Generation No. 1

 1.  John Wesley Barnett  (James Barnett6 Jr., James5 Barnett,Sr., James WIlliam4, James3, John2, William1) was born 1829 in Big Ridge, Scott CO., Va, and died 1888 in Muskogee,  Indian Territory.  He married Elizabeth Ann Johnston April 16, 1852 in Scott Co., VA., daughter of George Johnson and Sarah Barnett.  She was born 1826 in VA, and died Bef. 1870 in Orlando, Rockcastle Co., KY  bur: Barnett Cem..

Notes for John William Barnett:
Between 1857 & 1859, John Barnett moved his family to Mt. Vernon, Rockcastle Co., KY.  Did they go by way of  Grainger Co., TN, Over the Cumberland Gap?  Near where John was born and raised is to this day a sign pointing to the "Cumberland Gap" route.

""16th April, 1852
In conformity with the licence presented to me, I celebrated the
rites of Matrimony between John Barnett and Elizabeth Johnston according
to the form and custom of the Baptist Church.
John was a Farmer (1870 census) and preacher. He plowed 200 acre farm with a cow and ox.

"My Uncle John Barnett (son of my great uncle John Barnett) was, I learned, much afraid of
snakes. My father used to laugh about it and the fun he ( my dad) had out
of that, even after Uncle John Barnett, had moved to OK. In one instance,
Dad was plowing, killed a huge blacksnake ( non-poisonous, of course) and
laid it across a path along which he expected John to come. The latter
did come, stepped close to the snake before he saw it, letting out a
yell. When he came down he grabbed a handful of stones and peppered the
snake until he finally discovered it was already dead.  When Uncle John
went over to where Dad ( trying hard not appear not to notice what had
happened, Uncle John said, " You think you're __________ smart, don't
you!" That incident probably happened in KY.

When Uncle John and Aunt Celia left with their family for OK., our family
moved to the farm where they had lived, on the head of Brushy Creek (
tributary of Beaver Creek) in Taney Co., just over the "Divide" a few
miles to the south of where Wilbert and family live on Caney Creek. And
when Dad would happen to see a bob-tailed fence lizard he'd say, "
There's one of Barnett's lizards." and laugh. He meant to imply that
Uncle John stoned ever lizard, that he had knocked off the lizard's
tail."   per Claude  Johnson.

Notes for Elizabeth Ann Johnston:
I have a picture of Elizabeth Johnston Barnett, very beautiful lady. How
did she copy with the hardships living in the country?

Sarha Jane [Barnett] Malicoat was married to a very hot tempered, woman
chasing man. Records show proof Fanteroy was married to three women at
the same time, no divorce ever found. Fanteroy lived a very hard life.
Dorothy [Beddo] Welch said to me Oct.,1995, while we were visiting our
ancestors graves," I sure would like to dig up our grandpa and beat the
devil out of him for what he did to our grandma".  Dorothy is the
daughter of Dollie [Malicoat] Beddo.

Fanteroy is buried next to Sarah Jane at Clabber Flats cem, near Pauls
Valley, OK.

Fanteroy had to put up a $100.00 bond to marry Sarah Jane. I have copies
of all legal papers.

Fanteroy M. and his sister, Phoebe married brother and sisters, Eli
Wallace and Sarah Jane Barnett.  A great-grand daughter, Zina [Barnett]
Harris is still living in Moore, OK., age 89. I met with her in June,1995
and she gave me a copy of her father's bible, naming more family. Eli
Wallace and Phoebe [Malicoat Barnett are her grandparents, and are buried
in Elmoore City, OK. a few miles from Pauls Valley.

Fanteroy and Sarah Jane had a son, Mat, his descendants don't lay claim to
any Malicoat unless the name is spelt MALICOAT. But through years of
research I found the spelling changed within the siblings and all are
related.

Notes for Sarah Jane Barnett:
Notes:
Sarah Jane sure had a hard life being married to Fanteroy. He would take
off and marry another woman, never bothering with divorce. Maybe he
chased around because he was younger than Sarah Jane, or was he just a
great lover? Sarah Jane was with child,(Frank, died very young) when
Fanteroy took off and married  wife # 2 woman.

