Donna Deaton, 63,
Butler
Donna Sue Yelton
Deaton, 63, of Butler, Ky., passed away on
Saturday, April 17, 2004 at her residence.
She was a retired Demostration Hostess for
Sam’s Club in Florence, Ky., a member of
Butler Baptist Church, Pendleton County
Historical and Genealogical Society,
Breathitt County Historical and Genealogical
Society, Newport H.S. Alumni Association and
a Ky Colonel. She was preceded in death by
her parents, James and Nancy (Dunn) Yelton,
grandparents, Jack and Cora (Fornash)
Yelton, George and Neva (Loomis) Yelton, and
brother, Danny Joe Yelton.

(Bill) Mullins, Ludlow, Ky., Karen Deaton
(Jeff) Shoe-maker, Butler, Ky., brother
James Yelton (Lana), Butler, Ky., two
grandaughters, Donna C. Mullins, Ludlow, Ky.
Nancy Shoemaker, Butler, Ky., several
nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was an avid geneaologist for over 30
years. David Wecker, Cincinnati Post
columnist, referred to her in an article as
a “super slueth”. She was helping her
Newport High School Class of ‘58 classmates
find people for a reunion, she was able to
find all the graduates except one, although
she did locate him a couple of years later.
In 2003, Donna, through her accumulated
researching skills, helped reunite a man
with his birth mother. She attended dinner
they held to get aquainted with each other.
She was called upon by the Newport School
Board to help find World War II veterans who
had left school to serve in combat and did
not receive their high school diplomas when
they returned home from the war. The Board
wanted to present them with honorary
diplomas. Countless people contacted Donna
over the years to enlist her skills with
helping them to research their family
history, with reasons as varied as
connecting with their past to solving family
mysteries. She even went and researched
documents in the National Archives in
Washin-gton DC to help her daughter research
a paper on a great-grandfather that had
served in the Civil War. Other than postage,
she never charged for anything she did
because her payment was the satisfaction in
helping someone to get a glimpse of their
connection to the past. Donna loved to pour
over record books in the back room of county
courthouses and libraries, or trudge through
cemeteries looking at the names on
headstones. And even with the advent of the
Internet and computerized records, she felt
nothing could replace good “old fashion”
research.
