Kentucky: A History of the State. Perrin, Battle & Kniffin, 6th ed.,1887, Spencer Co. MRS. REBECCA W. HICKMAN was born in Spencer County, Ky., a daughter of Jesse and Mary (Willett) Crume. Jesse was born in Virginia, immigrated to Kentucky in quite an early age, and settled in Spencer County. He was engaged in agricultural pursuits, and was a son of Phillip Crume. Mrs. Mary Crume was born in Maryland, a daughter of Griffith Willett. Our subject was raised in Spencer County, and received a common-school education. In October, 1830, she married John Hickman, of Shelby County, Ky., a son of James Hickman. Ten children were born to them, seven [sic] of whom are now living: Mary, who married John Lee; John, who married a Mrs. St. Clair, and had one child, Katy; Rufus at an early age emigrated to Texas and never married; Minerva, who married John M. Hedges, and had five children: Ida L., William, Mary, Charles, and an infant; Leticia, who married Mr. George Fund, has three children: James, Rebecca and Sally Mary; Sallie, who married Mr. Manning, and had one child, Oscar; Griffith, who married a Miss Brown, and had two children: Willett, (and) Thomas R.; and James, who is still single and the youngest son. Mr. Hickman was a jeweler by trade, and worked in Louisville for a number of years, but his latter days he devoted to agriculture. He was of pleasing manners, and a great favorite with all who knew him. He died in 1862. Mrs. Hickman owns 270 acres of land, and is a member of the Baptist Church.