Sarah held a great love for Kentucky, she instill her love for the Blue
Grass state in her children. Oh how she hated to leave  Kentucky . She
had 2 small children and another one on the way ( Sarah Elizabeth) ,as
she made her way across the country to join her husband in Texas.  Fant
had shot a man for slapping Sarah Jane, the sheriff gave him the choice
of leaving the county,  never to return or going to jail. Fant left his
wife and children in the care of his father-in-law, sister and
brother-in-law, ( Eli Wallace & Phoebe (Malicoat) Barnett. The man was a
known trouble maker.

Oct., 1995, Sara L. (Davis) Allen and I were driving through the hills of
Kentucky, talking about our Granny ( Sarah Elizabeth (Malicoat) Davis),
about the love Sarah Jane had for Kentucky,  remembering Granny saying
she always wanted to see the Blue Grass of Kentucky, when I looked up to
heaven and said," Granny look through my eyes and see the beauty of the
Blue Grass of Kentucky".

From all the years of research I have done, I feel I have the right to
state how I see Fanteroy M. Malicoat, my great grandfather.

Sarah Jane "Barnett" Malicoat instilled into her children her love of
Kentucky. The beautiful country side, flowers on the hill sides during
spring, blue grass during summer, leaves turning during the fall and
light snow during the winter. Sara Lou "Davis" Allen (grand daughter of
Joseph Sanford and Sarah "Malicoat" Davis) said "granny always wanted to
see Kentucy, she had remembered all the stories her mother had told her
growing up". Sarah Elizabeth never lived to see Kentucky, she went blind.

More About Sarah Jane Barnett:
Fact 1: Sarah Jane and Eli Wallace Barnett are siblings

Notes for Fanteroy M. Malicoat:
Notes:
Chickasaw Nation Census 1900 lists Sarah Jane Malicoat as Head of House
with 6 children. (one being my grandmother, Sarah E.) Name is under
spelling Malicot and family number 205-182, copied from Pauls Valley
library, Pauls Valley, OK.

1910 census lists Frank Malicoat as head of house, age 55, no wife.

Fantory was a playboy, he was still married to Sarah Jane [she was
carring Frank in her womb] when Fanteroy ran off and started living with
a "Old Lady Blue". When this lady became pregnant and Fanteroy ran from
her, she took the life of her unborn child and her own. After her death,
Fanteroy returned the Garvin County area and took another wife, Elizabeth
George and started yet another family. Records show proof on the same
11-13-1900,  Fanteroy took yet another wife, Millie Beard in Maxwell,
Indian Territory.  No divorce has ever been found for Fanteroy.

Three of Fanteroy and Sarah Jane [Barnett] Malicoat's daughters married
the three sons of James Robert Finley and Millie[Blackwell] Davis in
Indian Territory.

Kentucky to Indian Territory
Early 1884, somewhere in Rockcastle or Madison Co., KY, a man ( name unknown) walked up
and slapped Sarah Jane "Barnett" Malicoat on the face, wife of Fanteroy
M. Malicoat. Fanteroy pulled his gun and shot the man dead. Sheriff
arrived, not wanting to place Fanteroy under arrest, but had to do his
duty,(the man was a known trouble maker), told Fanteroy if he would leave
the county by nightfall, never to return, he would release him. Fanteroy
agreed and started out of the county, leaving behind his wife and two
childre,(Sarah was pregnant with their thrid child, Sarah Elizabeth
Malicoat( my grandmother). Eli Wallace and his wife, Phoebe "Malicoat"
Barnett took charge of the family.

Fanteroy finally arrived in Indian Territory, sending for
his wife and children. Eli and Phoebe "Malicoat" Barnett loaded up Sara
Jane and the children in a covered wagon and headed for Texas, leaving
behind their loved ones. It was a long and hard trip during the summer,
finally arriving their destination, arriving Indian Territory, just in time
for Sarah Jane to give birth to their child, Sarah Elizabeth Malicoat.
The family stayed ther long enough for another birth, John Malicoat,
March 1887. Their stay  was short lived, Fanteroy was in trouble
once more, got drunk, shot up the town and sowing his wild oats. This
time between 1888-1889, Fanteroy took his family to Purdy, Indian
Terrotiry, where he became a rancher and additions were born.

