Kentucky: A History of the State. Perrin, Battle & Kniffin, 6th ed.,1887, Spencer Co. DR. S.P. BRYAN was born July 22, 1827, in Taylorsville, Spencer Co., Ky., and when eighteen months old was taken by his parents to Monticello, Wayne County, and in 1846 moved with his father to Oldham County, Ky., where, with the exception of three years he has since resided. His father, Edmond Bryan, was born in Virginia in 1796, moved to Kentucky when a boy, was a graduate of Cincinnati Medical College, and was a physician in high standing in Shelby, Spencer and Wayne Counties. In 1846 he moved to Floydsburg, Oldham County, in 1848 to Louisville, and after several years to Carroll County, and in 1852 located in Grayson County where he died at the age of sixty-seven. He had eight brothers, six of whom became physicians, as did also three of his children. Dr. Edmond Bryan's wife was Lettice Pierce, who was born in Boyle County in 1805, and died at the age of seventy-two in 1877. The Bryans are Irish and the Pierces of French origin. Our subject is the third of fifteen children, and was educated in the schools of Monticello, where he spent his boyhood. In 1845 he began the study of medicine with his father; in 1850 entered the Kentucky School of Medicine, and graduated in the spring of 1852. He then began practice at Floydsburg, but in January, 1854, located at Brownsboro, Ky., where he still resides. In 1856 he went to Dublin, Ireland, and took a course in clinics in the hospitals in that city, returning in May, 1857, to Brownsboro. In 1842 he joined the Christian Church, but in 1848 attached himself to the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He is a Mason with membership in Fortitude Lodge, No. 169. In 1829 [sic] he joined the K. of H. July 21, 1853, he married Miss Addie V. Thomas, daughter of Middleton Thomas, of Oldham County. Mrs. Bryan is the fifth of six children, and is a member of the Baptist Church. To Dr. and Mrs. Bryan seven children have been born: Bettie J., Rosa M., Edmond A.
