65. John R. Kirkland (Mary Chaney , Jacob Chaney , Charles , Richard , Richard , Richard ) was born 1 on Oct 11 1808 in Sequantchie Valley, Marion County, Tennessee. He died 2 on Feb 1 1879 in Vernon County, Missouri.

John R. came from TN to Morgan County, AL, & then with his family to Fayette County AL, before 1830. As a Democrat he represented Fayette County, in the Gen. Assembly of AL. in 1847. John was sheriff of Fayette County AL, about 1845. About 1851 John moved his family to Conway County, AR, and then to Bates County, MO, in 1853. Later he moved into the Territory of KS, possibly to what now is Anderson, KS. John R. and his sons joined the Union Army during the Civil War. In violent defense John wrote, "If I lived in hell, I would fight for the devil himself."
Olevia: Edward Pickens Kirkland wrote that John R. Kirland had three daughters and eight sons by his first wife, and two or three daughters by his second wife. Pick wrote that John moved from Fayette County, AL, to Greenville, MS, to western AR, to eastern KS, and finally to SW MO where he died. John R. was about 75 and blind when he died.

Wm. Wilson Kirkland would weep when he read letters from his sister Lavina describing the dire poverty and hardships her family faced in Burnet County, TX. It was a sharp contrast from their life in Fayette County, AL. In Burnet County, TX Anderson built a home and furnishings for his family including a loom on which Lavina wove a burgandy and beige wool coverlet which remained a family heirloom for at least 124 years.They lived 5 mi. NE of Lake Victor in Burnet County, TX (8 mi. S. of Lampasas, TX.)

Lavina married Anderson Farquhar son of James Farquhar and Mary Aldridge. Anderson was born 1 on Jul 20 1809 in Person County, North Carolina. He died 2 on Feb 13 1892 in Burnet County, Texas. He was buried 3 in Cauble Cemetery, Burnet County, Texas. Anderson served in the military 4 CSA, Rangers Cavalry, 2nd Rgt. 27th Brig..

Anderson Farquhar was a prosperous man in Fayette County, AL, where 200 ac. of his 500 ac. were cultivated. His farm was well stocked with cattle, horses, hogs, and sheep. In 1850 he produced 600 bushels of corn and 800 lbs. of rice In 1852 with his family he steamed down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. From New Orleans they steamed into the Gulf of Mexico to Matagorda Bay. They went up the Colorado River by boat to Fayetteville, Fayette County, TX. They remained here 2 years before forging into the frontier to Burnet County, TX.

67. Jehu Chaney Kirkland "Hugh or J. C." (Mary Chaney , Jacob Chaney , Charles , Richard , Richard , Richard ) was born 1 on Apr 4 1812 in Sequantchie Valley, Marion County, Tennessee. He died 2 on Nov 12 1888 in Fayette County, Alabama. The cause of death was Heart Trouble. He was buried 3 in Siloam Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Winfield, Alabama. Jehu served in the military 4 on May 19 1862 in Co. B. 41st AL Inf. Regiment. He was employed as State Legislator; Farmer.

Hugh was a Democrat. He served in the General Assembly of AL representing Fayette County in 1855-56; 1874-1877; 1880-1881. He enlisted in the Confederate Army--County B, 41st AL Inf. Regt. on 19 May, 1862. By 2 Apr., 1863, he resigned as a major. He resigned because all of his sons who were of age and his sons- in-law were in the Army. Kirkland Post Office was named for him. He moved to Fayette County, AL, from Morgan County, AL about 1830 and settled near Sipsey. He was a Quartermaster of 78th Regt. with rank of Captain of AL State Militia in 1853.

Jehu married 1 Permelia Chappell daughter of Miles Chappell and Priscilla Parker about 1831 in Fayette County, Alabama. Permelia was born 2 on Feb 6 1817 in Tennessee. She died 3 on Oct 26 1903 in Fayette County, Alabama.