This is where my grandparents met. Sarah Elizabeth Malicoat and Joseph
Sanford Davis.

Chickasaw Nation Census 1900 lists Sarah Jane Malicoat as Head of House

Officiation Rev.'s Joe Tidwell and Jack Barker

                                   "I'm Now in Heaven"

I"m now in heaven, the gates have opened wide. And now I have the
privilege, of walking by HIS side. The angel choir is singing, and the
music is so sweet. I'll join them soon as I, worship at HIS feet.

I'm now in heaven, and the blood washed throng is here. I recognize a lot
of them, there's not a singgle tear.  There's joy beyond description, and
reunion by the score.  There'll be no separation, for we'll be here ever
more.

I'm now in heaven, please wipe away your tears! I've fought the battle,
ran the race, I'm rid of all my fears. There is no pain or sorrow, the
heart aches are past. I've read and sung of heaven, and now I'm here at
last.

I'm now in heaven, and oh the place is grand! No one could ever tell me,
the beauties of the land. Since I can not describe it, you'll have to
come and see. That is was worth the trials, to live here eternally.

Thi was read at Fanny "Granny's" ueral.[Jean's Davis.FTW]

great beyond without learning what life is for; but that the deceased had
faith."  A faith that was more than a dogma.  Rev. Baker stated that

obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mouning shall flee away."

Story Told By: Mr. Joe Davis, born March 21,1881, ALABAMA

"I came to the Indian Territory with my father and mother in 1892.  I was
11 years old, we came through on the Santa Fe train from Texas to  Pauls
Valley, Indaian Territory.  On arriving at Pauls Valley, my father bought
2 horses and a wagon, we loaded up our household things, that my father
has shipped through.  It was not much, we had 4 chairs, table, homemade
bedstead and a few other household things.

My father moved to Purdy, a little place about 25 miles southwest of
Pauls Valley.  There was a store, lone schoolhouse, Blacksmith shop and a
Grist
Mill.  This mill was ran by steam and owned by Mr. Park (Hart).  The
Blacksmith Shop was owned by Jim Welch.  I do not remember who owned the
store.

I went to school at this Log School house.  A white woman was my teacher,
I do not remember her name. My father had to pay her one dollar a month
for me.  Us kids that went to school did not have desks, we used slates
and set on the hued down logs for seats.  I had a blue back speller and a
reader. I think there was about 25 or 30 children went to this school,
the year I went.  I did not go much the second term, only on the days we
could not work in the fields.  I had to help my father on the farm.

My father had about 100 acres leased, he raised lots of corn and cotton.
He would haul the cotton to Pauls Valley on the Washita river.  I believe
this mill and gin went out of business.

There was lots of deer around Purdy, when we moved there,  I have seen as
high as 15 deer in one drove, around the foot of the Table Mountains,
south of Purdy.  Wild turkey's I have shelled corn and feather, about one
mile from our house was a big turkey roast, they would come around our
corn crib early of a morning.  We could have turkey anytime to eat we
wanted to.  I have gone hunting and would not even shoot at a turkey.  I
like rabbits better, there was lots of coon, posessum and shunks around
Purdy.

I have broke wild horses for my father when I was 14 years old.  Sunday,
that was our "fun day".  After Sunday school a group of boys that lived
around Purdy, would meet at my house, nearly all owned saddle horses.  We
would go out on the prairie, there was not very many fences then.  We
would rope calves and have our rodio, riding these calves on Sunday was
when I learned to ride.  When I was at the age of 15, I was not afraid to
try any wild broncs or did I not care how big the steers were.  We boys
would make up $5.00 purses for the best rider for that day.  I have won
several times.

My father raised some cattle and hogs, but his main crop was corn.  Corn
was cheap then, I have seen my father sell corn for fifteen cents a
bushel.  My father sold about 20 acers of corn for ten cents a bushel in
the filed.  I do not know how much corn the man he sold that year
gathered, but we usually made forty to fifty bushels an acer.

I lived with my father and mother around Purdy, until I was married in
1900.  I married Lisa Sarah Malecoat, daughter of F.L. Malecoat, who was
a big cattle man around Purdy, when my father moved there.  My wife was
born in Purdy, I do not know how long her people has been in the Indian
Territory, before my father and mother came there.

