CRUME was born in Spencer County, Ky., February 8, 1852, the third of a family of four children born to William F. and Sarah E. (Birkhead) Crume. William F. was born in Spencer County, and always engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a son of Jesse and Mary E. (Willet) Crume. Jesse was born July 6, 1779, in Frederick County, Va., immigrated to Kentucky when he was sixteen years of age with his parents, and settled in Spencer County. He was a carpenter and blacksmith by trade, and was also engaged in farming. Mrs. Sarah E. Crume was born in Spencer County, Ky., a daughter of Eli and Elizabeth (Clark) Birkhead. J.W. Crume was educated at the common schools, and at Lynnland Institute, Hardin County, Ky. He married January 3, 1882, Susan Clark, of Spencer County, daughter of James A. and Frances (Lilly) Clark. Two children has blessed their union: Hugh and Bessie. Mr. Crume engaged in farming up to 1884, at which time he was elected sheriff of Spencer County, and served his term with universal satisfaction. He is now deputy-sheriff under A.J. Massie.
