Former Gov. Nunn, 79, Versailles
Former Gov. Louie Broady Nunn, 79, of
Versailles, Ky., passed away on Thursday
January 29, 2004 at his home of an apparent
heart attack. He was born at Park in Barren
County on March 8, 1924, he married the
former Beula Cornelius Aspley of Glasgow in
October 1950. They had two children; a
daughter, Jenni Lou, in July 1951 and a son,
Stephen in November 1952. Steve was elected
to the Kentucky House, representing Barren
County, in 1990. Louie and Beula Nunn were
divorced in 1994, she passed away in 1995. A
symbol of his party as the state’s last
Republican governor for 32 years and the
governor credited with starting Northern
Kentucky University. Nunn, elected in 1967,
was Kentucky’s last Republican governor
before Ernie Fletcher was elected in
November, he rode in the back of a
convertible during Fletcher’s inaugural
parade in December. Nunn thrived on
political combat and was never far from the
front. He sought statewide office four times
and figured prominently in several other
campaigns. His record was a mixture of heady
victories and galling defeats.
Arrangements were not available late
Thursday.