Permelia was a woman of strength and fortitude. She bore 16 children, ran the farm and reared her children (single-handed) while her husband was off soldering and legislating. At age 80 (1897) she made the arduous train trip from AL to West TX to visit three sons. Her sons met her at Sweetwater with a wagon equipped with a bed for their mother to rest as they went south to Ft. Chadbourne. Permelia chose instead to ride upfront and two of her sons had to ride on the make shift bed.

  147 M iii James A. Kirkland was born 1 in 1837 in Fayette County, Alabama. He died 2 on May 31 1862 in Battle of Seven Pines, Virginia. He was buried 3 in Virginia. James served in the military 4 on Jun 11 1861 in Co. I. 11th AL Infantry Regiment.

James enlisted 11 June, 1861 in County I, 11th AL Inf. Regt. He was wounded in the Battle of 7 Pines in VA; He was a CSA Captain. The 11th AL Inf. Regt. was attached to Wilcox's Brigade. On May 31, 1862, the Brigade was ordered to move across Williamsburg Road and the 11th AL was ordered to the front by the Division Commander. Three companies of this regt. were ordered to dislodge the enemy holding a certain point. The battle resulted in a loss of 66 wounded or killed in a few minutes.
James died during the Civil War.

  151 M vii Anderson Dallas Kirkland "Dallie or A. D." was born 1 in 1845 in Fayette County, Alabama. He died 2 on May 3 1865 in Farmville, Virginia. He was buried 3 in Hospital Cemetery, Farmville, Virginia. Anderson served in the military 4 41st AL Infantry Regiment Co. I. 11th AL Infantry Regiment.

Anderson was a Flag Bearer with County I, 11th Al Inf. He was also with County B, 41 st AL Infantry Regt. Two days prior to the surrender at Appomattox, A.D. was shot and captured at Farmville, VA. on 5 Apr., 1865. On Apr. 9 he was in the Field (Flying) Hospital, 24 Army Corps, Army of the James (US Army). He was sent to the General Hospital, Farmville, VA on 14 Apr. where he died on May 3. A gunshot wound to his leg required amputation. He died from complications of the amputation & was buried in a mass grave with 600 other Confederate men.

68. Daniel G. Kirkland (Mary Chaney , Jacob Chaney , Charles , Richard , Richard , Richard ) was born 1 on Feb 22 1814 in Sequantchie Valley, Marion County, Tennessee. He died 2 on Jan 24 1897 in Osage, Coryell County, Texas. He was buried 3 in Osage Cemetery, Coryell County, Texas. Daniel was married 4 times. He served in the military Seminole Indian War in 1836 in Soldier, 1st AL Infantry Regiment.

Daniel served under Gen. W. S. Taylor. For this service he received land warrants in 1884, Fayette County, Alabama. Daniel G. was blind for several years. Whe he was 74 or 75, a doctor in Waco, Texas removed cataracts from both eyes and Daniel was able to read a newspaper to the day of his death at age 82. Daniel was at one time a Justice of the Peace. When he mustered into service at Mobile, Alabama, he was 6'2" tall, weighed 180 lbs., had gray eyes and dark hair.

Daniel married 1 (3) Tabitha Octavie Helene Yerby daughter of Amon Yerby and Rachel Dodson on Feb 9 1848 in Fayette County, Alabama. Tabitha was born 2 on Sep 17 1818 in North Carolina. She died 3 on Mar 21 1864 in Fayette County, Alabama.

According to Daniel G. Kirkland's bible record published in Kirkland Source Book of Records, Vol. 2 pg. 446--Tabitha's name was "Tabitha Helene".

Some sources have identified this man as "John Y. Kirkland;" however, more sources identified him as John E. Kirkland--will, marriage record, newspaper articles. On 2/11/1898, The FAYETTE SENTINEL ran a picture of John who was described as "A Goliath in statue and a solid Democrat in politics." He was pictured with a 5 ft. 4.5 in. man whose hat was just above John's elbow. In the FAYETTE COUNTY TIMES of 7/13/1915, John was described as being as "fat as ever and not having to stand twice in the same place to make a shadow."