After getting married I moved on a farm and went to farming for myself.
In later years I have raised as high as 75 bales of cotton a year.

My wife and I have reared 10 children.  I now live 3 miles west of Pauls
Valley.  I have lived around in what is now Garvin county for 45 year. "

A copy of this interview was sent by Walter Malicoat January 20, 1994.

The third child born of Joe and Sally Daivs died at the age of 3  from a
spider bit.
Sarah Elizabeth (Malicoat) Davis wasn't born at Purdy, Okla., she was
born in Tx.
Her mother was with child when Sarah Jane (Barnett) Malicoat left Ky by
wagon to Tx to join her husband, Fanteroy.  The child Sarah Jane Malicoat
was carring was Sarah Elizabeth Malicoat, ( my grandmother).

Notes for Imogene Annis Davis:
Imogene's childhood stories: [My mother was 78 yrs young when relating
these stories. Mother would start to laugh and just talk up a storm and
me asking questions].]

"My older brother, your Uncle Ed had to take care of us kids alot, Papa
was always gone taking cows to Okla City and moma had to cook and clean
for 12 kids."

Born:
"I asked my mom one day, where did I come from" Mom said a buzzard laid
me in a egg, the sun hatched me and she came along and took me for her
daughter".

Sailing:
"Me and Dorothy were just small, when my some of my older brothers and
sisters put us in momma's old wash tub and sent us sailing down on the
Washita Creek, we didn't know how to swim, but really thought it was
something til my brother, Ed had to swim out and get us."

Blackman:
"Beady always wanted to preach, she would take us kids down to the river
and play church, then she would bapitize us, if we didn't go along with
her, she'd hold our head under water til we gave into her. This one day,
we all set and listen to Beady just a preaching up a storm when a black
man walked up behind Beady, us kids took off running, Beady turned around
and saw that black man and dropped to her knees and prayed, "God let me
get to the hatchet and kill this blackman before he hurts me".  The
hatchet was laying between Beady and the blackman.  We set and laugh
about that to this day"

Praying to the Plate:
"We lived down on the river bottom, Papa was farming the Old Brothers
place, one day Ed told us this man was coming to eat and this man prayed
to his plate and we weren't to laugh or make fun of him. We all got upto
the table and sure enough, this man looked at his plate and started
praying, for the food on his plate, but his plate was empty, the food was
setting in the bowls. Us kids set there waiting for the food to move
through the air to his plate, it never did.  That did it, us kids started
laughing and Ed made us leave the table. That was the first time I ever
saw a man pray to his plate".

Moonshine:
"My cousin, Jr Beddo was a deputy sheriff, and when they were going to
pull a raid on Moon-Shiners, Jr would tell Papa and Ed, then Ed would
hide in a new the place. It all came from Harshall Roberts, he'd go to
Ark pick up a load and bring it to Pauls Valley, Papa and Ed would hide
it for him. Well, moma got real sick and the doctors in Pauls Valley told
Papa that moma was going to died. Harshall Roberts came and talked a long
time to Papa and Harshall took moma to Okla City to his doctors. They all
kept saying moma's going to die and I told them moma wasn't going to die
and she didn't. They all thought cause I was a small kid that I didn't
realize what was going on. Harshall brought moma home and she was much
better, the doctors in Pauls Valley came to see moma and couldn't believe
moma didn't die. One of the doctors was Doc Johnson. Harshall paid for
moma surgery and hospital bill himself, because when Harshall was real
sick, moma took him fresh eggs and milk every day and nursed him til he
was well. Hershall was moma's son in law, Jeromy Robert's brother".

Bus Ride:
"When I was about in the 3rd grade, the school bus took us all to near
Elmoore City to see these "famous men in their coffins", think they were
outlaws. So many people were there, crying and carring on. That was my
first long bus ride."  NOTE:  After I checked records, the two men were
Will Rogers and Robert S. Kerr. When I told mother who the men were she
couldn't believe it, she thought they were some famous outlaws. Mother's
reply was,  "now I can say I saw  Will Rogers".
