PHILLIPS:
The Phillips were supposed
to be part Cherokee Indian. They were dark skinned and dark eyed and some of
their descendants claim to be Indian, but Nancy didn't admit to her Indian
heritage and passed as “Black Dutch.” This term has been defined as indicating
black hair, dark brown or black eyes and a swarthy complexion with thick looking
skin. In those days Indians were called breeds or half-breeds and discriminated
against. Indians were not considered citizens and did not have the right to
vote in all states until 1948.
It is believed, from family
stories, that Nancy's first husband as well as her daughter, Martha, died in Missouri.
Nancy, with her son, Andrew Jefferson, walked back to her family in Rockcastle
County, Kentucky.

Rance Coffey 1885-1984 says
that she, Flora, had a very hard life and received a check from the state, seven
or eight dollars a month. Joe Coffey also remembers his father, Harrison,
saying that she wasn't too bright. The family had a few pigs and some of them
got quite mean and would bite or attack whoever would go to feed them. So,
instead of going themselves, the other kids would send Flurry to feed them. She
would climb right in amongst them, doing what needed to be done and if any of
them came towards her she would just scold them saying, "I'll slap your jaws
direct (directly)." They would move off and leave her alone.

1858-1933 Andrew Jefferson Barnett was born 12-26-1858 in Rockcastle Co., KY,
died 2-21-1933 at Shidler,OK of bronchis pneumonia and is buried in the Covey
Cem, Jenks, OK.
He was living with his dau, Lena Martin at the time of his death. He was the s/o
Nancy Ann Phillips & Andrew Barnett. Andrew first married Mary E. McGuire. Mary
died and he married Joanie A. Shouse, d/o Henry Thomas and Dicy Coffey Shouse.
Andrew and Mary had 5 children: Nancy Jane Barnett, md 1st. Goldman Burdett,
they didn't move to OK. Goldman died. Her 2nd husband was Sam Ballinger; Gillie
Ann Barnett b. 10-1887 and d the fall of 1909. She was m James Columbus Parker
on 8-02-1906 in Tulsa
Co, Indian Territory; William Ivan Barnett, married twice; Polly Delores Barnett
, m 1st. James Columbus Parker Barnett, 2nd Lee Combs. Polly and Jim are buried
at Kiowa, OK. near Polly's dau, Bernice Parker and Gilly Ann's dau, Pearl Mae
Parker Birdwell; Cleo Barnett, m Leroy Bales, they are buried in the Covey Cem.
Andrew andf Joanie had 5 children: Johnny Lee Barnett b 1901, d 1916 bur at
Covey Cem.; Helena Barnett m Alvin Dean Martin, she lives in Cleveland, OK;
Maude Barnett b 5-31-1911, d 6-1912; Burtis Barnett a twin to Maude, m Coleman

twice and died in Ark., City, KS. Joanie's last four children were born in Tulsa
Co., OK. All the older ones were born Rockcastle Co., KY. Joanie's 1st husband
was Columbus Marion Johnson. They had 3 dau's; Florence, Mary Ann and Bessie.
Bessie died young and is bur Covey Cem. Johnson left Kentucky early, taking
Florence and Mary Ann with him. He and his 2nd wife, Lee ann Spencer, settled
near McAlester, OK. Joanie learned of their whereabouts and attempted to see the
girls, but Johnson wouldn't let them talk to her. Research by Bennie Lou Coffey
Loftin before publication of Lizzie's Legacy and Our Coffey Cousins in 1984,
located Mary Ann living in McAlester, OK near her cousin,

but no wife living with him in that census. He was list in the household next
to his father. Ivan's second wife was Zoe Short.
Ivan didn't have any
children.