He died 2 in Mar 1859 in Philadelphia, Neshoba County, Mississippi. He was buried 3 in Old Philadelphia, Along the Pearl River.

Robert conducted Indians from MS to OK; Was sheriff, State Legislator, and was being considered as a suitable candidate for governor when he died from colic after being shot in the foot as a bystander at a difficulty between others. He made 3 trips escorting Indians from MS to OK. He served in the MS State Legislature in 1850, 1856, and 1857. During the Civil War Bob's widow lost her large plantation and general store. Robert was enumerated in Neshoba County, MS, in 1850.

Robert married 1 Amanda Melvina Fizallin Stribling daughter of Thomas Jefferson Stribling and Elizabeth Rogers about 1850 in Neshoba County, Missouri. Amanda was born 2 on Jun 19 1829 in South Carolina. She died 3 on Jan 6 1912 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas. She was buried 4 in Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, McLennan County, Texas.

Her name according to Kirkland Records was: AMANDA DORCAS FITIZILAND STRIBLING. According to a granddaughter Amanda was named for the heroine of "CHILDREN OF THE ABBY"--an early day novel. In MS Amanda lived in a lovely colonial mansion and wore black taffeta dresses. She had many slaves who took care of all tasks and duties. Amanda was kind to the slaves and they "worshipped" her. When she went to TX they begged to be taken along. Amanda was a refined lady who became a hard-working pioneer in TX.

In 1860, Amanda's property valued at $10,000 and personal property valued at $26,160.

Mary married William Owens Moore son of William Moore and Elizabeth Patterson. William was born 1 on May 11 1816 in Tennessee. He died 2 about 1890. He was buried 3 in Paradise, Wise County, Texas. William served in the military on Jun 20 1863 in Co. B. 7th Regiment, AL Cavalry.

Mary Ann and Wm. Owens lived east of Sipsey and about 2 mi. from Fayette until about 1860 when they bought land in the western part of Fayette County, AL. In 1878/79 they moved to Wise County, TX. They reared the 8 orphan children of Carson Hunter Moore, a brother of Wm. who was killed in Sept., 1863, near South Mt., MD, prior to the battle of Antietam.
At the age of 47 Wm. O. Moore enlisted with County B, 7th Regt., AL Cavalry on June 20, 1863, Greene County, AL. He was paroled May 17, 1865, at the office of Provost Marshall, Hd. Quarters 16th Army Corps. County I--same regt. Wm. Owens Moore reared 21 children including 7 orphan children of his brother Carson Moore, his 11 children plus 3(?) others. Two of Carson's children--a niece Hunter Moore and a nephew-William Moore moved with Wm. Owen Moore's wagon train to TX in 1878.

71. William Wellington Kirkland MD (Mary Chaney , Jacob Chaney , Charles , Richard , Richard , Richard ) was born 1 on Jan 2 1820 in Tennessee. He died 2 on Dec 23 1905 in Osage, Coryell County, Texas. The cause of death was Pneumonia. He was buried 3 in Osage Cemetery, Coryell County, Texas.

Wm. Wilson worked in the field during the day and studied at night to become a doctor. He began practicing medicine in Chickasaw County, MS, before moving to Pontotoc County, MS & then he moved his family to Jennis Colony, AR, near the county line of St. Francis and Jackson Counties. In 1861 he was detailed for the militia, but was exempt because of his being a physician. In 1863 he moved to a farm near Waco where he purchased 257 acres. In 1874 he moved his family to Coryell County, TX.

Polly Ann's tombstone has her birth date as 9 Apr., 1824. Family records denote her birth year as 1821, which is more reasonable with marriage date. W. W. & Polly Ann moved from Chickasaw County, to Pontotoc County, MS, before moving to AR. They lived in AL before they moved to Chickasaw County, MS.
