A pioneer in public health for five counties in Northern Kentucky has died at the age of 80.
Dr. Virginia Daugherty Kratz of Southgate, Kentucky died at 11:25 a.m. January 17, 2004 at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas, Kentucky.
Virginia Daugherty Kratz, M.D. was a public health pioneer. As a third generation physician who’s husband, son, brother, and cousins were also doctors. Mrs. Kratz devoted her life to healing others.
Her grandfather, J. F. Daugherty, was one of the first physicians to graduate from the University of Louisville Medical School.
A 1947 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Dr. Kratz was a pioneer in public health in the state of Kentucky, where she and Dr. Mildred Gabbard were the first two women health officers in the commonwealth. With the help of her nurses, Mrs. Mildred Dickison of Pendleton County, Edna Risen and Mildred Shipp, both of Grant County, Dr. Kratz provided immunizations, nutrition counseling, health inspections and general medical care to the people of Owen, Gallatin, Grant, Pendleton and Boone Counties.
Having graduated as valedictorian of the Simon Kenton High School class of 1941, she continued her academic excellence by being on the Dean’s list every year of her undergraduate studies at the University of Cincinnati. During the 1960s Dr. Kratz took time out to raise her family and then did a residency at Rollmans Psychiatric Hospital in Cincinnati where she practiced for the next seven years.
Dr. Kratz and Mrs. Dickison became very good friends during their medical career. A deep friendship that lasted all these years. Mrs. Dickison, a R.N. worked with Dr. Kratz about 10-12 years. “She was very quick mentally and physically and could turn out more work in an hour than most people could do in several hours,” Mrs. Dickison said.
“She was a very intelligent woman. With the help of the Falmouth Woman’s Club she started the Pendleton County Health Department.
“She would tackle anything that needed to be done and see to it that it was done,” chuckled Mrs. Dickison. “She wasn’t afraid to buck any one if she thought something was not right.”
Mrs. Dickison added Dr. Kratz was a pioneer out in the county clinics they sit up at that time with one at the Baptist Church at Gardnersville, one at the old DeMoss Masonic Lodge, and one at Carntown. “Back then we did all the school physicals for the grade schools,” Mrs. Dickison added. “She made a lot of home visits too.”
“We were very good friends, and Virginia was a very, very good person. She had a wonderful sense of humor and I learned a lot from her.
The two long time friends kept in touch over the years and a few years ago visited with each other for awhile.
