
Cynthiana and her son, William Keith Lea of
Paris; two grandchildren, Shelby Renae
Stanfield and Weston Keith Lea; sisters,
Carolyn Pitt of Nicholasville, Diana Fogle
of Cynthiana and Patricia Harding of Paris;
brothers, Danny Wayne Dennis Sr. of
Cynthiana, Darryl Lee Dennie of Cynthiana
and Gerald Lee Dennie of Paris.
Funeral services were Thursday, March 6 at
Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, with Bro.
Mike Hays officiating. Pallbearers were
Danny Dennie Jr., William Matthew Dennie,
Travis Dennie, Jason Dennis, Jr. Power,
Dwight Fogle, Devon Dickey and Darryl Dennie
Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Dewey Watson,
Gary Barrette and Wayne Richie.
Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery,
Falmouth.
Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of
the Bluegrass.
Lucille Alice
Emard, 72, of Indianapolis, formerly
of Pendleton Co. passed away suddenly at her
home on Tuesday, February 26, 2003
inIndianapolis.Lucille was born in
Indianapolis, Indiana on April 9, 1930,
daughter of the late Curt J. and Mary Alice
Mayhew Willem. She was a beloved mother,
daughter and sister. She was a member of the
Warren Park Weslyn Church. She was married
to Col. Alfred Emard, who preceded her in
death in1997. She was formerly married to
the late Robert L. Clark of Butler.Lucille
had such a giving spirit. She visited her
mother in a nursing home every day. She was
always looking for ways to help others in
need, usually transporting friends to the
store and doctor. As a young adult, she
volunteered working with the special
education students at Northerngreatly missed
by her family and friends.Survivors include
her mother, Mary A. Willem of Indianapolis,
daughters, Cheryl (Phil) Lande of
Indianapolis, Nila (Daryle) Harris of
Butler, and Julie(Chris) Gifford of Virginia
Beach, five grandchildren--Jeremy, Daniel,
and Marty Lande, Devin and Mark Harris. She
is also survived by a brother,Robert (Helen)
Willem of Indianapolis.Funeral services were
Saturday, March 1, 2003 at Shirley Brothers
Fishers-Castleton Chapel. Officiating were
ministers, Ray Austin and RayEckert. Let
There Be Peace on Earth was sung beautifully
by Bobby Sampson.Following the wishes of the
deceased, Lucille was cremated. There will
be a memorial ceremony in June 2003, when
her ashes will be spread in a garden in
Crown Hill cemetary in Indianapolis.Memorial
contributions, if desired, are suggested to

Joseph
Britton Durham, 84, of Falmouth,
passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at St.
Elizabeth Hospital South.
Joseph was born in Rockcastle County on July
9, 1918, son of Macleon Durham and Mable
Payne Durham. He was a member of Trinity
Southern Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge
222.
Preceding him in death was a brother,
Macleon Durham and a half brother, William
Capp.
Survivors include his wife, Millie Durham of
Falmouth; a son, Bobby Joe Durham of
Florence; sisters, Irene Reams of Orlando,
Ky. and Hester Spaulding of Butler; two
grandchildren, Britt Durham and Mollie
Durham; and two great-grandchildren,
Mitchell Anderson and Zachary Anderson.
Funeral services were Monday, March 10 at
Trinity Southern Baptist Church, officated
by Bro. Dale Bobb.
Interment was in Riverside Cemetery under
the direction of Peoples Funeral Home,
Falmouth.
Memorial contributions, if desired, are
suggested to Trinity Southern Baptist
Church.
John Ercel
Fryer, M.D., son of the late Ercel
Ray and Katherine Zempter Fryer of Falmouth
and Winchester, nephew of the recently
deceased Joe Zempter, passed away suddenly
February 21, 2003 in Philadelphia. He was
65.
Dr. Fryer retired in 2000 as professor of
psychiatry at Temple University. He was a
graduate of Transylvania College, Lexington
and Vanderbilt Medical School, Nashville. He
served Episcopal churches as organist and
choirmaster in all the cities where he
lived. He contributed to the funeral service
for Mr. Zempter last March and also attended
his 100th birthday party the previous year.
His funeral was held in the Episcopal Church
of the Good Shepherd, led by the Rt. Rev.
Edward Lee and the Rev. Thomas McClellan of
Philadelphia.
His obituary appeared in the October 5 New
York Times. It described his singular effort
to remove discrimination against gay people
in the American Psychiatric Association.
He is survived by his sister, Kathy Helmbock,
Cincinnati and five first cousins, including
Billy Browning and Ruth Ann Ackman, both of
Falmouth.

Corbin Andrew Karl Powell and Garrett Corbin
Douglas Powell, infant sons of Jason
and Tamara Powell of Dry Ridge, were called
to Heaven on March 3 and 4, 2003 at
University Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Survivors (along with their parents) include
grandparents, David and Sally Powell of
Berry and Thomas and Jantine Stoops of San
Diego, California; great-grandparents,
Robert and Barbara Brown of Williamstown,
Stella Benauro of Nashville, Tennessee, Tony
and Johannes Westerkamp and Dorothy Stoops
of San Diego, California.
Graveside services were held at Pythian
Grove Cemetery on Saturday, March 8 by Bro.
Dave Powell.
Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry, served the
family.
